Fargo Discussion

For Iowa U16, I am probably most impressed with Kyler Knaack. He has steamrolled the competition except for a 9-5 win over a two timer from Michigan. Going to be a tough out over the next 3 years.
Where does he go to school?
They may earn a spot. Not sure Cael let's anyone wrestle lol best man up. I know what you meant man gonna be tough getting in that line up for Eric . I have a feeling Mason will find away

He’s a Bosco kid. I don’t know what 3 years is in reference to as he will be a junior in the fall.

What was his competition like? This kid has been wrestling nationally since he could walk. Would be surprising if he suddenly took a big step forward. But not impossible.
It’s hard to say what his competition was like being that I have a hard enough time following 18 and unders let alone 16 and under.

I’ll attempt to clarify what impressed me about Kyler’s tournament. I can’t say that I’ve watched him a ton, but I’d say I’ve watched him a fair amount these past two years. Imo he’s always been a very good defensive wrestler. He keeps a strong base and he’s hard to score on. These past few days I’ve seen him hit some pretty explosive shots. He was lighting up the scoreboard and seemed far more aggressive. S Fargo is still a tournament that tests wrestlers, and I’d say he passed.

I also don’t know if I’d say it’s fair to be surprised about a wrestler his age taking a step forward in his progression. Colin Moore the former Ohio st 197 comes to mind as a comparison. He was a 23-24 yr old senior and finally got more confident with his offense and started scoring regularly his last year in school.

Winning a stop sign and mowing through the competition is nothing to poo poo at imo. Time will tell but he’s become a name that I’m going to follow a bit more closely based on his performance the past three days.

These are good thoughts. But would you say Collin Moores are common?

I reffed some of Braeden Scoles' matches this year. He was extremely smooth and looked almost bored. Illinois got a good one.

Also, how about that Hopke?? Nice to see him get some sweet revenge on Attao.

Of course the Mirasola's just may be the real deal.

Bummer that UW can't keep the good ones here in Wisconsin....

Far less common than a 16yr old making gains on a wrestling mat, but not unheard of. Nelson Brands’ tournament last March might just be another decent example. It’s amazing how much better a wrestler gets when they gain some confidence in their ability to finish without giving up a counter attack.

I think there should be some optimism in both Knaack’s and Brands’ upcoming seasons.

That was an impressive comeback by Hopke. After Attao hit that arm spin, I thought he would make quick work of Hopke. Hopke definitely unlocked something against Attao and started to score at will.

Illinois getting Scoles and Kannon Webster is a great recruiting class for Poeta.

Would have been nice to get Davino out of Illinois. Surprised he picked OSU with our need at 133 in the near future and their log jam . A few of them are going to have to grow to 141, and 149.

Maybe he pulled a Barry Davis the morning of weigh-ins but actually succeeded and made it to an all u can eat buffet or something.
1 of 2 things must have happened. Either it’s a error on flo’s part and he should be in the 220 bracket or teams are limited to a certain # of wrestlers per weight. 220 has 5 guys and HWT only had 3, Mickel being the 4th. I’m guessing the ladder.

I see Cody Merrill breezed through the field in his return to action, including a tech over Cole Mirasola in the final.

I can’t see that he has committed anywhere.
I believe the fact he hasn’t committed yet is largely due to him missing his junior season due to injury. He broke his clavicle and his hip in practice, and I believe Fargo was his first competition since then. He won CA state at 195 in 2022. He will certainly be a Hwt, but as good as he is he’s going to be limited by his height against big men. He’d have a really tough time with Heavies with builds like Mason Parris, Wyatt Hendrickson etc, but his skill set is pretty phenomenal.

Sounds like it would be in his best interests to stay at 197.

I always thought it would be cool if USA Wrestling would give out overall team trophies. Give trophies to the top 4 teams. Add the total scores of men's 16U/JR freestyle and greco. Add all 4 categories together and give trophies to the top 4 states. Although Iowa never won a team title in any of the 4 categories they would have won the overall team title.
1. Iowa 578
2 Illinois 573
3 PA 555
4 Oklahoma 390
5 California 360
6 Wisconsin 352
7 Ohio 349
8 Minnesota 285

You forgot to include the women's titles.
