Ex NU recruit Beard...

Would be weird for him to choose PSU given that his other top choices (Cornell and Northwestern) are both schools with good academics.

Unless he didn't really care about the academics in the first place.

So his final 3 were Northwestern, Cornell and PSU?

This is some real head in the sand action here. Iowa has good academics. So does PSU

Sure they do. Nothing wrong with either. But there's not a lot of overlap between Iowa/PSU on one side and Cornell/NW/Stanford/Duke type schools on the other.

Again, not saying WHICH he should pick, just saying that they're from different tiers. It'd be like a recruit's final 3 wrestling choices being PSU, Iowa and Duke. Everyone would say, "Duke???"

PSU is a very good academic institution. Not on the level of Cornell and NW, but still excellent, as is Iowa.

Of the top 225 universities:

NW 12th
Cornell 15th
PSU 50th
Iowa 82nd

Pretty good for everyone, but your point about tiers is correct.

I know. See my edit. I also took back my hating comment. You were right to make your statement. Sorry.

Yes, I agree with you there.

Honestly, if he didn't have NW on there at all I wouldn't think anything of it. I'd just think he liked Cornell and PSU the best.

Coming off an initial NW choice, I wonder if Koll could convince him to go to Cornell since it's a great combo of top wrestling and top academics.

Cornell is actually my guess after some quick research...and the fact that the PSU train has to Stop Somewhere....maybe

Word on BWI is that Cutch (PSU 197) is graduating on time this spring, and intends to get into chiropractic medicine. So he may or may not wrestle next year. PSU is also going after Gavin Hoffman.

Is Hoffman same weight as Beard as a tweener or a true 97?

Screw academics. It is just so damn fun to wrestle at PSU, how could anyone refuse. I heard even the guys riding the pine or not winning much are having so much fun it is just unbelievable. Just listen to how much fun Gulibon and their 133er had this year when they interview them.

I have seen Michael Beard up close a number of times. This year he did wrestle 184 (182+2) at our tournament. After that he went 195. Everybody there was shocked that he was making it - he looked bigger than many of the 220s - the size difference was startling, but these are just HS kids. But he is really put together for how young he is. He is a tank, built like Gabe Dean and at the time, early January, he had either just turned 17 or was still 16 - young for his grade.

I guess he could make 184 in two years, but I don't see how if he grows anymore. I would doubt that a college coach besides John Smith could see him at 184, but then again what do I know.

He is a friggin' terror on top. Neutral he is getting better, but on the mat there are no upperweight equals.

So in your opinion he's a 97?

Time to move on champ. They have fun wrestling and do pretty well. Jealousy isn't a good look.

That would be my opinion, but I'm not a D1 coach. Like I said, he's young and he's grown a lot in the past two years, not sure why that would stop at 16/17, and he's already a tank - probably the largest 184 I've seen this year.
