Drake

I'm alm in on UNI. I graduated from there, but have been an Iowa fan all my life. Coach Jacobsen is both a good coach and a good guy. I'm sure he's been approached to coach at bigger schools, but stays there and I'm very happy he does. I'm not at all a fan of Farley the football coach.
Jacobsen’s days if being look at by bigger schools is over.

losing a 12 point lead in the ncaa tournament in 40 seconds.

only #1 seed in MVC tourney to every lose the opening game.

epic collapse in mvc final.

has a borderline all American in Green and he can’t sniff the ncaa tournament. In a conference where Wichita State and Creighton left.

Uni starts five guards, that is a disaster against any real school.

basically he hasn’t done a damn thing in years. You are not selling that to any “big” school.

Speaking as a Drake fan, their AD has really done a solid job with his two basketball hires and has done a really good job with pushing the “Des Moines team” marketing approach. The games against Loyola, UNI, and Mo State were packed and place was rocking.

But I still don’t believe DeVries will be there much longer.

But yes Murray St and Belmont are awesome additions to the MVC. I think Loyola will get smacked around pretty good in the A10 and I’m not convinced Valentine is gonna be a great coach. Too early to tell.
The Mo State game was not rocking. I bought 2nd row seats an hour before game. Numerous empty seats. Atmosphere was really disappointing.

Fair. I thought atmosphere was good but the game was a grinder. Not as good as the other two, I’ll definitely give you that. Weekend vs weeknight game factor there too.

It was a grinder. Really disappointing loss for Bulldogs.

He could have and should have left 5-7 years ago. Green is playing on hip replacement surgery like JBO, having a nice season but nowhere near the player he was. All credit to his battling back. And the reason he’s playing 5 guards is because Phyfe has had Covid related issues. And he’s probably going to win the league unfortunately. He’s done a nice job this year. He’s had a lot of success. And he’s beaten KU in the tournament. This is coming from a Drake and Iowa fan.

Iowa should play Drake and UNI each year. Those are games Iowa wins 98% of the time while still providing better wins than the OOC schedule this year.

The pitifully small gates for Iowa's OOC games, CHA looks empty, could be significant offset for a share of the gate if they played the games in Wells Fargo. I think DSM would turn out. Been a few years and the City might turn out, if properly advertised.

Murray State is joining the Missouri Valley this summer and are ranked 22nd or so with only 2 losses. Appears to be a good addition basketball wise.
Missouri Valley also getting Belmont which I believe is having a good year too and historically a very good program. I actually think the Valley will be better. Until recently Loyola-Chicago has been average at best.

This needs to be played in DSM at Wells Fargo.
1) use big 10 refs
2) get the “net” advantage of neutral site
3) drive higher ooc attendance w Des Moines fans that won’t drive to CHA for Campbell St, etc

Also, regarding the small income from OCC games - I think the season ticket holders have paid and so we still get what, maybe 8 to 10 thousand ticket income. If we only got 1/4 the income from a game in Des Moines, we probably lose money.

Also games vs Alcorn State are $25-30 vs $80-100 for these in DSM double headers.
Drake and UNI would take probably 30% combined to get the opportunity.
Smaller percentage of much bigger pot with other benefits.

I think Jacobson in a sense like KF is happy where he is at. Loves living in CF, has a lot of job stability and has been successful. Also seeing how things went down for McDermott may have factored in his decision not to leave unless the right opportunity came up which it didn't when his name was hot. Luckily McDermott landed Creighton when it was still on the UNI level which it isn't anymore and having one of the top 10 scorers ever with his son helped as well when he took that job. Honestly I see Campbell for ISU heading down this same path for football. Started off on fire, cooled off still had some decent success, no threat of losing his job but all those bigger better jobs won't be there anymore as the years go on. With Green it's been just bad luck with the injuries because so rare for a program like that to land a top 100 talent who turned down Virginia.

They should resume playing the games at Wells Fargo. Two games featuring the four teams with Iowa and ISU playing either Drake or UNI in alternate years.

I think Iowa would play either team, maybe both every year, as long as the games are at Carver.

I'd even be ok if they played every year rotating home and neutral with Drake playing their "home" game at the Well and UNI playing their "home" game in Cedar Rapids or some other neutral site... Heck up in Sioux Falls again playing UNI or Sioux City. Get more fans engaged around all corners of the state.
