He's giving us much better minutes then I thought he would. IMO he is still a year away from getting it all figured out, but I like that he can go outside and cause some match up issues. Like Jok I think he can defend better then he is as a soph,, but if he makes the same commitment Peter did the ability is there.

I think we miss Jones before the year is out but I'm feeling better about our bench bigs every game. Baer is just unreal. With a little more muscle he will be special. Vidnovick like.

Im pretty pleased with him for the most part.

He still does some dumb things like when he stopped running on that fast break right before Mike dropped a pass to him that should have been an easy 2.

He still needs to be more aggressive on the drive when he has a post player guarding him on the perimeter.

his defense needs to pick up about another 50%

Uhl seems to be a very strong player, tough to move out, also mobile...I like him...we need more of that.

Uhl is playing much better, but he still hasn't come close to reaching his potential, especially around the basket on both ends. I wish Dom would learn to take it strong to the basket, when he gets inside. Make the other team stop you from dunking, and you will almost always at least be going to the line. He also needs to keep working on boxing off on the defensive board and rebounding with both hands. That sounds more critical than I probably should be, but he has the physical tools to be very good, if he would just do the basics very well.

I can see Dom having the type of career that Gabe had where if he would have redshirted that 5th year could be a breakout all B1G type year. I'm glad Fran is starting to RS more of these guys now.

Dom needs to mentally buy in to being a post player. He still seems a little soft. He's got the athleticism and size to handle the post. He just needs to compete hard consistently. Finishing around the basket will come with time, but there is no reason he can't use maximum effort on the boards and help defense.

He definitely struggled with post defense last night. I don't know if he will ever be great in the post. I think Fran will have to make some lineup adjustments. I would much rather see Wagner down there even if he gives up a few inches, he can be physical enough to bother some guys.

Wouldnt be surprised to see Dom split time at the 3 and 4 posisitons next year if one of the FR can step up and give around 15 mins a game in the post. With Woody gone the post could get exposed even more if Dom doesnt improve his post D. With Uthoff gone wouldnt be shocked if Fran uses Dom's long frame to guard some shooters on the outside. Iowa really needs Wagner to learn quick and for atleast one FR to give Iowa around 15 mins in the post and hopefully another that can give us Wagner type minutes.

I've been impressed with Dom this season. He's definitely taken a positive leap forward in production this season. What has impressed me the most about his play so far is that he's shooting 43% from 3. He's becoming more comfortable behind the arc and I think as his career progresses we'll see him start to shoot more 3's. Going forward I hope that someone other than Dom is relied on to play the 5. I think he's best suited at the 4, though he could play some 3. My hope would be Kriener can take over the 5 but that's a lot to ask of a freshman.

Its nice to see Dom have some success, and he seemed more engaged on the bench last night which is good to see. Like Jok early in his career, Dom still needs to tighten up his game...he is very loose with the ball and it sure seems like he travels about every time he has the ball on the perimeter, switching his pivot foot, etc. He is also a little quick in jacking up perimeter shots, but overall he is continuing to get better which is great to see. He has done a really nice job backing up Woody and I like when Fran has Woody and Dom in at the same time, I like that look and hope we see more of it.

Dom needs a new hairstyle. He doesn't look the part of a serious player.

LMAO!

I think he is still growing into his new body and learning to play with more muscle.

Just keep bringing energy Dom and keep crashing the glass. Good things will (and are) happening for him and the Hawks

He is a perplexing player and maybe the Olaseni reference above is accurate relative to time needed for development. Uhl looks like he wants to shoot every open 3, then hears the voice of Fran in his head and decides not to. One move looks decisive / fluid and the next looks like me picking out shoes for my wife. He made a nice spin move in the lane but the shot rolled out. We could use that dynamic if he can gain confidence off the bounce.

He's a work in progress. He's at his best when he can get a few positives going early, which is like most players. He appears to be thinking still when he should be engaged, which is why he's a half step slow, IMO. He'll be fine.

Uhl needs to bulk up. I am pretty sure every point Costello scored was when Woody was out of the game. And without Woody, MSU got many 2nd shots. While on the subject, I think Woody's size in the paint kept MSU under control on the boards.

He did bulk up. What you see is what you'll get.

Can't be, Woodbury sucks and he can't dunk.

I actually think he might have bulked up too much. Lose about 10-15 by next season and be that hybrid 4 his skills suggest he is. I'm not sure why everyone wants guys taller than 6'7 to always bulk up.

I'd argue that Dom isn't a post, he's a wing capable of taking guys inside if the opportunity allows. His skill set suggests he'll be something along the lines of a combo of White and Uthoff, more skilled than White (not as skilled as Uthoff), but a bit more post up game than Uthoff.

I agree he may never be a thick guy in the paint. I am hopeful Cook will be next year, as I believe he weighs 240 now. You need someone with enough bulk to sort of back guys away from the basket when on defense and then get the rebound. Uhl and Wagner don't have that.
On edit, I just looked at Uhl's stats. 21 minutes and THREE rebounds. That pretty well sums it up.

I think he may be about 5/10 pounds to heavy. I'm sure that was by design since he is our back up center. Next year I believe both Kreiner and Cook come in at 240 to man the 5. And Uhl can go back to being a slashing 4.

Red has it here for me in bold. Had a chance to go to the Tennessee Tech game and watched Dom do some pre-game dribbling drills and has anybody else seen this??

My O My does he have impressive handles for a guy his size. If you get a chance to catch his pre-game warm-up...do. When Red talks about upside with Dom....there is so much more Dom can do both inside and out. You can just tell when he has his dribble on the perimeter he wants to do more, take his man off the dribble to the rim and I think he will do more of this in time.....

I've always been excited about his potential because of his handles with his height. I hear per Tom he takes the time and works very hard on his game and after watching him do those dribbling drills, he is dong something after hours with a basketball in his hands.

That something I noticed when Dom first arrived in Iowa City. For a guy his height he still handles the ball like a skilled guard.

Yep Dan....his handles are very impressive. Putting on a vid dribbling clinic before the game.....very low and very tight dribbling.

Do you get the feeling that if called upon like Uthoff has been this year, that Dom could be scoring more points? It seems to me like he defers to others.

Yep, I do.....he needs to improve his shot better but I feel like he is anxious to do more from the perimeter because he has the skills to do it. I think we've seen this improvement or confidence through the years with many players as they mature their play. They get better or the light goes on and if they are skilled enough which I think Dom is and he is physically big enough, a player like him could really impact a game....

I certainly hope he does because we lose a lot next year and players are going to have to step up in a big way.

There was one play against MSU when Dom drove into the lane and made a nice pass/dump to Wagner who took a quick strong baseline move to the rim and drew 3 Sparty defenders and the hard foul with 2 foul shots for Ahmad. I liked this play by both and I hope we see this more going forward.

The kid has definitely improved since last season. Clearly still in the learning and growing stage but you can see more potential than he showed last year. The MSU bigs pushed him around, which they do almost everyone, and he got some boards and tipped balls into play. At the same time the MSU bigs pushed him around.

There just aren't that many kids really ready to play as freshman and sophomore year is almost always a big learning year. Dom Uhl looks like the guy who arrives a skinny kid with a pretty raw game, stays for four years; eats like a starved werewolf, lifts like Arnold, and learns the game on season at a time. Then leaves as a pretty rugged 22 year old young man. The key is keeping 'em on campus, eligible and improving.

I just don't think the light has come on yet for Dom. I don't think he knows how good he can be. He just doesn't seem aggressive by nature. If he can change that attitude, at least when he is on the floor, I think he will be a star. He has all the tools.
