Expect to see more of Tony Perkins & Ahron Ulis

Toussaint did fine with it most of last year...
Someone posted elsewhere we were 12-8 after JBo went down last year. Other variables in there I'm sure, but if that's true then I'm not sure just fine are the words I would use. More like meh.

That's what a coach, like Fran, is paid quite a bit of money to work out in game. Other coaches do it with their lineups.

It's impossible to know when a player may get hot. Jbo is such a great shooter you keep thinking he's going to take off. Sometimes he does sometimes he doesn't. I'm sure fran thinks the next one is going in, like a lot of us.

This board is obsessed with turnovers.

Turnovers per 40 min - Sophomore seasons

Dean Oliver - 4.3
Pierre Pierce - 4.6
Joe T - 4.9

Oh and Mike Henderson was at 4.5 his senior year. Obviously you want Joe T to come down from 4.9 (he was at 4.5 last year), but the bottom line is playmakers have more turnovers. He's a difference maker on defense and opens up so much more for others on offense. He just needs more minutes and a longer leash when he makes mistakes so he can't get into a rhythm.
Playing injured. Thus not higher mins.

When I meant Joe T was similar to BJ, I meant he was out of control as well. That is not false and it is very true.
It is patently false. BJ was always a cool customer with the ball. I was a student back then, undergrad and grad, and BJ was the real thing. Anyone could see that, especially starting with the Great Alaskan shootout. He took over some of those games. No careless handles, he understood the stop and go drive that Joe T has yet to master.

There is no comparison.

You are so freaking wrong. BJ frequently played way too fast and made many mistakes because of that. It’s not like I’m saying he was a bad player. He really stepped into his own his sophomore year. Why do you hate Joe T?

I don’t hate Joe T, I just fear for his safety every time he brings the ball up because I am not sure he will be able to stop before he hits the bleachers.

I bet if you go back to the Gonzaga game thread you’d find pretty much everyone on here begging for more joeT minutes.
It wasn’t long ago that senior Maryland PG Anthony Cowan called Toussaint the toughest player he had to guard in a Big Ten which included Cassius Winston and Zavier Simpson, and said that Joe and Rocket Watts of MSU would soon be taking over the league (Cowan admittedly might’ve been a bit overly optimistic for both)

Joe clearly has a lot of work to do in terms of learning how to play within the structure of an offense, as well as defend without committing dumb fouls, but I’m still confident that at some point it’s gonna click for him and he will be a terror at both ends of the court for other Big Ten teams

For defensive purposes ALONE where much of the back court that gets the bulk of the minutes lacks should allow for Joe T to get more minutes.. (Tony P & AU too) if he turns it over 6 times a game at least he can stay in front of his dam man on D and is quick enough to run out and contest a shot.. I’m sorry but most of you act like you can’t see the current back court crew that gets the bulk of the minutes not getting openly abused! Especially the last two games! Oh it happened against The Zags and Rutgers too... Lol.. scared of Joe T’s turnovers ???? 😂😂😂😂 But not scared of the other guards being completely locked down on D and not being able to guard their man!? Now That’s pretty dam hilarious..

It’s not an easy decision splitting minutes between these guards. Each one gives you something critical and none of them provide everything you need.

Connor — length, steady decision maker and play maker, mostly strong with the ball/slow AF
JBo — assassin when he’s on/slow AF and worthless on defense
Toussaint — fast AF, strong as a bull, can get to the rim against anyone in the nation at will/ inconsistent, TO making with trouble finishing.

Every team you face presents different matchup issues. It’s a conundrum. Still ... theres a dude that gets paid $3M a year to figure it out, and he has a lot of highly paid experts to help him do it.

So far they’ve been pretty ok. They see these guys many hours per week. We see them one or two. If Ulis was ready, we’d already be seeing more of him. Sounds like he’s getting there.

Let’s enjoy the process.

I think we will be ok if not a little better than that.

If this was the case, then why did BJ have doubts about his own abilities at Iowa and contemplated transferring to a smaller school after his freshman year? Pat Harry has referenced this multiple times on his show after an interview with BJ.

Probably because that’s the norm for the vast majority of freshman? The adjustment to college is often difficult.... and yet by his sophomore year he was on his way to a great career?

You must be thinking of someone else. Yes, he improved each of his 4 years (as most players do), but Armstrong always had about a 2/1 assist/turnover ratio including his freshman year. He rarely played fast and loose with the ball.

Marble, for all his greatness as a Hawkeye, could make mistakes by trying to do too much.

And the Big Ten was a freaking meat grinder last yr same as this yr.
It was good, but not nearly as good as this year. There was one top ten team, MSU, that we played one time.
Currently 3 of the top 8 teams in the country are from the big ten, with Illinois, Purdue, and Wisconsin also currently ranked.
Minnesota, Rutgers, NW, and MSU have also been ranked at some point. 10 of 14 teams have been ranked this year at one point, and that doesn't include Maryland (brutal big ten schedule 7 of 10 Big ten games against the current top 25 teams, others @Ind, Rutgers, @Minny) or Indiana(still projected to get into the tourney). That's pretty insane.

Last season, I thought JoeT did a pretty decent job filling in for the missing JBo. So much so, I thought he would take the next step and be a real factor for us this year. Unfortunately, he's playing more like Trey Dickerson going full speed ahead no matter what the circumstances and routinely dribbling into bad situations. He just needs to play more under control and use his quickness when the gameplay dictates it.

Having said all that, I think McCaffery should give him the start tonight. Maybe being in the game from the beginning will lessen his inclination to come in the game and immediately make things happen.

Joe T just needs to clean it a bit. I’m confident he can. He already plays solid defense, if he can be just an above average dude on offense, he’ll be a guy everyone here will come to appreciate. He’s a heck of a passer, just not the most intelligent.

This is more about BJ. He was never out of control. Did you even ever see him play?

We are talking about his sophomore year, for starters.

Well one variable would be that 18 of those 20 games were the regular season Big Ten conference schedule,... so 12-8 is "just fine"...

Perkins with 4 points/1 rebound and some good defense

Uhlis with 2 points, 1 assist, 1 rebound and also good defense.

Good job!
