We have recently been instructed to remove all threads that are strictly Copy & Pasted without properly being posted as a link.

If you could please do a link only to the desired article or writing, that would be the best way to get your thread to remain on the board.

Thanks.

Kwik, If I quote one paragraph out of an article and provide the link is that acceptable? That has been my normal approach in discussions.

Absolutely. It’s the full articles that are strictly copy & pasted without any link that we would be talking about.

Also, as to post only the link, not still copy and paste the full article.

Post only a link.

@binsfeldcyhawk2 where did your @cigaretteman post go. It was just here. They tried to blame it on Rivals back then too. I posted in the other thread

They tried this with @cigaretteman too a few years back. My guess is that's really the root cause. They're going to make ciggy crop his posts. Very Trumpish of them. They don't want you to have to read it here. They want you to click a link (which you won't do). Interesting.

I think we need some context here. How many sentences/paragraphs are acceptable until a link needs to be provided? Are we able to copy/paste the whole story IF we link a URL to all text in the post? This kind of request seems pretty loose with the rules (like last time). Does it only apply to a certain political party? Looking for any clarification

Instructed by whom? That is not legally enforceable. Unless you are claiming it as your own content. Books, newspaper articles, speeches, movies, musical lyrics are quoted every day.

I copy and paste a twitter link and the pic just comes up as a clickable link image. But, if this ends my 2 years of doing this, I’m ready to quit.

I see someone from Rivals is already handling you. Once a great day tarnished

PROCEDURAL POSTURE: Defendant electronic bulletin board moved for summary judgment in plantiff newpapers' suit alleging defendant's unauthorized copying and posting of plaintiffs' news articles on defendant's site constituted copyright infringement. Plaintiffs filed a cross-motion for partial summary judgment, arguing defendant could not invoke fair use as a defense.

OVERVIEW: Entire text of articles published on plaintiff newspapers' websites were posted on defendants' website so members could add commentary. Plaintiffs sued, alleging unauthorized article copying and posting on defendants' website constituted copyright infringement. Defendants moved for summary judgment, asserting the fair use doctrine. After balancing the fair use factors, plaintiffs' cross-motion for summary judgment was granted. Plaintiffs demonstrated their attempts to exploit the market for viewing their articles online, for selling copies of archived articles, and for licensing others to display or sell the articles; the availability of verbatim copies on defendants' website potentially interfered with these markets. Because the copying was verbatim, encompassed large numbers of articles, and occurred on an almost daily basis, evidence supported finding that defendants engaged in extensive, systematic copying of plaintiffs' works. Although the character of defendants' website was non-commercial, they did not demonstrate that verbatim copying of plaintiffs' articles was necessary to achieve their critical purpose.

OUTCOME: Defendants failed to demonstrate that it was necessary to copy, verbatim, plaintiffs' articles to enable website users to criticize the manner in which the media covered current events. Verbatim posting of plaintiffs' articles was more than was necessary to further defendants' critical purpose.

FreeRepublic lost, posters can only post about two paragraphs and a link, so as not to ‘steal’ clicks from the publishers for their content.

Let us know if you get it overturned, the posters would rejoice.
