Filip Rebraca & Payton Sandfort Appreciation Thread

Tell Jon Rothstein a few of us pointed out Payton Sandfort a long time ago. In fact, I have to admit I suggested starting him back in January, or at least getting him significant playing time. Kris Murray, Tony Perkins, PMac, and Sandfort will make a pretty strong nucleus for next year's Hawkeyes.

I predicted a double-double for Rebraca today and he came up just short by scoring 10 pts and hauling in 9 rebs. He will continue to improve. Could be a big key in the NCAA tourney.

Payton said the Illinois game on Sunday got him going (he was 3-3 from the field) & that playing in a game like that was huge for him

Payton says we have a good shot vs Rutgers; he hopes the shots fall this time around

Payton said JBo immediately took him aside and has taught him a lot since the 1st day he arrived at Iowa

He says going against Keegan in practice makes it easier in actual games

His dad and grandpa have told him to keep shooting.

Great interview!!!!

Bobby Hanson said, "Great kid and he's only going to get better."

Hopefully brother will follow him.

I think id take Rebraca right now for this team over (gasp) Nunge. Watching that Xavier game and Nunge looked slower than molasses. Hes obviously a better scorer, but Filip moves so well on the perimeter and contests more shots.

Let’s not get too crazy here. Jack rebounds and shoots better than Filip. Contests more shots? Jack has more than twice as many blocked shots. Rebracca has progressed through the season but Jack simply due to his length and shooting ability brings more to the table. Not meant to be a knock on Filip, he plays tough!

imagine where we'd be with Jack also on this team

P Money is the truth. There won’t be a major drop off next year because of players like him and Tony P.

Filip is certainly much more athletic than Jack. Jack's size would have helped in some Big Ten games.

Said it when Payton committed, said it before the season, saying it again. P Money's game reminds me a bunch of Kyle Korver. His shot is lightning quick. Can get it off in a phonebooth (for the old-timers that know what that is). And he moves w/o the ball very well. He's got great size for a wing and solid handles and is a smart ball player. Future is very bright... perhaps our next brotherly duo at Iowa?

Your pry right but im kinda over the plodding ground bound center. I think it limits our ceiling defensively. Their is a lot going on beyond stats as well.

As I said somewhere a couple weeks ago, looking at next year's roster I don't see a scenario where Payton's not getting around 20 or more minutes almost every competitive game. There is no real scenario where he's not getting every minute Patrick and Kris spend on the bench.

Confident he will be a double-digit scorer with a high number of assists per minute.

Filip plays his ass off.

Payton's confidence is starting to soar.

Filip:

10 points (5-5 shooting)
9 rebounds (3 offensive)
4 assists
2 blocks

Payton:

3-5 (60%) from 3
2-4 (50%) from 2 point range

13 points
2 rebounds
Don’t know if the quick turn around for NW left them with some tired legs but Iowa was on a mission today. It was 0’s most active and by far his best game in a Hawkeye uniform. The Hawks will need similar play from here on out.

There have been signs this year 20 can be a special player. Hopefully he can make these kinds of contributions regularly from now on.

I would mention Sandfort has a decent left hand. Iowa's past shooters like Haluska, Gatens, Weezy could only go to their right and finish with right hand.

I also like the FT percentage....the great shooters like Gatens/Jok/JBO are have the attention to detail/concentration/mental toughness to make Free throws and make close to 90%.

Last he is adequate athlete for his size/willing defender. Doesn't matter if you are lock down shooter if you are too slow to defend. Even if he is not a kyle Korver, he might be at level of a duncan robinson in NBA.

PS not getting minutes this year was confusing. He has an all around game and huge IQ; reminds me a little of Gatens.
There have been some games in Big Ten play where it seemed like the moment was a little too big for him or he just wasn’t comfortable playing his game

Sounds like Sandfort himself brought it up, but the performance he had in an extremely tough environment in Champaign is going to do wonders for him. I think the trajectory is straight up from here on out for Payton
