Fuck college basketball

No accountability and difficult working conditions. Does not attract the best and brightest to officiating ranks. they suffer a lot of verbal abuse and are always hated by half of the crowd. would you want to do it?

Iowa gave up 48 points in the 1st half.

College basketball officiating has been bad but Iowa can't play that shitty in the 1st half then try to play out of their ass in the 2nd.
Agreed. It was always going to be an uphill battle but the refs changed it from a 7 incline to a 10 on the treadmill. It’s quite honestly a bunch of bullshit. The blantsnt charge and missed travel ruined a lot of big mo.

I understand.

I've stopped watching a lot of games because of bad officiating. I followed today's game online.

Every time Hawks had momentum the refs stepped in and said nope not today. Would I want to be a ref? What the hell does that matter? Just be consistent. They could body and hand check and Iowa could not breath on them without a call. Did the refs loose the game for Iowa? Hmmmmm probably shouldn't get down by 25 but come on.

Well Dave Witvoet proved you can be a donor and still officiate games of those teams. So why not...

The NBA, while not perfect by a long shot, at least understands that their game depends on professional officials that are held to account.

Pay your $50 and take the tests if you think it’s so easy. It starts by having junior high parents coming up to the fence/court to yell at you during the game.

The rule books are thick and difficult to digest and apply it all on the fly.

Get to high school and you have dumbass parents waiting for you in parking lot and coach’s screaming at you.

Many people quit because they can’t stand being yelled at. Often what you are left with is the Refs that just don’t give a shit what people think.

Several tournament games this winter didn’t have officials the day of the game. With weather and some officials saying “no way” it was a huge scramble.

If you think there is some huge national conspiracy against Iowa you might want to give up on sports and start watch Oliver Stone movies over and over.

Some people won't get involved because of the culture of officials. I know I wont. This attitude you dislpay right here in fact that officials are above reproach and parents and players are simply bad .

I have watched less basketball because of poor officials. Not sold on more Oliver Stone movies.

NBA refs base their calls on how popular the player is that commits the foul.

That makes it all nice and easy for you.

With a little bit of time you can get a taste of the other side. It’s very humbling and will give you a different perspective. But yeah, just stay away so you can keep going with the “officials screwed us over”.

Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying it’s easy but when game outcomes are actually having an effect from shitty officiating it’s getting bad. I ref soccer, i know shitty officiating because I am one.

I’m pretty sure they’re talking about the Iowa / Tennessee game. It’s college and has absolutely nothing to do with some HS game last winter.

Carry on.

I am sorry, that is where it all starts. Maybe you could post the link to where you can just sign up to ref the Division I NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

You start from bottom and work up. Cause and effect.

Once again you display the problem with many officials. Arrogance and assumptions.

I have officiated many times from Junior leagues through the small college level. I know all about it

This culture that officials do no wrong is apart of the problem

There's contact on every play and the refs have to decide when it's too much. Hard job. If you call too many fouls we watch a free throw contest if that's what you want. I'd like to go back to more calls on the hesitation dribble, which puts the defender at a disadvantage and traveling the way it used to be. Widen the lane and 6 fouls. I'm out...till next year. It was a solid season, no ragrets...

That’s because many of the good ones get sick and tired of getting screamed at.

Iowa didn’t lose because of the officials. I know most here disagree because hawk fans love to blame the officials for everything every time.

There is no solution. The players are bigger faster and stronger than ever. You have super slow motion and a dozen HD cameras to second guess everything. Plus most fans have a bias towards one team before it starts.

Lack of officials at the Iowa HS level is getting to a critical point. A friend of mine who is a longtime Iowa HS official thinks within 10 years players will have to call their own fouls. What a shitshow that’s going to be.

I understand missed calls, the game is quick and sometimes you don't have a great view. But the hand checking at mid court is hard to miss. That is a foul. You can't put your arm in the guys chest to impede his movement and Tennessee did it all game long.

The daily list of baseball games needing officials is scary to look at. Coach/town gets a reputation and officials avoid it like a disease. They can get paid to ref/ump anywhere. Why go deal with an ahole coach/fans.

The guy guarding JBo was allowed to reach, grab and restrict his movements all day long. It’s making the sport almost unwatchable.

That needs to be a mandate from NCAA and enforced from day 1 of season. Just because it’s the Hawks in March it isn’t all of s sudden going to get called.

I would prefer it gets cleaned up but obviously those in charge choose to look other way.

Traveling is rarely called anymore. Why some expected it to all of a sudden get called today is odd.

Yeah, I've long been a proponent of a 6 foul per player limit, then if a player got two early ticky tack fouls wouldn't have to sit them. While I recognize that officiating basketball is a tough job, for big time D1 hoops with all the money involved, it's difficult to understand why they couldn't have full time officials.

I've said for years that the pick-up games at the Y are far more fair than college games because guys call their own fouls/violations. And the calls are accepted without challenge about 95% of the time. YOU know when you travel, when you step on the end line, when you foul. So if you think that would be worse than what we have now, my question would be this: How? How could it be worse? And on the rare occasion when there would be disagreement, there's always the monitor review.

The players will probably be okay with that scenario, the nutcases in the stands I’m not so sure about.
