ESPN’s Danny Kanell Puts Iowa Ahead Of Alabama In His Latest Playoff Foursome

After easily the craziest college football Saturday of the year, all eyes are on the members of the playoff selection committee as they get set to announce their new top four this Tuesday. ESPN’s Danny Kanell isn’t part of said committee, but it’s a sure bet that Iowa Hawkeyes fans wish that he was right about now. Kanell actually has Iowa above Alabama in his latest foursome – a decision that’s likely to cause some controversy.

Kanell basically has the only two undefeated teams left – Clemson and Iowa – and his two best one-loss teams in the country, in that order. He even got into it a bit with an SEC fan.

@dannykanell the fact that Iowa is above Bama further proves my point

.@SECbooger go drink the SEC Kool aid. I'll rank the teams where they deserve to be ranked. #undefeated

Whether Kanell is right or wrong, Iowa’s path to the playoff is simple. If the Hawkeyes can beat both Nebraska and whichever team represents the Big Ten East in the league’s title game, they’re in.

I saw Kanells explanation this morning on M&M.

He felt Alabama needed to be penalized for losing to a 3 loss team at home somehow now matter how good they were playing now. And given the way the SEC looked against FCS teams last weekend, it was obvious to him maybe the SEC isn't as good as the perception is.

Add in their best two wins probably aren't as valuable any more (LSU, Wisconsin)...undefeated trumps one loss.

Keep in mind, he still thinks Alabama is better...but if you look at things right now...I get his overall point.

You should get credit for being undefeated in the B10, and should be penalized for losing one game to a not great team at home in a not as powerful as we thought conference.

When Finebaum was putting together his top 4, he said he finally put us in his top 25. (I think he meant top 6, cause he mentioned his 5 than Iowa) and said we were a good team. Guise, we made it .

Some guy on CBS radio put them at 2 also. He blamed it on Bama playing a cupcake in week 12. I dont agree with that reasoning, I like this guy's reason better.

I caught his explaination on R&K over my lunch hour. Basically said going undefeated in a Power 5 conference is tough and Bama's loss need to be penalized. He said he would pick Bama to beat Iowa but that Iowa should be rewarded for being undefeated. He also stressed that this isn't a prediction of where teams will fall at the end of the season, but how they stack up if the season ended today.

*Edit: I don't think he thinks Iowa is one of the 4 best teams but they have one of the 4 best resumes and you can't pick the CFP on who you think is good but you have to pick on what teams have done. All Iowa has done is gone 11-0 in a P5 conference and played 2 P5 teams out of conference.

Honestly, it doesn't really matter what seed we get if we make the playoff. I don't care if we are #1 or #4. In the first round, we would be playing a very good team, and would likely be an underdog, at least in terms of point spreads and betting lines. #2 and #3 especially don't matter any, as those two teams play each other the first game anyway.

People will get all pissed off about where we'd end up being seeded, but we'll certainly have to beat 2 very good teams to win the championship, if we get that far.

They beat 22/23 Miss St too. I'm surprised of the lack of love for Pitt in the rankings.

They are certainly good enough to be ranked, based on what I've seen of them in person and in later games. However, they have yet to beat any good teams. They have losses to three currently-ranked teams, but their best wins are Duke and Louisville (both at 6-5). They might sneak into the bottom of the rankings with a win over 7-4 Miami this week, but they'll need some help through losses above them. This appears to be quite possible for them, assuming they can win.
