Quick PG doesn't mean a good PG: Trey Dickerson couldn't crack our rotation in 2014.

BUT, this new guy DJ Carton from Bettendorf we're looking at for 2019 could fit the bill of quick skilled PG. He's a long (for his position- 6'2") lefty, with the quicks and moves to get into and finish in the lane. I found a long (9 minute) highlight reel on him that looks good. He looks to pass first but appears to have the outside shot as well. I'd be surprised if we don't formally offer soon. He'd look good in black and gold next to Patrick McCaffery in the 2019 class.

Carton makes this statement in the NCSA Sports link below.
"My name is DJ Carton. I will graduate in 2019 from Bettendorf High School In Iowa. As a sophomore, I will be the starting point guard on varsity for the 2016-17 season. I recently changed to this position and have been successful after a lot of hard work and extra training. I am not afraid of hard work, but more importantly I am a good teammate, respectful to others, and a coachable athlete that is always eager to learn new things. I understand the importance of a good education and make my studies a priority while still finding time to improve my game and hone my skills. My childhood dream is to one day play collegiate basketball in a highly competitive program and I am willing to do what it takes to play the game I love."

Got to like the attitude. Lots of nice stats on him in that link as well. The highlight reel is in that link too but here it is directly from YouTube:

He's a lefty...so automatically love him. Strong game from these highlights at a very young age.

I thought that the 2019 PG scholarship was reserved for Tyger Campbell ;) ...... or is it a forgone conclusion that Campbell will sign with Michigan State?

I haven't seen where Campbell has been offered. He's predicted to go to MSU. Maybe that's why.

Very impressive tape for his age. Needs to work on his right hand a little, and develop some shots in the lane to play high D1 BB. Smooth ball handler with decent size. Always hard to tell how good of a shooter someone is from tapes, but release isn't too slow or low.

Would this be Nicholas Baer's School?
yes

This site lists Campbell with an Iowa offer.
VerbalCommits doesn't list an offer from Iowa for Tyger. 247 lists an offer but predicts with 5 votes 100% for MSU. I'd like to have Tyger but indications are he's a long shot. Meanwhile, we've got Carton in our backyard and he looks pretty good.

It was fun watching this kid. He's really good at dishing it, especially finding the cutter or the open man. The bounce pass is a thing of beauty, especially if the receiver scores. Very Tom Davis-esque. Great bounce passes. He can drive, dish, and shoot the 3. Don't let the Clowns get him.

from what i understand 3 schools have seen him in person..Neb,Wisc&Iowa...no ISU. Was at the game vs Wieskamp..Speraw was there...taking notes.
I really like his ability to penetrate but that was against high schoolers'''...has a big upside..will be interesting to see how he does this summer and how he handles his junior year in hs...Bett loses a number of seniors.

Maybe we got a shot, eh? :)

Maybe it is only a soph game, and he is a freshman, but this kid is very, very good. I like him. Could grow another inch or two also.

maybe we do ... don't think it is a case of someone's life long dream to be a Hawkeye though..so not a slam dunk. Doesn't matter...Fran & staff will be in on several guys (as usual).

and lets remember ..until someone gets an offer..its all speculation.

Carton appears to be the real deal. Hopefully Fran can continue locking down the states best players.

Great 3 year run with Joe, Pat, and DJ out of Iowa. Foster may make it 4 if he continues to improve.
