Fire Fran if You Expect More

I'm so tired of the "it could be way worse" Fran defenders. If you think Fran is going to get us to sweet 16 or later, whatever. I disagree but that's fine. The "but, but, but lickliter" bs is so dumb.

I really like Fran, his yelling doesn't bother me, I like his kids for what they are. I want sweet 16s. I don't think Fran is going to make it happen after he didn't do it with garza, Kris or Keegan. I don't want Barta to pick his replacement.

I agree 100% with every word of this. My thoughts exactly.

I've always liked Fran, but I believe he's taken us as far as he's going to. He's had 13 years. I want more postseason success, and I am not afraid at all of the potential downside if the next coach may not be "the guy".

I've been watching Iowa lose 1st or 2nd Round tournament games for basically the last 35 years. More of the same doesn't move the needle for me anymore.

Even a former Cyclone coach can get to the Sweet 16 at Creighton. But it’s too hard so Fran should get a pass.

So we should just be afraid and settle for 0 Sweet 16s and middle of the road team’s forever? That’s LOSER mentality!
It really isn’t. It’s more of a “be careful what you wish for” mentality. We have some built in disadvantages in our location and probably a few other areas too.

There's no guarantee that the next coach is a downgrade.

Are we scared of moving on from a coach that's won 2 NCAA games in the past 7 years?
It’s a “be careful what you wish for” attitude. I think it’s harder to recruit and build a program at Iowa. Maybe the portal will actually help.

I would rather suck, daring to be great, than be mediocre and being afraid to fail
I don’t think you would. Fran was facing a huge hole to fill following Lick. I’m disappointed that we don’t advance in the tournament but Iowa teams are fun to watch. We’ve had four 1st team all Big in a row and a player of the year. I get it about the tournament but it was awesome winning the big ten tournament last year. This is the first year in awhile to not get 20 wins or more. This team got much better over the season. I wasn’t sure we’d win three big ten games before Christmas and came within a eyelash of being the #2 seed in the big ten tournament. Does that count for anything?

This team got much better over the season? interesting

came within an eyelash of something something and lost at home to a terrible team, does that count for anything?

Fran should get a lifetime contract, want to make sure you are comfortable, you know the whole careful what you wish for thing. sad

But it’s the pattern and inability to change that frustrates everyone. No defense, funny rotations, not knowing when to call timeout, and for some, the ongoing sideshow with the refs. And then you through in the minutes his kids got. Some games they deserved them, many others, especially Pat, did not. He’s had short leashes for others. We can’t seem to get the high level of guard play we need to take another step. We have a giant body of worn that tells us, this is all we are ever going to be under Fran. If you know you will never make a run in the tournament, then what’s the point.

more of a challenge next season to have one of the sons on the floor like the past 3 seasons

Sure, there are no guarantees. The next guy COULD be worse, as we're well aware. But as I said, as a fan, I simply am not afraid of the downside anymore. I'd rather at least see them roll the dice and try. If it doesn't work out with the next guy, so be it. As bad as things were with Lickliter, Fran got things back on track in just a few years after Lick was shown the door. It's not the end of the world.

I'm not a huge fan of the revolving door, either, but Fran has been here 13 years, which is a long time to stay in one place IMO unless you're really winning at a high level, which Fran is not. He's won 4 NCAA games in 13 years. 2 in the last 7. It's my belief is that he's taken us as far as he's going to, and the status quo is making me slowly but surely lose interest.

This is all moot point, though, because we all know Barta isn't making any changes. I think he'd prefer to just throw a contract extension at Fran and then go grab his golf clubs.

Spot on, and I have the exact same frustration with Kirk Ferentz, Brian and the offense on the football side. I'd have a lot more patience with it all if I felt they were making their best effort to try to correct it. Instead, it leaves me feeling that there's no hope of meaningful improvement.

Also, look at how fast they turned things around in Ames after a rock bottom season. It’s easier to turn a program around with the transfer portal if you are willing to change and take chances.
