I get it. Rules are rules. Anarchy if not followed. Is there a reasonable middle ground? In an age where most casinos tempt and beckon from back-pocket phones, if the perps haven’t bet on sports/games they’re involved with, how about a fine equal to total amounts wagered plus no-mercy probation, where next offense is scholarship loss or expulsion? Lesson, punishment, and deterrent delivered. Sorry, I’m not buying NCAA self-righteousness that they’re interested in keeping young adults from losing kneecaps to bookies. Or their hand-wringing concern for the “integrity” of sporting events that are being “legally” gambled on (that’s precious). You have to look holier-than-thou when you’ve grown far too powerful and wealthy on the backs of barely-compensated young athletes (not all have scholarships) who filled cash-cow football stadiums, and your fat salaries and bonuses for decades.
