I believe his dad didn't push wrestling on him at a young age so he's still a relative neophyte from a competition and/or experience standpoint compared to many and now that he's embraced the sport he's catching up. That's to Terry's credit as I think most would have the impression that he's had him in competitions and pushing him hard since diapers.
