Most hawk fans thought with raveling's recruiting and davis coaching, the hawks could go to the moon and win title after title. Maybe with spurlock's recruiting and fran's coaching , this dream could come true. With more athleticism on the horizen, our defense will be better. Fran has shown he can coach offense.

Here's the flaw with your theory.

At some point you have to call a spade a spade. Iowa hasn't advanced to the sweet 16 since 1999. I will always appreciate what Fran did to resurrect this program after Lick took it to a single-wide status, but it's time to move on.

1. Spurlock is no George Raveling.
2. Fran is no Tom Davis.

No amount of athleticism will result in a Fran coached team playing good defense even if the players are individually good defenders.

The Grinnell system?

I wouldn't mind DeVries either but I think McCollum is a better coach. Can only imagine what he would be able to do with Big Ten level athletes. He's very focused on every little detail and you can tell how connected his teams are. It's really fun to watch.
Ha yeah it would be nice if Fran had some Big 10 level athletes for McCollum to coach.

Same here, but if the regression continues he might be leaving it the way he found it. That's what worries me the most. And despite some exciting moments in time, there were still zero tournament runs and zero championships in between. If the program starts and ends the same way then his tenure was kind of a waste.

Remind me. What's the definition of insanity, again?

Fran had good talent with the Marble, White, Uthoff, Jok teams. Again with Garza, JBo, Murray, Wieskamp. Still couldn't get out of the first weekend of the tournament, or even come close to winning the Big Ten. Don't tell me the Big 10 Tournament that one year, that's one good weekend of basketball. I mean regular season title.

I don't know who will stick around from this recruiting class, but the cupboards are far from empty on this one. It's not even remotely close IMO, plus NIL makes it an entirely different game.

Exactly. And I'm gonna keep pullin' for Drake in the MVC Tourney and the NCAA.
I won't root against them, but I have problems pulling for the private school in the state. I know most posters here still have problems because of the game at UNI, but I will always pull for UNI from the MVC.

I think it's kind of irrational to judge overall success on 1 or 2 games at the end of a season. Lute only did it once, Davis did it once with George's kids and somehow did in his last year. It's never been a regular thing to have such expectations

Twice apiece, actually. Lute made the FF in 1980 and S16 in 1983. Davis made the E8 in 1987 and S16 in 1988.

Davis had a 5 seed in '99, and beat 4th seed Arkansas in the 2nd round, so it's not like that was a miracle winning 2 games when you say "somehow".

I have no doubt the 1993 team would've done it as well, but losing Chris Street obviously had an affect on that. That team still lost a close 2nd round game to WF in the 4/5 matchup.

I don't think anyone is expecting a Sweet 16 or better run every year, but ONE time past the first weekend since 1988? The program just needs to do better. I'm looking mainly at Alford, Lickliter and Fran.

Just to be clear, you are fine with regular season titles and 1 or 2 round exits. What's funny to me is that it is something UNI can accomplish with resources that pale in comparison (were it not for a melt down would have done it again), but with a NPOY couldn't get past the second round, I mean come on.

What does being a private school have anything to do with not rooting for Drake? It’s not like they are spending big bucks buying players.

The fact they are a small private school that is having success in basketball is a good reason to root *for* them, IMO.

There's work to be done in the regular season to get off that 7-10 seed line, so you're not facing a 1 or 2 in the 2nd round. It even took Keegan's team, who was upset by Richmond in round 1, to win the BTT to get to the 5 line. The lack of guard play, defending, etc.......adds up and those Iowa seeds are the result. Good enough metrics to get the NCAA bid and that's about it. You're not advancing in that tournament with guard play and defense like Iowa has had, which showed up against Oregon, as a 2 seed as well.

UNI’s magical run was 15 years ago. Last tournament was 9 years ago where they pulled the biggest choke job in tournament history, blowing a 9 pt lead with a minute to go.

Probably because I’m a UNI fan, and Drake grads are exactly what you are describing as nepotism babies. Glad I could clear that up

less than a minute to go as well, sorry that UNI basketball hurt you

And there it is….UNI fan. That tells me all I need to know.

Living in the Des Moines area I know and have met NUMEROUS Drake grads, and have yet to come across a “nepotism baby”.

Thanks for showing me you don’t know what you are talking about.

It certainly didn't hurt me but they haven't ever really recovered it. Haven't made the tournament since that happened.
They have absolutely dropped off, and it's tough in a 1 bid league, attrition hurts too. Covid year was super promising with Green, but I will say IMO I think Iowa would be in a better position with Jacobson at the helm in comparison to Fran.
