Dom Uhl

so you don't believe Fran? Curious did you watch the game on BTNPlus and did the streaming work for you? I may have missed a few things but the Uhl I watched in Carver in limited minutes was indeed in tune with his teammates when it came to ball movement. If you want to see someone not setting up their teammates....all you had to do was watch Bridges last night for MSU....but hey he probably will be B1G Freshman of Year.

I agree Uhl did not come to Iowa as a "natural".
I did struggle through Sundays game while having to refresh BTN+ more than 20 times. I'm not saying I don't believe Fran but as a coach there is no way in hell you're going to come out in the media and just rip on one of your players or go through all the negatives. I think that general answer is an easy way to get around the fact that there hasn't been many positives for Uhl and there is a reason he is consistently in the "doghouse". The doghouse is reserved for players that consistently don't make the right basketball play which seems to happen to Uhl more than most.

If the team is looking for a glue guy, Wagner is the ultimate glue guy with more skills if needed. He's selfless, can defend the post, can clean up the defensive glass, and just lets the game come to him.

Jmo, but I do not see the consistent effort put forth by Dom that I see with the rest of the team. If my perception is correct (laziness), could this factor into his practice habits too (not a gym rat and working hard to develop his game like other guys do)? No inside info, just wondering.

Reports I get are Dom puts in a lot of time before and after scheduled practice. I believe Fran has said the same. If some don't believe in Uhl as a player so be it but to make it something more than that...such as lazy, not interested is factual wrong.

Its unfair to paint it something it isn't but hey everyone has the right to post what ever they feel like.

I agree Wagner has a chance to be terrific and I have posted previously that Wagner is the team vocal leader. I also posted that I would love to see Wagner & Cook in the game together more. But I'm not into pitting Uhl against Wagner. I want "both" to play well .. which will only help us win.

I've never been a doghouse counter...I've witnessed & heard the Fran in your face with many players over the years. I agree Fran is not the type to throw his players under the bus with the media ... that doesn't mean after reviewing game film that someone played better than he thought.

If Fran indicated ball movement he's really reaching. Uhl has shown he's not one of the better passers on the team for a couple years now. The game just doesn't come naturally to him. If he used his ball handling to set up other teammates that would be great but I have rarely seen him do that. "Keeping the offense flowing" is exactly what Uhl struggles with. Pemsl and Wagner have both shown great passing ability that would actually translate to a free flowing offense.

I don't think Fran needs couch coaches saying he's "reaching". An opinion is one thing but at the risk of getting hollered at again, you saying Fran was wrong? Fran was talking about feeding the post and Uhl has been doing that quite well.

I'm just going off a quote from McCaffery (may have been in relation to exhibition games) about thinking Uhl didn't play well until watching film. One of the things he said was that he did a great job feeding the post and spacing the floor. I don't know, but I'll go with McCaffery's judgment. I'll also wait until Iowa plays in the B10. Uhl is one of the few guys who has played in big games and done well (Michigan State, for example). He'll be an important player for Iowa this year even if he isn't the MOST important player.

couldn't agree more...way too early to decide much of anything.

Uhl is a huge ball stopper and kills the flow of the offense. Despite his lucky stretch last year he has shown he's not a good shooter but continues to take those shots. He has good handles but he struggles to finish at the rim. His post defense is atrocious and although he's a good offensive rebounder he's not very good on the defensive boards.

He really doesn't offer much at all in comparison to the other guys. Pemsl and Wagner are both willing passers and just have a better feel for the game. Wagner is better in pretty much every aspect of the game. Pemsl provides a lot offensively and and is obviously learning defensively but I wouldn't say he's any worse than Uhl at this point.

I think Fran gave him the benefit of the doubt at the beginning of the year because he is a Junior and the competition let him play around with lineups but unless Uhl makes a drastic turnaround it's going to be hard to continue giving him minutes with the other pieces that Fran could use.
While I agree that he needs to work at his defensive rebounding, finishing, and intensity, he's not going to disappear from the lineup IMO. He has enough tools to contribute, and has the potential to take his game to a level that would make him a very good B1G player. We are replacing 57 minutes per game, in the front court, with no players with more than 1 season of playing experience. All our Big's are a work in progress. I could see Uhl disappearing from the starting lineup, but not the playing rotation.

Yeah, two games against paltry competition does not suffice in making a judgment. Let's see how Cook, Pemsl, and other freshman and sophomores do against real teams before relegating Uhl to the end of the bench.

Wagner will be in the starting rotation just like how Fran inserted P Jok into starting rotation early-mid way through his sophomore year. Fran is giving Uhl a chance which is good.
