Washburn was a bust but didn't play against Iowa in 1989. Probably thinking 1986.And Chris Corchiani. They both lit us up as I remember.
They also had Chris Washburn, one of the original big man busts.

Yep. 26 and his first season as a head coach (youngest in DI at the time). Who knew that 100 years later he’d still be chasing his first Sweet Sixteen?Didn't Fran coach Lehigh at the time? I swear he coached a team in the AHC, back when tickets were slightly harder to get
I think Iowa blew a big half time lead against UNLV.The 86-87 team started out 17-0 on the year. Lost 4 along the way to NCAA. Won first 3 in tourney and lost to Tarkanian's Vegas team by a few. I forget but think they finished something like 26/27 and 5.
Yup. And I destroyed my vcr and the tape.I think Iowa blew a big half time lead against UNLV.
Uh...... yahI think Iowa blew a big half time lead against UNLV.
I believe the University president meddled in that issue.Lost in 2nd round to NC St. Loss still pisses me off. Ray Thompson ruled ineligible right before start of NCAA tournament. Rodney Monroe went crazy.
I believe so...He was on some stupid kick where all freshmen athletes at Iowa would be unable to play, despite no one else in the NCAA having the same policy. If I remember correctly, Hayden Fry, Tom Davis, and other coaches threatened to leave. He didn't last much longer as president.I believe the University president meddled in that issue.
Hunter Rawlings?I believe so...He was on some stupid kick where all freshmen athletes at Iowa would be unable to play, despite no one else in the NCAA having the same policy. Yeah, I think that was his name.Hunter Rawlings?
58-42 halftime and we lost 82-80?I think Iowa blew a big half time lead against UNLV.
No, it's a pitIts hard to explain the absolute excitement of the late field house era. Not as many of us are around anymore.
The idea of creating Iowa's version of 'The Pit' has not worked in Carver.
I remember George being very contrite after that loss and apologizing to the fans.“After getting upset by Arkansas State, the Hawks were forced to play Lehigh in the consolation game of their home court tournament.”
Yep. Dominated the 1st half. Big difference in the game is we made 2-6 3 pointers and they made 11-30. Nobody shot the 3 like they did back then. We shot 55% and lost. Last time we were ever close to having the roster to win a championship.58-42 halftime and we lost 82-80?
In his tracksuit. 😂I remember George being very contrite after that loss and apologizing to the fans.
In carver30-5. Lost to fOSU after our one week ranking at #1.
Chris Washburn was long gone from NC St by ‘89. Was the 3rd pick in ‘86 draft (Behind Brad Daugherty and Len Bias). Might have already ate his way out of the NBA by then too.And Chris Corchiani. They both lit us up as I remember.
They also had Chris Washburn, one of the original big man busts.
Dennis Hopson right?In carver

My grandparents were the Hawkeye fans they kept showing all game. There was an Iowa game, I thought it was the Alaska Anchorage shootout, but I think I am wrong. I'm thinking 1986 or 1987. It's a Dr. Tom game. We played UC Irvine (I think the anteaters). They had a punk on their team, Scotty Brooks, who then became Scott Brooks, played in the NBA and coached Houston and OKC. He was jacking 3's from Caitlyn Clark range. We responded. It was an offensive orgy on both sides but we ultimately won in OT I believe. I want to say both teams went over a 100 in a college game or were close to it.
Have I stroked out? Does anyone remember?
That's awesome! My grandparents were the Hawkeye fans they kept showing all game.
It was in Irvine.
He was the Hawkeye fan in the Hawkeye flat cap that they kept showing going into most commercial breaks.
We taped it & remember showing them when they got back to Iowa. 😂

I believe he had 36, and they seemed to have a good little guard then as well.
Jay Burson…Ed Horton broke his neck the next yearI believe he had 36, and they seemed to have a good little guard then as well.
that loss is 2nd to me for a gut punch behind the 87 NCAA game I wont mention. I am too young to remember the Lute years. F#cking Rodney Monroe.Lost in 2nd round to NC St. Loss still pisses me off. Ray Thompson ruled ineligible right before start of NCAA tournament. Rodney Monroe went crazy.
Jay Burson…Ed Horton broke his neck the next year
Burson could shoot the rock. Smooth stroke.Put him in an Iron Halo
I remember David Robinson and Navy playing one year, I believe. It was a big deal when the started it, as were all the games.Does anyone remember the Amana Hawkeye Classic? I hope that I got the name correct.
Because, back in the day, it was the ONLY “Thanksgiving” BB tourney on the schedule! Most teams did not open their seasons until just before Thanksgiving Day and the Great Alaskan Shootout would seemingly give the nation an upset or two.Helluva tournament back in the day.
Wasn’t he only like 4 ft tall or something, too?Burson could shoot the rock. Smooth stroke.
Jay Burson
Gig at The Fan || Co-Host, Buckeye Warmup Hometown || New Concord, Ohio Jay Burson scored the second most points in Ohio High School basketball history. From 1981-85, he scored 2,958 points for John Glenn High School andwww.971thefan.com
With a flat top?Wasn’t he only like 4 ft tall or something, too?
Yes very tiny guy. Very slight. His bio says dude weighed 152 pounds. My guess is he was lighter than that. I bumped into Ed Horton once on my way to class. He was built haha. That was an awful game for Jay. It pretty much finished his career at osu and in the NBA.Wasn’t he only like 4 ft tall or something, too?
Pretty much? I don't think he ever played again.Yes very tiny guy. Very slight. His bio says dude weighed 152 pounds. My guess is he was lighter than that. He tried and did. Both the NBA and cba. Not long though.Pretty much? I don't think he ever played again.
The Iowa Television Network. It irked my out of state friends.I remember David Robinson and Navy playing one year, I believe. It was a big deal when the started it, as were all the games.
Also remember the Big Ten / ACC shootout games in CR for a couple years during that time.

And Sharm Scheuerman.Bob Hogue on the call
Ahhhhhhhh, but we watched some pretty awesome basketball then. A time when I looked forward to their games and effort they played with. Now…………….? Just not anywhere close to energy those teams played with. Sad really. You already rekindled a lot of old people's ptiabbsd😉😂
That crap was almost 30 years ago. We're f'ing old.
