Ferentz - This is your shot

Let's be honest folks, what Prime stated is fact; this is a completely different era in football. If you think any team Evy ever fielded would be remotely competitive is ridiculous.

Lots of good points made above. Seems like maybe Fry had a bit more overall consistency (mainly in the 80's - probably the best decade in program history?) but KF's best years have been a little better than Fry's, so it may be a wash.

If KF wins this Rose Bowl, it's really hard not to argue that he's #1 in Iowa history IMO. He'd have two "BCS" bowl wins, something that hadn't been done at Iowa since the 1950's if I'm not mistaken.

I know we were all pretty ticked about how 2010-14 went, but KF's body of work is still excellent when you look at his accomplishments over the past 16 years.

That's not to take anything from Fry - the guy pulled the program out of a gutter it had been in for 20 years and made them relevant and I have to give him some serious kudos for that. That was no small achievement.

So yeah, I think a heck of a lot of both coaches. They both deserve statues in front of Kinnick.

fry created the brand we all love today, broke the big 2 little 8 strangle hold and had that charisma we all remember, not to mention is one heck of an amazing human being (need to read his book: a high porch picnic). for that he gets special consideration from me. also, fry's teams played all (ok most of) the conf teams every year. This year, which was incredible, we missed out on 2 of the big boys. the third we lost to. would we have beat UM and OSU? maybe, but we'll never know for sure.

for me, its still fry, but kirk definitely made up for the last 4 or 5 years with this season and showed he's still the man for the current job and one hell of a coach.

It is all subjective. Kirk and Hayden both became dean of the big ten. Hayden was a badass, some people like that. Kirk is a diplomat, some people like that. Some people luv those top 10 rankings (Kirk has more). Some people want consistency (Hayden had more ranked teams). Some people like breaking the color barrier and resurrecting multiple programs. Some people like that Kirk has made the program a family business. Some luv 3 conference titles. Some luv B1G COTY 4 times. Some luv the Mich/IA game won by Houghtlin. Some luv the Tate/Holloway miracle pass. Kirk and Stoops (2 Hayden disciples) are currently national deans of college football with maximum tenure. In the end there is no scientific method in this debate.

The main thing is we have had 2 coaches since 1979 which makes us all very lucky.
Hayden made that happen cuz Hayden made Kirk one of his coaches. No Hayden means no Kirk. They parallel each other which is no surprise. Both won multiple conference titles. Both had Heisman runner-ups. Both produced a ton of All-Americans. Hayden made Iowa relevant and Kirk kept it that way. I'll always look at Hayden as the teacher and Kirk as the student. But Kirk's best student. Unless ya wanna get into a Stoops debate ;)

On the other side of the coin...I wonder how many games were lost by KF in absolutely hideous ways...because of poor game time coaching and awareness and a lack of preparation...compared with some of the other all time coaching greats?

As painful as the MSU loss was...Iowa was prepared, played their hearts out and weren't hoodwinked...those give away losses have been the most painful, and a signature of some KF teams of the past.

Though I match Kirk in age I cut my teeth as a Hawk fan under Fry entering college his first season and leaving and yes it took awhile the year he took us to the Rose Bowl beating none other than Michigan State in the snow at KInnick. He brought the program back from the dead after all those seasons as a Big Ten bottom feeder.

I agree that this season Kirk blew his shot Saturday night at becoming a legend against the same Michigan State team in essentially the quarter-finals of the national championship. We got a nice consolation prize in the Rose which remains the premier destination for teams in this conference not making the play-off.

Kirk and Hayden have both had a significant impact on Iowa football achieving different things in two different eras. History I think will judge Kirk as the best developmental coach of his time which IMO will rate above his actual coaching achievements. History I think will also remember his ultra-conservative coaching philosophy which IMO came back to bite him the other night and may keep him from ever winning the "big game." Kirk has a complicated legacy and also deserves great credit for bringing the program back a couple times now and laying the foundation for future success.
