Fran's coaching reputation

Yep, 2015 was a LONG time ago.

And the ONLY Coach... ONLY one to do it from three 1 bid leagues.
That's what I think is remarkable. At Siena he won the regular season and then his teams went on to win the tournament, which as you say was the only way to get into the NCAA's. Think they did it three or so times at Siena, winning both titles. . I do get to wondering what's the sense of a tournament in a one bid league, though.

Unbalanced schedules and or maybe you had injuries you now have another chance in tourney setting.

Oh and money

I'm not sure Izzo, Crean, Belein, Matta would be as successful at Iowa as Fran has been. It takes a different skill set to do well at a school like Iowa.

I am still a little jealous of hoiberg's success at ISU. I think fran has done well, but he didn't recruit very well at times. Lot of offers were head scratchers.

Yeah, but he's definitely turned that around. 2016: Cook, Bohannon, Pemsl; 2017: Garza and Nunge (McCaffery, but it's his son so); 2018: Wieskamp (and all other offers for 2018 and 2019 are for really, really high-end, elite players). Last year's recruiting class was good, too, impressive because of the depth. Moss seems like the guy who's going to wind up being the star of that group. The thing is, though, that 2015 recruiting class was a step up over the prior year and 2016 already looks like another big step up and the 2017 class looks like it may be at least on par with this year's class. Wieskamp alone makes 2018's class look good. Fran's progressing and improving significantly as a recruiter and, importantly, getting his type of guys coming in with better and better athleticism and overall skill than early in his tenure. I agree with a lot of other posters on this site: Fran's best days are ahead of him -- and therefore our best days. It's been a long, long time since I really, really, REALLY liked an Iowa basketball coach and Fran is it. The recruiting from 2015-2018 looks like the best group of classes since Raveling's in the mid-1980s.

All I know is I'm glad we have him. He's not the best but he's better than average. I'm positive about the future. If these freshmen keep developing our best days are ahead of us.

Decent guy, probably above average recruiter, average at best developing players and only average at best in game coach. Watch the last 4 minutes of Iowa games and you will see why Fran will never be a great coach. He cannot coach the end of the game

He is actually an excellent end of game coach. Check his record. He wins way more than he loses. Normally expanding his lead in the last few minutes.

I am probably biased but there is not a B1G coach who I would trade Fran for. I really like him and what he is doing and how he does it.

Yes.
That epic collapse last year - the most epic collapse in the history of sport - after reaching #3 was marvelous and I definitely want the chance of that happening to stay!

What's with a "school like Iowa"? BB is a lot different than FB. There should be no excuses for a "school like Iowa". Numbers aren't critical like FB, weather is not a factor like FB. Lute took over a dumpster fire and built teams that made the final four and won a Big 10 championship. Fran has done a decent job but I don't think his staff is as strong as Lute's or Dr. Tom's both in recruiting or player development.

My take on Fran is he is a good coach when his team is ahead. But when we are behind he refuses to call time outs to design a play or refocus which leads to us losing close games.

Will Fran's national reputation be enhanced if this team turns it on and starts a roll?

I don't claim to know basketball like many of you but it feels like Fran is doing his best coaching job this year.

Thoughts?
Of course it would.
