*******Iowa vs UCLA Game Thread*******

Our defense gave up 20 points and got 3 turnovers. Face it, Iowa’s issues are on the other side of the ball, specifically the O-line and its coach.
The D couldn’t get off the field which means the O gets no rhythm. This game was all on the D…100%

could’ve been a 40-10 game, so in a sense we won

The weak point today was the defense. And we have one of the most coveted d-coordinators in college football.

The offensive talent at QB/WR isn't there yet, obviously. But we've made great strides offensively this year.

If we had talent at those two positions and the defense was playing full tilt we'd probably have 1 loss this yearr.

Is what it is, unfortunately. But I think we're on the right track with our coaching staff.

Your point stands, but there were way too many 3rd and longs where defense couldn't get off the field.

Castro was brutal, Harris was lost, Schulte was Schulte and X didn't have a tackle all nite.
Can't think of a single guy on defense that was even "average" tonite.

I think that the whole team has been revitalized with Sullivan at QB1. I expect an inspired effort from everyone, starting last week, from there on out.

Other than the "slow start" (IE, no points in the first quarter last week), all units have been cooking with gas since just before halftime vs NW a couple weeks ago.

[I don't count NW punt return TD, as a black mark, because Iowa had called off the dogs and only the backups were on the coverage unit at that point]

The D was gutted all game long. Looked like a Big 12 D. Two forced turnovers in the red zone salvaged what would have been a blowout.

OL was also brutal. But(!), I don't care who is playing QB, you have to have a sliver of a passing game.

UCLA 9-14 on 3rd and worst part avg distance was 8 yards on them. We were lucky even in the game at the end with 2 bad turnovers in the end zone by their qb.

At least the UCLA bball team is losing by 13 to Little Dicky Pitino in the 2nd half right now.

The Hawks are really banged up and in positions that don’t have a lot of established depth….they played poorly for a lot of the game…..yet, it took a 59 yd. FG to beat them…
It’s a good thing they have the week off…. Maybe some bodies will heal in time for Maryland and Nebraska.
Go Hawks!

The O got no rhythm because their d-line was dominant. Had nothing to do with our d. I’ll say it again, they gave up 20 points. Our o-line sucks, that’s what lost this game.
and the D got curb stomped by a soft UCLA offense . OL should go make tampon commercials

I wouldn't say it was all on the D, but the first series of the game was the only time it felt like the defense put the offense in an advantageous situation. Otherwise UCLA was getting 5.4 per carry and consistently converting 3rd downs. Kind of like you said, not much to generate momentum from.

I hope they all get the whoopin of a lifetime , maybe it will turn them into actual alphas instead of starbuck's goofs

Our defense gave up 415 yards and couldn’t get off the field. What game were you watching?
Don’t care about yards, points is what matters. Our offense couldn’t sustain drives because Sully was getting hit on every dropback and KJ was getting hit as soon as he touched the ball. Yes, the D played bad but at what point is giving up 20 points terrible defense.

The offense reverted to 2022 form. No presnap motion. Same thing as the MSU game.

I don’t think the ucla offense has been “soft” the past couple of weeks. Iowa has trouble with Mobil QBs…Very disappointed about tonight…Hawks have a lot of important players injured…maybe get a couple back in 2 weeks.

the “d” got bailed out 3 times tonight…UCLA really exposed them…. Much like the MSU game.

Run game was shut down....Lester will need to figure that out. Defense got shredded and if not for some good plays by defense/bad plays by UCLA QB they would have put up a couple more TDs. This game was not as close.

Did Sullivan have a concussion and Doctors made the call? Stratton actually played okay but , Kirk Ferenz is the guy that kept Beathard taking snaps with 1-leg vs Florida St in Bowl Game, so not like KF gets worried about QB's taking a beating.

Stratton looked better than McNamara. McNamara would have thrown some INTs and fumled the ball with no run game.

Because kirk was peeing his pants again and orders Lester to call conserstive plays

Bruins 415 yds on offense tells me the D was a problem. 9 of 14 on 3rd down

I would say it was disappointing to see the number of guys "striking" the ball carrier and not wrapping up. We had numerous times in the game where we could have stopped them on third down and they bounced off and continued down the field past the chains. I didn't think the LB's were bad, but if the DL gets pushed back out of their gaps the Lb's can't play nearly as clean and make those tackles like they usually do.
