See below. Other than Drew there are two other Iowa guys playing for Ottawa, Jovon Johnson and Nate McMillan. If I remember right Nate didnt play much his senior year as he was hurt.

We went to one of the games last summer. I saw Drew recently at a Texas HS game. We might try and make another one next summer before college and pro season starts in the USA.

Calgary Stampeders general manager John Hufnagel is pleased to announce that international quarterback Drew Tate has signed a contract extension. As per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

A nine-year CFL veteran who has spent the past seven seasons with the Red and White, Tate in 2015 dressed for all 18 regular-season games and both playoff contests. He started the final regular-season game and was 18-of-22 for 231 yards and two touchdowns.

“Drew has been an important contributor to our success over the years and I’m pleased that he has chosen to make this commitment to the club,” said Hufnagel. “Quality and depth at the quarterback position is very important in the CFL and Drew is a big part of that for us.”

After two seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in which he did not see any game action, Tate signed with the Stampeders in 2009. In 111 career regular-season games for the Stamps, he has completed 353 of 529 passes (a 66.7-per cent completion rate) for 4,415 yards and 32 touchdowns. He has 157 career rushes for 609 yards and 24 touchdowns. In 2014, he led the CFL with 10 rushing touchdowns.

“This is a great city and a great organization and I’m thankful for the opportunity to continue my career with the Stamps,” said Tate. “I love playing with this group of guys and I look forward to the challenge of trying to get back to the Grey Cup.”

Just spent seven months in Canada and attended a CFL game in Hamilton. It's a great game with great fans. I hope Tevaun Smith gets a shot at the NFL, but it would also really be sweet to see him catch a few of those Drew Tate bombs in the Grey Cup (although he would probably rather play for the Argos or the Tigercats - which are both nearer to his Canadian home...) The Hawkeyes are also well represented in the defensive backfield - they are the crème de la crème.

Way to go, Drew. And thanks, OP, for sharing.

I have absolutely no idea what some of these former Hawks could make in the CFL. Anyone know?

Yeah- It's kind of rough...

Drew does well- at $300K a season, he's apparently about 3rd in the league for quarterbacks; but the average salary for non-quarterbacks is about $60K (Canadian- which is about $45K US).

Jovon Johnson is a superstar in the CFL- named the Defensive Player of the year and a 5-tinme All-League - I wasn't able to find Jovon's salary, but you might find this note from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers website interesting:

Consider this: Bomber cornerback Jovon Johnson -- arguably as gifted an athlete as there is in the CFL -- starred at Iowa alongside Robert Gallery (Oakland Raiders, $5.99 million) and grew up and played with Bob Sanders (Indianapolis Colts, $3.95 million). He had his shot with the Steelers in 2006 before coming north. But to see college teammates making that kind of dough...

"Ahh, I'm happy with my situation," said Johnson. "You can't think about that. If you did it would drive you crazy because you always run into players who aren't necessarily better than you or don't prepare like you do but are making way more money. But what can you do? I have my career. I've been blessed for this opportunity, whether it's here or in the NFL. I'm having fun and I love the guys I'm around. What more could you ask for?"

I was in Canada a few months back, talked to a guy who played in the CFL, and a couple of former Hawks. They don't make all that much money. The elite players make decent money like Drew, but they certainly aren't getting rich for the most part.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that minimum salary for benchwarmers is 45k, not the average. I had no idea, just read a couple articles after a google and that's what I saw. From what I've seen the average appears to be about double that.

Yes, I read that the minimum salary is indeed $45K (Canadian) - which is about $36K American; but that the league average for non-quarterbacks was about $60K Canadian (or $45K American).

What the heck, Drew has had a fine career in Canada. He game Iowa fans some fantastic memories and lead us to one of our most memorable seasons.

I always thought the NFL might sniff him a little.
