Ex NU recruit Beard...

Would also like to point out to the conspiracy theorists here about scholarship allocations, that Beard's three schools (NW, Cornell, PSU) give a fairly good indication that scholarship money will not be a concern in where he decides to wrestle.

Not sure he ends up at PSU, Cornell COULD be a great destination for him (although Darmstadt thing is sticky), but if he does there will be cries all over of "just how do they have the money to get all these guys???" Money won't be the reason why.

Money will never be the reason why at PSU ... can you imagine Cael telling Mejia and Renteria that the scholarship offer might not be what they're probably worth, because there are other recruits on the horizon? Yeah, I can't either.

You are missing the point...

If the kid is qualified to attend Cornell and Northwestern, he will probably get a bunch of academic aid, regardless of where he attends school. And given the cost of attending Cornell or Northwestern, the kid probably won't be swayed by what Cael can/can't offer in the form of a scholarship.

Maybe I just underestimated the number of Rhodes Scholars in Happy Valley that just love to hit ankle picks and play flag football in their free time?

possibly...

...or maybe you've underestimated the number of good student/athletes that Cael recruits to HV, so that the 9.9 scholarships can be spread among more athletes ;)

So, kids are probably getting academic scholarships that they wouldn't have received if not for their athletic prowess? I can at least understand that from a logical, not ethical, perspective.

No. Kids are getting academic scholarships because they are good students -- just like the rest of the student population.

So let me get this straight...mostly white kids, middle to upper class, are getting academic schollie money? Yes...this happens every where.

I have no affiliation whatsoever with PSU,just appreciate good wrestling! Seeing Clark win was just as satisfactory as seeing Bo Nickle win! That being said, Brands is just as good a coach as Sanderson. The problem with Iowa is location, location, location. If Brands wants to win,he needs to take the Ohio State, possibly Pitt job,PSU, Rutgers, anywhere the hotbed of wrestling exists (Ohio PA corridor) Okey State is the lone wolf out west with a richer than rich wrestling tradition and Gold Medal coach, and is the exception, not the rule.

I can see it now in the Brands household tonight "Honey, I can go to Pitt for 40% less than what I'm making now, but might win a national championship by year 30 because the admin doesn't support the program. What do you think? Should we do it?" Tom's funeral is Tuesday.

Hey Gavin, I know you just said (and I quote), "I'm not smart," in a recent interview with Takedown Radio, but we here at Penn State think you're selling yourself short, and we'd like to extend to you a 60% academic scholarship. We Are!

Because Iowa doesnt have a richer than rich wrestling tradition and a Gold medal coach.

Dunkej01, I respect your wrestling knowledge and level headedness a great deal, but that is a year old and still only 3 are top 10 PFP guys that otherwise would need a lot of schollarship $.

Considering they have about 10 top 10 PFP type guys, I would expect more than that given the hyperbole about kids not needing much because they are such great students. Usually you are a lot more convincing than that. ;)

well, thanks for replying. Most times I post here I feel like Im on ignore (maybe I should be)....as for the post I replied to said PSU only had 2 academic AA. which was wrong, i merely meant to correct the record.

As or the article itself, of course it was last year because the names for this year wont be announced for another 4-6 weeks. I could post that when it happens, if people promise to keep the rotten tomatoes to a minimum.

As for my hyperbole it would be more directed at the wealthy kids than the smart kids allowing for a greater allocation of athletic aid. Wealthy being perspective too. Some parents arent "rich" but have funds because they are salt of the earth folks and so they have savings that were meant for college in case athletics didnt pan out. it did so they are playing with the houses money so to speak. they got X dollars in the bank and fill gaps in the Cael plan. I know this blows peoples minds, but its real. You got NC and AAs on little to no athletic aid for a variety of reasons.

PSU is a very good academic institution. Not on the level of Cornell and NW, but still excellent, as is Iowa.
Of the top 225 universities:
NW 12th
Cornell 15th
PSU 50th
Iowa 82nd

Pretty good for everyone, but your point about tiers is correct.

Also, you have to consider the strength of the school's major that the student athelete is considering.

For example, If a kid wants to major in Hotel Administration/Hospitality, he is better of going to a school like Michigan State (Ranked Number 82) over PSU (Ranked 50) as their reputation in this area is second only to Cornell.

Actually the only PSU wrestler that is getting academic money is Devon Van Cura. A 4.0 student who is getting a chemistry stipend.

I see Iowa has only one academic AA basketball player - not surprised at all.

I noticed Alex Meyer is on the list with a biology major. If he becomes a doctor, his patients better pray they catch him on a good day.

when you have a bunch of freshman, they're not eligible.
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, students must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

So it's a pretty good number?

i'm surprised it's not a little higher. There are 9 players that were "eligible" for it, and only 1 got it. Surprised Ellingson, Moss, Jok or Jones weren't on it.

So, here's what I've learned from our Penn State insiders:

1) Penn State National Champions and AA's are on little to no athletic scholarships for various reasons, most notably their folks are either wealthy or salt of the earth people that don't mind fronting an outrageously expensive education that their blue chipper inevitably earned for what should be free or nearly free at any other school;

2) There is only 1 guy that nobody's ever heard of that is on an academic scholarship at PSU.

I know Cael is probably a living God by now in the Mormon religion, but he's pulling miracles that would make the Lord Himself have his head on a swivel.

Ohio State was worse - 1 of 10.

While we are on the academic thing, is it possible that NW and Cornell, undergraduate, are just a touch smaller than the big 10 schools and that might aid their selectiveness a bit. Public universities are supposed to be for the (for want of a better term) masses. And while I am at it, if you broke down NW/ Cornell etc. rel to big ten schools, you might want to look at how they compare and contrast in pre-professional education.

If he becomes a surgeon and I am his patient, I hope it is a long surgery.;)
