Eliminate Prisons, Bring Back Stocks

[What Would Jesus Do?]

Instead of stocks, maybe a smallish cage with a porta potty.

Declare a convict an outlaw for a set number of hours or days. Put them in the cage for the assigned sentence with adequate water and kibble. Post their offense on the cage so people can read what they've done. Let them out when their time is up.

The point of declaring them an "outlaw" is because for the term of their sentence, they are outside all law.

Let the public inflict whatever punishment they think the convict deserves. The law looks the other way.

A jaywalker gets an hour and has some rotten veggies thrown at him. A child rapist gets a week and probably doesn't survive that long.

Naturally there will be live internet feeds.

Will it be brutal? Probably. Sometimes.

Will it quickly reduce crime? I'd give odds.

I can think of a few offenses that this would be appropriate. How about telemarketers that scam the elderly? Not a great use of prison space to lock them up, but it would be nice to throw garbage at them.
