Did we really just go for two when down 9?

Typical Iowa offensive stupidity. You don't go for it then. If you fail, game over. You wait for the next TD (not that this offense and coaching staff would get another TD), so that there is motivation to try and get that next TD.
I respect Ferentz so much as a man, but I cannot wait for him to be gone. It is the end of the Fry era all over again. The nepotism doesn't help.

It doesn't matter when there's only 1 possession left

It would have been a long shot, but if Iowa had covered the onside kick and then scored a TD (there was about a minute left) and then converted a 2-point conversion the game would have gone to OT. Granted, the way Iowa was playing it was very unlikely, but you have to at least try.

You just proved my point lol. You needed 2 no matter what. The probability of said 2 point conversion is the same no matter when you attempt it.

No, I didn't prove your point. If you miss the 2-pt conversion there's no point in even trying an onside kick because the game is out of reach. That onside kick would have been meaningful if Iowa had just kicked an XP and been down only 8 instead of 9. Come on, quit trolling me, man. lol

Right so you're saying a 2pt conversion attempt then vs a minute or so later against the same defense who just spent more time on their heels and has more pressure on them to stop it when it's to tie vs make a one possession game is the exact same scenario.

Gotcha.

Logic fail. You wanted to extend the game for the sake of extending the game. In reality, Hawks needed a 2 point conversion no matter what. It doesn't f'ing matter when they attempt the 2.

I honestly can't believe that there are football fans here who don't understand why you don't go for it there. I guess watching Kirk for so long has led to more severe brain damage in Iowa than I ever imagined.

I'm not sure I would have gone for it there, but here is the argument for going for it.

You need 2 at somepoint nomatter what. So you go for it early in this case. Then if you get it you're down 7. If you don't get it, you're down 9 and you still theoretically (although highly unlikely) have time for two onsides kicks.

Contrast that with taking the extra point and being down 8. Then you get the onsides kick and use up all the clock on your next possession, not knowing if you will be able to convert the 2. So you will have no time for a second onsides kick.

Basically, going for 2 sooner tells you what you need to tie the game earlier and allows you adjust accordingly.
