Expect to see more of Tony Perkins & Ahron Ulis

Stupid IMO.

Toussaint needs all the minutes he can get. Same with Bohannon. February is the point of the season where you start to tighten substitutions.

I think we will see more Ulis and Perkins due to the short turn around time with five games in 11 days against very athletic teams in MSU, tOSU, Rutgers, Indiana, and MSU again. In other words, Iowa needs these two players to help defend their players because Iowa’s first team can’t do it. We see it time and time again with wide open three point shots. Joe Touissant needs to play more too, just slow it down a bit so he doesn’t turn it over.

Ulis has been fairly productive this year in the brief time he has been in. His Assists/TO ratio is about 3/1. He has yet to hit a 3 but he hasn't really shot many, either. He is really picking his moments. He has done very well from the line. I think he deserves some more minutes unless he proves to be a liability.

He's halfway though his second season. I'm sure Fran has told him a thousand times to slow it down a bit.

I like Joe T. But I'm not sure what about his play says he should play more.

sadly I’m in agreement... he’s out of control on offense and is a turnover waiting to happen. I do appreciate his ability (and fearless nature) when driving to the hoop though. Maybe he needs to do more of that and only take the layup attempt if it’s there, otherwise keep the dribble alive or look to kick out to an open shooter.

defensively he’s great though. I honestly believe if he is surrounded by guys like Garza, JW, JBo, Frederick he can be the PG as they’ll take the shots that guys like Nunge, Connor, Patrick, and Keegan won’t take, or make enough. Edit to add somebody has to make good entry passes to Luka, and it seems Connor is best at that.

Ulis is a better pg than Toussaint.

Strong statement for a guy who's played about 15 minutes of non-scrub time in his entire career. He could be good, we will see, I'm just not sure what he's shown that's made this board fall in love with him over the last week or so.

Bohannon's minutes need to come down if he's not hitting shots, that's a given. Joe T should be the first guy to get those minutes though. He'll play better on offense when he's not forced to play with Fran's huge second unit of no shooters and no spacing.

Not sure the reasoning, but sophomore slumps have been a real thing for Hawkeyes under Fran. Don’t give up on Toussaint yet!

He's arguably been slightly better than last season too stats wise. He was playing better earlier in the year, but he just needs more time. Especially more time with the starters.

Plus it appears he steps on every wet spot on the floor.
the guy with the ball is what I envision for Toussaint

Instead, the defender falling is Toussaint, absent a basketball

This board is obsessed with turnovers.

Turnovers per 40 min - Sophomore seasons

Dean Oliver - 4.3
Pierre Pierce - 4.6
Joe T - 4.9

Oh and Mike Henderson was at 4.5 his senior year. Obviously you want Joe T to come down from 4.9 (he was at 4.5 last year), but the bottom line is playmakers have more turnovers. He's a difference maker on defense and opens up so much more for others on offense. He just needs more minutes and a longer leash when he makes mistakes so he can't get into a rhythm.

I feel confident in my assessment.

Ulis minutes against Rutgers were more steady than anything Toussaint has done in two years at the point.

JT can't stay under control and doesn't make good decisions.

I do agree his lack of PT is amplifying his lack of patience but I don't feel good about it sorting itself out this year.

Joe T has so much potential, as do a lot of players. Really it comes down to mental focus, staying in the moment of the game, and doing what is required of him instead of him forcing his agenda on the court. He would be an asset if he simply played solid, not spectacular on the offensive end, and continued to disrupt on D.

I haven't given up on him. I think he can be a productive player.

Im hoping he can get it together by next year. I don't know that he can play himself out of this turnover spiral this year when his instinct seems to be to force everything.

I will say that Rutgers game is the one I didn't get to watch as closely. Was traveling for work and had to watch at a bar with a co-worker. I might have to go back and watch that one, but it's hard to imagine it was a better showing than what Joe T has ever had.

Its not just turnovers, its also lack of finishing at the rim when he gets there.

If he would finish better it would help because he does create allot of steals and that does offset turnovers.

I still think he’s pressing a bit, most likely because he’s trying to earn more playing time. If he’s getting 30 minutes next year, I bet we see a different Joe.

Joe has had more spectacular moments for sure but Ulis is just more in control of what he's doing.

He had a couple really simple drive and kicks to shooters but those are the type of plays that Iowa doesn't get from anyone else.

You may be right, and my post wasn’t directed at any poster in particular. The board has just (and understandably) been pretty down on him lately

If you have some time and want to get excited about the future of Hawk hoops, the Rutgers game is definitely worth a watch
