Anyone try it this weekend?

I am waiting a month or two until the lines die down.

Posted this in another thread too. The wife (pic in another thread) ordered a kit of 8 Portillo's Italian beef sandwiches that arrived over the weekend. Pure deliciousness!

I love how Iowans think that getting chain restaurants is some sort of status symbol

We do?

But the phenomenon I think you're referring to is not exclusive to Iowa. Our FSU friends had the same discussions on Warchant for years, just like HROT.

Yes, you do. Im not a Warchanter. Lived in Iowa for 22 years.

I don't think anyone thinks that.

This particular restaurant, however, has been confined to ONLY the Chicagoland area for decades and is only now expanding into new markets, so it's kind of a big deal.

I agree. I would be DAMN excited if one made it to Kansas City. We're not talking about Applebee's or Chili's here.

Every portillos I've been through has always been as busy during lunch and dinner times as they are now

Whatever you like. Italian beef is pretty good. Just get it dry and dip it yourself though.

This. They serve the beef on a nice crusty bread so when you dip it, it holds together nicely. The gravy is awesome. @torbee , while I would generally agree with you about hot dogs, a Chicago dog is in a different category.

Nothing in this is true.

A. Iowans love their chain restaurants. Look at every new subdivision being built and it loaded with chains. Do I need to remind you about the Fuddruckers and Krispy Kreme in Davenport on 53rd? Loaded with chains. B. Portillos is not only in the Chicagoland area. They are in Florida, Arizona, California, Indiana, etc...

It's actually open now ya dummy, and I was looking for a first-person review.

I don't believe in resurrecting old threads like some of you nerds.

You work for a newspaper and cannot edit a message board post? Got it.

We were there yesterday for the first time. It was dinner time and busy but moved quickly.

I got the dry Italian beef, onion rings and chocolate shake. Mrs QC got the beef croissant. Kids got chicken tenders and fries.

The good, my sandwich was great. Onion rings were just okay but the shake was perfect. Service was awesome.

The bad, chicken tenders were smaller than they told us they would be. Fries were meh. The croissant turned to mush very quickly.

Overall I’d give it 7.8 out if 10. I’m sure we’ll go back it just didn’t blow me away.

I think there is a difference between loving chains and considering them a status symbol.

But that doesn't make chain restaurants a status symbol.

Chains are for visitors and fast food. I think sit down chains have taken a big hit the past few years.

We never go to chains. I would rather risk it and have a bad meal vs going into a chain.

I love Barn Town Brewery in Waukee. The beer and food are excellent. By far the best food I have had at a brewery in Iowa. Menu is outstanding.

On the other end in Des Moines is Norwood Inn. Looks dumpy but they have some good bar food. They make some sort of giant Italian sausage sandwich that is just awesome.

You didn't live in Iowa for 22 years if you didn't think people would question an inaccurate dig at the state.

It's accurate. You and wendy getting all sensitive about it shows it.

Comparision: Shake Shack just opened a couple locations in San Diego (where i currently reside). I literally saw 0 people post about it on my social media accounts. Do you know how many Quad Citians posted about the new Portillos and Costco in Davenport? ALOT. Torbee has started multiple threads about it.

Maybe you have no CA friends?

Portillo’s is kind of a go-to on the road for me if there are no visible local joints. They have been consistent across multiple locales The eye-talian beef is good as well as the dawgs. Good stuff.
