Dolph

Aside from him being a good ambassador for the program. I just decided not to listen to him for live sporting events and mute the TV when those announcers are annoying.

He’s got a good radio voice at least but I agree it’s time they make an improvement here. Too slow on getting critical details that he does get correct.

The past few years since I can listen to Dolph live calling the game while watching on tv I would say he has a few constant faults. He is constantly calling out the yardage for the next down by guessing not waiting for an official spot and the scoreboard to reflect the official yardage. And then he constantly says "well it looked like he gained two more yards than that spot" or something like that.

Now a few times a game is no big deal but it happens a lot and it is annoying and I think confusing for the people only listenting to the game.

All he has to do is just wait a second or two to see where the official puts his foot down.

He makes a lot of errors on players names and I am sure he has a paid spotter in the booth or nearby so that is usually corrected fairly quickly.

He does do a good job of setting the pre-snap scene formation wise and motion wise and what the defenders are doing.

And he still gets excited for the hawks and called out to offensive problems this last year
You all on here do realize that there is that delay between the two-TV and radio..?

Well in my 21st century world I can pause the game on YouTube TV and I can also pause the radio call of the game on iHeart radio or from the UI athletic dept feed.

It is very easy to synch them and you can buy synching software.

And I like to have Dolph call the snap about 1 second or a bit more than the tv so I can hear what is coming.

I can't say I understand the Doph sentiment. Maybe he needs to learn more modern jingo and appropriateness, but he does fine. I listen to other U broadcasts and not nearly as interesting.

Dolph probably rides out with Kirk unless he says something really dumb on air. He owns a bar in Dubuque. Looks pretty nice. Will get there someday.

Jim Zabel, Frosty Mitchell, and Ron Gonder were far better
Frosty Mitchell...oh man, haven't heard that name in awhile. He was a walking cliche'. As for Bob Brooks, he definitely deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Gonder, Mitchell and Zabel. He was a sports journalist in every sense of the word.

That said, Zabel has a unique place. He was editor of the DI when Kinnick's plane went down. I don't think you could find anyone connected to Iowa athletics that was there for more great games, moments, and memories. The guy led a charmed life...and was a Hawkeye through and through.

Down, distance, score and time. Good announcers give that info a lot on radio broadcasts. Dolph a little lacking in that dept. Otherwise I think he is a very nice man and a great hawkeye.
