First day of PTL?

I think the shooting ability of our bigs allows for some interesting ideas. Nunge could play the 3 in our offense but the 4 on defense. We could try having Ahmad play the 3 on defense and 4/5 on offense. I remember when we put Ahmad on Tony Carr, he did a pretty good job and I'm confident that he would guard 3's well. We'd have at least 3 shooters out there, maybe 4 if Tyler's shot develops well or we sub in another shooter.

Just throwing an idea out there. It's going to take a while before all the rotation questions are answered.

you mean there is a difference in whom one guards on defense then who guards you on offense? ;)....you make an excellent reminder. Nunge can play so-called 3 on offense who can defend 4/5 on defense. He has a Uthoff type game on offense with maybe even better handles. Giddy.

Nunge plays outside-in like Uthoff. Great shooter, but we'll see if as good as JU. Think Nunge could become a better rebounder, but we'll see about the shotblocking. Handle might be better. Could be because Nunge seems stronger. Notice Nunge quoted Fran saying he should stay under 230lbs to maintain quickness. Uthoff never sniffed 230lbs. With Nunge's frame, he could get to that weight if he wanted.

agree...and he is a true freshman. Giddy Giddy.
I like all of the Fran-Fit Players we have equally. But this one can be a real difference maker IMO as he gains experience...smart players learn quick.

Oh My Gosh...adding JWieskamp next year...oh my :).

Like Garza and the rest of the young Hawks, Nunge's defense will be the key.... I really like this team. But I fear defense will again be the Achilles heal of this team.

Do we, collectively, think Connor Mac could really b the back-up PG piece that we are missing?

I suppose it is a moot point, since he is red-shirting in favor of baseball, but what if JBo gets hurt? Does the redshirt come off? I suspect it will.

We won't be the youngest P5 team anymore and we add two quality bigs. Defense will be better, not stellar, but significantly better. With our offense, that could be a huge difference.

Maybe, but with the extra length added this year, and more experience for Cook, Pemsyl, and Kreiner we should be better at defending the paint, and that would be a big plus.

I'm more concerned about post D. That's the thing the team has the biggest opportunity to improve and must do so.

The biggest problem with the D last year was the help defense. It was virtually non-existent at times. It's not as noticeable when a wing gets beaten and their guy runs into Woody (or Hansen/Reiner/etc years ago). When a wing gets beaten and their guy gets to a Fr big who hesitates to react, the other teams will score at will.

I have no doubt that not only will the help defense improve, but the defensive rotations that follow will be far better this year. The bulk of the team is returning this year (as compared to last year) and the staff isn't having to start at the ground level with everyone. They can build on the basics from last year.

Agree 100% and will add that not only was help defensive often late, but guys were often in-between helping and staying on their guy. Classic inexperience.

Yep, my sons team had the same problem in HS. Returned one starter, who was a SO, and had to break in a bunch of Fr and So into the rotation. Offense wasn't bad, and really good at times. The defense was better at the end of the year and still not very good.

Playing team good team defense is easier when most of the team has already been playing it. You get the rotations, you know if you leave your guy, someone else will pick him up (and who that will be). You step into a new situation, you don't know that and don't trust it. Now, multiply that by half a team...

Really excited to see the 2017-18 Hawks take the court this year, it should be an exciting season.

At least stop being the freakin spelling nazi's. Sorry I slipped an extra letter in there by mistake. Should I really spend the next weeks scanning all your posts for a spelling or grammatical error? Christ GET A LIFE!

If this reply is any indication of your grammatical prowess, I think Obviously Oblivious would welcome those efforts on your part.

Honestly my primary beef is with TheSleepingDog who consistently misspelled Pemsl all season long despite my numerous admonishments. I trust you won't be that guy from here on out. I'm not normally a stickler for spelling but we really should try to get our favorite athletes names correct the majority of the time.

I think it was Jordy in an interview said that they were spending a lot more time on defense this summer so I would expect Fran will have them working together better this fall.

JB's about the only player Fran will have trouble sitting because his D's not stellar, so glad he said this.
