Money ruins a lot, thought he’d stay in the traditional footprint.

Oof. Really was hoping we'd get him. But we'll keep getting out paid by these bigger schools.

Cole Wisniewski ended up at Texas tech after leaving NDSU, the way of the world until these smaller big ten schools up their nil game.

This is not realistically going to happen, because the money just isn't there for the "smaller big ten schools". I wished it wasn't true, but it is. It's an arms race Iowa can't compete in. Say, for example, somehow Iowa goes up to $15 million, OSU, et al will go to $30 million. Unless the whole system changes, Iowa and the like will always be behind. Under the current way, only if the rich programs finally cry uncle and say this is crazy will anything change, but at this point, it seems they haven't reached that threshold. Significant structural changes will need to be made if the idea is to put schools on somewhat of an even footing, like making players employees and imposing some graded salary scale - the legality of which I can't comment on. That begs a host of other issues, but what is going on now is not sustainable for schools like Iowa.

The rich programs are not going to cry uncle. They are in charge and they like it this way. Teams like Iowa will be competing for crumbs. Every once and a while a team like Indiana might sneak in. That way the big schools will say see you have a chance.

Maybe to you but most people would take the million dollars and then take their chance to go pro! Very few get into the NFL.
There are 7 rounds of the NFL draft, if you are getting a million dollars to go somewhere, that means that you are a draft prospect. You should never leave a situation that you are doing well in to go somewhere like Auburn and struggle (i.e. Rocco Becht).

It is more about getting creative or finding methods to rake the money. Look at Nebraska, they have a top ten NIL, they have a population of 1.9 million, compared to Iowa's 3.2 million. Iowa may always be behind the 8 ball, but there is beyond zero reason they aren't taking higher level, younger transfers that have yet to hit the field. If that doesn't work, then throw the money around at recruits. Ohio State does not have a bottomless coffer, and these guys only want to see the field.

For one, Nebraska has the benefit of not sharing fan allegiance with another school. Iowa shares its primary market with Iowa State. That has to make a difference.

Iowa will be in the mix, but they cannot regularly compete for top level talent. And there are far more schools situated like Iowa who will searching for these same younger transfers and recruits. Ohio State may not have bottomless coffer, but it is far deeper than Iowa's, and they, and other schools, will always be at least a step ahead of Iowa on that front.

One thing that Iowa has going for it over many others is a solid program culture. It's considered boring and antiquated by many, but it helps distinguish them for the potpourri of similarly situated schools. And recruits/transfers (and their families) are attracted to it. Like it or hate it, Hayden and Kirk built this and Iowa would be wise to find their next coach who is of the same mentality and attitude. Nebraska may rake in more money, but their culture that was cultivated by Devaney and Osborne is dead, and they are barely living off the memories of the past. That's my take on it.

I believe there was a recent post listing the top 25 NIL “budgets” per school and Nebraska wasn’t listed, but Iowa was. So, not sure where you’re getting that Nebraska has a “top ten NIL”?

Na, that 247 post was wildly incorrect

There doesn’t seem to be a reliable list of schools in terms of NIL fundings.

One story claims Oregon has unlimited funding, which seems to be more plausible than the list that says they aren’t in the top 10.

Common sense, along with quotes from papa Nike, say they have unlimited funds.

Oregon, OSU, Michigan, and USC are spending huge $$$$$, like 2 mil per good kid. Iowa, Purdue, N'west doesn't have 2 mil to spend on 30 kids. Shocked Minnesota, Nebby and Whisky are this active on buying players. Guess they are serious about their programs.

How do you know Iowa doesn’t have 2mill? Sources inside the program tell that?

When you are raised on the Iowa-Nebraska border, you end up hating the Huskers, not the Cyclones.
If you've been to both Ames and Lincoln, I can without a doubt bet you hate Debbie more. ISU fans are annoying when they come to Kinnick, but they aren't even in the same league as the mullet sporting, sister banging, toothless fans that Debbie sports.

I hate them both but not near as bad as Michigan fans.

Really what I was getting at is growing up in Western Iowa, you're likely to be around either Iowa fans or Nebraska fans - Iowa State is hardly in the picture comparatively. Of course that changes the more East you travel, but, that's why I don't hate ISU. If my wife wasn't an Alum, I would never think about the Cyclones.
