Fran Twitter rumor: Arkansas

If you’re the CEO at Google or a leader within Google... you don’t get 9 years to prove yourself. Fran has been paid handsomely by the U of I over 9 years. I’ll assume you’re okay with mediocrity.

There is a vast difference between college sports and the business world, for a host of reasons. Let's just save ourselves a pointless argument and agree to disagree.

I'm not okay with permanent mediocrity. If next season is more of the same—another late-season fade, 20-ish wins and a Round of 32 appearance (or worse)–I'll agree that it's time to move on. But I'm not there yet. And I still prefer where we are to where we used to be.

Iowa isn't Google. Google would Duke, Kansas, NC, Kentucky.

Please let us know which ones Dr Tom groomed. I’ve got to hear this.

BJ Armstrong (SO)
Ed Horton (SO)
Roy Marble (SO)
Brad Lohaus (SR)
Les Jepsen (FR)
Kevin Gamble (SR)
Bill Jones (JR)

I don't know if 'groomed' is the right term as it relates to Kevin Gamble. Rather, the good Dr. recognized a talent that saw little playing time under Raveling, put him on the floor, resulting in KG being a key contributor to one of the best seasons in Iowa basketball history, not to mention a decent NBA career.

Posted on Nevada Sports net by Chris Murray:

"Arkansas fired head coach Mike Anderson last month after eight seasons on the job. Anderson posted a 169-102 record and 78-64 SEC mark. Anderson reached the NCAA Tournament in three of the last five seasons, including two appearances in the second round. Arkansas also had two NIT berths in Anderson's tenure, including this season when the team went 18-16 overall and 8-10 in the SEC."

Who does this sound like?

Most places that get you canned. Iowa you get extensions!!

I seem to recall that Raveling had Lohaus at the end of the bench and also had Michael Reaves ahead of BJ. Who knows what would have happened if Raveling stayed, but I bet both of those players would say that Dr Tom was a main factor for them making it to the NBA

Why in the world would Arkansas want anything to do with Alford? He's a solid candidate for a non-P5 program (he actually acquitted himself fairly well in ABQ), but he couldn't come close to taking either Iowa or UCLA to the promised land.

Ark going from Mike Anderson to Alford is kind of similar to Iowa going from Dr. Tom to Alford. In terms of coaching style that is.

Reaves avg 4.3 mpg to BJ’s 8 mpg in the only season both played for GR. BJ played in 29 games and started 3 games compared to Reaves’ 24 games and zero starts. Maybe you’re thinking of SR Banks playing ahead of BJ, but it most certainly wasn’t Michael Reaves.

Lohaus avg 22.4 mpg his Soph season and started 8 games, so I don’t know how far down the end of the bench he was there. Lohaus’ JR season he was one of six players to play in every game and his numbers were fairly poor compared to the rest of the team which probably contributed to his 13 mpg. Iowa also had several other talented bigs, so it wasn’t like scrubs were getting PT ahead of him. Even the guys who never made the NBA on that roster were damn good.

All while spying on you, tracking EVERYTHING you do, and then selling that information. Google is scum of the Earth in my book.

Google isn't the only one monetizing your personal data. Pretty much everyone is doing it, so they can target you with ads. Some of the crap that's being used to track users is terrifying, like this: https://www.wired.com/2017/05/hundreds-apps-can-listen-beacons-cant-hear/

Makes me want to move to rural Canada and live completely off the grid. But then how would I go online and argue about Hawkeye sports? :D

I just hope somebody hires Alford so we don't have to listen to him as a commentator on CBS or some other network.

Show me the evidence that he can't recruit high major talent; Joe W was a 4 * recruit who stayed home, and he was in the mix with Carton until the last minute. Garza was a 4* recruit as was Cook. Joe T just clicked over to a 4* if I'm not mistaken. He's also got Xavier Foster, a 5*, taking tons of visits. In my opinion (which maybe doesn't mean a whole lot), that is the definition of high major talent.

Garza and Weiskamp will be good solid players. I like both in terms of their effort and coach ability. Along with Cook, they could dominate at the mid major level. Garza is similar in ability to Seth Tuttle who became MVC player of the year in his senior year. Are they high major talent, the kind of players who can take over a game, we’ll have to wait and see. As for Tousaint, I just hope his is a better fit than Dickerson. Foster isn’t in the fold yet.

I can't tell if this is for real or not?

Wieskamp is on his way to becoming a 1st Team All-Big Ten by time he leaves Iowa and Garza has already "dominated" - at least offensively - a number of times again high-major teams as a Sophomore. He has certain obstacles (mainly athletic ability) that might prevent him from being an all-american type player and a good defensive player but he he also is realistically a potential 1st or 2nd team All-Big Ten Player by the time he leaves. They should be the focus of the offense and the 1-2 punch going forward.

In all fairness, I believe Dr. TOM groomed some of these guys into NBA talent. Many of the posters on here act like Dr. Tom just rolled the ball on the floor and reaped the rewards of George's recruiting. Give Dr. Tom credit where it is due. He implemented a style that allowed these guys to reach their potential, something George could not do.
Maybe true for the less talented players, but his lack of discipline really hurt Roy Marble, Ed Horton, and Ray Thompson. His off court coaching could have been a lot better.

Amen to that!
None of this should be legal, they should all go to prison in my book. But there is a lot of money to be had, and we know in today's America, money trumps law and morality.

I'm ok with Fran leaving for these reasons:

-Poor strategic mind on defense, not directing players late in games. Iowa giving Nebraska endless 3s, his players weren't ready to to call TO immediately after the Tennessee rebound with 2 seconds left.
-Giving Dailey minutes even though he had more turnovers than points
-Not recruiting a single true PG while we had Baer.
-Not improving Cook's weak free throw and mid-range shooting.

Let’s just throw out Fran and Dr. Tom’s 1st 2 years. 7 year stretch Dr Tom was under .500 in conference play with 4 NCAA wins. Fran over .500 with 3 NCAA wins. If Fran can go to 1 sweet 16 in the next 3 years he could match his NCAA not to mention much better in conference.

Fair enough, if Fran gets to Sweet 16

I’d like it if Fran left. He’s just not a likeable guy. And I’d say that if Iowa was in the Final Four.

Fran seems extremely likable, very engaging off the court, articulate, etc. Beyond that, he stopped the steady stream of transfers that plagued us under Alford and especially Lickliter, which speaks to his likability from the players.

Certainly a flip switches when he is on the sidelines and his likability drops like a rock if you happen to be a ref or opposing fan, but generally speaking, Fran's likability is far from the top of my complaints or concerns.

Most fans will never put Fron on the same level as KF but if he makes the sweet 16 I will. If he makes the elite 8 certainly, a final 4 and he has surpassed him.

I think the (phony) Christian image that he likes to project would fit in well with the similar southern crowd. He can sure talk the talk but he doesn’t walk the walk.

If Coach McCaffery were to decide to leave, I would beg Barta to appoint a competent search committee, or recruiting serve, and recuse himself until the proper coach was selected and accepted.

That said, I'm not necessarily in favor of changing coaches again. I just wish this staff could figure out a way to avoid all of those soul sucking collapses down the stretch. We had some legitimate chances to have extremely memorable seasons if it hadn't been for those.

Reaves was going to be the starter until he got hurt. Once he was hurt, BJ had the starting job and never let go of it.
