ESPN article on "new" Ferentz

Great article. I am very pleased about the team's adoption of GPS and recovery monitoring. Would never have thought KF would get on board with that, but well done Coach.

Thanks for posting OP.

I think Iowa has utilized these tools for a couple years, not something they added in just the past season.

That's an interesting photo they used of Kirk there. I don't ever remember him looking quite that old before in any pic I've seen.

Iowa was one of the first 2 or three schools to use GPS.

I spoke with Kirk last spring, and he has a few other technological changes that might be coming in the future.

Excellent article. Any good coach or manager in any field who is worth their salt will take a good hard look at their product/program each year and see what needs to be done. Sometimes those changes area productive, sometimes not. Last season Iowa was much more up tempo, this season they seem to have settled back to a more traditional approach in play tempo. It seems as if all of the coaches and players are on the same page and that could lead to a very interesting Big 10 season. We might not have the talent that some teams have, but this staff might have a better grip on what the players can and cannot do and will put them in positions to be successful.

Can someone explain what GPS and recovery monitoring means in terms of coaching a football team? Do we have lojack devices on all the players now?

Yes, they put GPS trackers, usually on the shoulder pads. Then their movement is tracked. From the data, you can see what a guy's work output was during the practice was, top speed, etc. ... and then compare that to other practices -- gives an early indication if top speed is dropping, for example, that he needs more recovery time. Some systems include heart rate and acceleration.

Basically big data applied to football and human movements. Very interesting area right now.

Huh. Cool.

I can't believe ESPN ran with that, wasn't it an Onion article first? KF changing his stripes? Good one!

Our apologies to any Wisconsin fans - or coaches - who read that. Ain't gonna get any new tricks out that ol' dog KF.

So nothing to see here Badger folks, kindly move along ...

It was written locally before ESPN at least.

I think it is funny that CJB called out "bandwagon" fans on ESPN article and in his interview on hawkcentral............yes he is talking directly to some of you LOL

Most of the people that were pissed about the program were pissed that the best QB was sitting on the bench

That is the ironic aspect of the quote.....nobody likes bandwagon fans....ship gets a little water in it and you can really tell who's really in, some just start jumping

Very good article.

Rest from Thursday mornings all the way to game time. Huge change.

Beathard says fans "on the outside know nothing" Yep.

This reinforces just how big a win Saturday would be. A loss doesn't destroy you, just a set back. A win, propels you to absolutely huge possibilities. Not just this year but going forward.
