Fellow Oldies Help Me Out--the Anteater Game?

You already rekindled a lot of old people's ptiabbsd😉😂

That crap was almost 30 years ago. We're f'ing old.
Ha! Kid stuff..Go back 50+ years for even better memories..1969-70, 14-0 hawk team that AVERAGED over 100 points a game in the Big 10 without the 3 point shot. I sat at our kitchen table with a transistor radio and kept a score sheet every game. Heartbroken with the 104-103 loss to Jacksonville in the Regional semi- finals. Fast forward 10 years to the final 4. Most likely a Nat. title has Ronnie Lester stayed healthy.

There was an Iowa game, I thought it was the Alaska Anchorage shootout, but I think I am wrong. I'm thinking 1986 or 1987. It's a Dr. Tom game. We played UC Irvine (I think the anteaters). They had a punk on their team, Scotty Brooks, who then became Scott Brooks, played in the NBA and coached Houston and OKC. He was jacking 3's from Caitlyn Clark range. We responded. It was an offensive orgy on both sides but we ultimately won in OT I believe. I want to say both teams went over a 100 in a college game or were close to it.

Have I stroked out? Does anyone remember?
I lived in The Belmont Heights area of Long Beach at that time. My parents came to visit and I took them to see that game in the Long Beach Arena. Nail biter. THEN to top it off I took them down to San Diego a few days later to watch the Hawks in another nail biter in the Holiday Bowl. Quite a couple of fun days and memories with my mom and dad.

Lucky you! Those were great days right?

I'm still trying to find that Irvine game on YouTube. Iowa fans would be wow'd by the never say die attitude by that team in that game.

I was actually talking to a ex Hawkeye basketball player from early 70's about that game last night. I told him that loss still bothers me. He said the same thing.

My earliest games were 75-76.

Iowa was decent 1975-76. Indiana beat Michigan in national championship. I believe only two teams from big ten went to tournament. Had a beer last night with a member of 75-76 team.

Ahhhhhhhh, but we watched some pretty awesome basketball then. A time when I looked forward to their games and effort they played with. Now…………….? Just not anywhere close to energy those teams played with. Sad really.

I remember Brian Kellerman from Idaho hitting a jumper to eliminate us in 79?

Or am I tripping, though I'm not trippin?

And next to The Catch that is as good of a bowl game we ever played.

I was there as well, great stuff.

I think his name was Knuckles and it was Toledo.
Idaho in 1982.😕
I remember the Idaho game. The subs did better but Lute kept putting the starters back in the game. Iowa had a player named Denard(?) that played an awesome game that day.

Yep. JC transfer. Basically a home game for Idaho.

I had seats in the old field house- partially obstructed - HA HA! Remember the noise of stomping feet on the bleacher seats which probably held 40-50% of the attendance, so it got loud. I was in school for Ralph Miller and the fab five, I think they were called. 4 starters averaged >17 ppg including Brown and Johnson (at 28ppg) plus a sub getting 10 ppg. The lost 4 of first 7 games and then got it going and won out until getting screwed by Jacksonville on a fluke rebound. They had consolation games in the regionals then and set the record for pts scored or such - 121 against ND. I think we scored 65 first half points against the Irish!
Just trying to let the newcomers (uh, those in the last 20 years HAHA) what it was like.

I can remember being at a card club in '87, and one of the guys put on the Iowa vs Iowa State game. I assumed the Hawks would boat race the clones, since I never kept track of Iowa State. Great game, with Armstrong, Marble and the guys playing, Lafester Rhodes, and Jeff Grayer, and them guys. I was in a room with all State fans, with us losing a close game, with both teams scoring over a hundred.
A couple of games earlier they played Arizona, with Sean Elliot, Steve Kerr. Those teams with 4 year players, were fun to watch, because you really got to know them. It was easy to have real rivalry games back then.

The clock operator at that clowns 🤡 game had an itchy finger when the Hawks had the ball and was in a coma when the clowns did.

It was a couples card club thing, where the ladies realized they lost our attention when the guys were alI huddled around the tv. I was trying really hard to be polite. Kept thinking we'd pull it out.

We scored 75 points in the first half against AA Austin Carr and ND that game

That 69-70 Iowa team was loaded, had a real shot of a title. Oddly, it was Drake that went to the Final Four once in that era! But in the end, everybody lost to UCLA back then anyway, when it comes right down to it

Iowa had to add a special scoreboard that went over 100 in 69-70, since they broke that mark routinely. What a team
