My co worker had to go to the ER last Monday. There for 5-6 hours. Cat scan, an IV and some fluids and a couple visits from the doctor. Her medical bill was 46k. I know the discounts and what not, but holy shit that is absurd.

I don't believe it.

Just had a kid in the ER.

Two X-rays, IV, pain meds, couple of visits from the doctor just like you say.

Was something like $2.5k BEFORE insurance.

Yes a CT would be more than an X-ray, but we had two scan charges.

I have a hard time believing what she told you. Not to mention, she already received her bill? That's record timing.

BTW, I think out of pocket we ended up paying $1.1k.

It's how med billing works.

Everything is priced about 3x; insurers pay a negotiated rate about 1/3 of that
$14-15k for a bunch of imaging diagnostics is pretty typical. Those add up quickly.

Does he not have health insurance? Even on a minimal premium the out of pocket max is like $5k. You guys dictionary salesmen?

But yes agreed, the healthcare industry is disgusting. The sad part is they are bleeding (no pun intended) money right now. Record profits from COVID to complete nosedive

Dont forget, while we subsidize israels defense, they give their citizens universal healthcare
We do the same in Europe. Our soldiers stationed in Germany and paid for by Americans allow the Germans to spend money on universal healthcare for their own citizens.

She would have absolutely zero reason to lie about it. I do agree she received it really fast. Not sure if it was the insurance breakdown or what.

My next door neighbor had a new roof put on last month. I was trimming a hedge between us and a roofing nail went through the sole of my shoe and broke the skin so I had to go to an Urgent Care at my PCP’s orders( they didn’t have tetanus shot supply in stock)
Medicare is supposed to pick it up in full but we’ll see.

They are paying for all those that don’t pay their ER bills. There is an easy fix for this. Universal healthcare. Talk to you GOP congresspeople.
The squad ran on universal healthcare and couldn't get Pelosi to put it up for vote.

Of course she has insurance. 2k out of pocket for her on this I believe. I was just pointing out what the total bill was. It doesn't have all the discounts and whatnot that the insurance is willing to pay.

A CT can easily be $5K to $6K before insurance.

I’m sorry, point me to someone agreeing with your $15k number.

A typical CT on average in Iowa is going to cost between $2k-$3k.
Someone just posted $5-6k for their facility.
And we have no idea if this was an "average" CT or something requiring more diagnostic services to go with that.

Also, ER time is not cheap.

Now, quote the entire range of imaging costs for every diagnostic procedure they run.

Because those are not an "average" of $2-3k, Cletus.
Oh, so now you are running about FIVE scans on your average patient?

You said PRETTY TYPICAL.

Lmao.

Just walk away dude.

Specific CT Scan Procedures and National Cost Averages

Being a female patient going to an ER, she's most likely getting an abdominal or pelvic CT.

Those are not "average" for costs, Cletus.

Once again, just walk away.

I’m literally the worst person on this entire forum you could have found to argue this topic.

Once again, numbers are posted.

For actual charges, not "billed amounts". And what the insurer ends up paying is what the "actual charges" are, which will not be $46k.

I get, I’ve made plenty of responses where I pull shit out my ass.

Like you just now.

It’s ok.

Move on.

Check that box when you do your annual elections to pay the couple bucks a month for the supplemental injury insurance. It will pay you more than makes you whole because it pays for each injury you have and every test you have done.
