GA women's coach said her Diamond Battles was best player on the court!! REally???

Calm down y'all. Nothing wrong with an opposing coach building her team and her players up. Coaches do it *all the time,* including our coaches. Coach Abe is totally right about saying the game was played evenly. Georgia was right there, and Battles scored more efficiently than any other guard as well as played great defense.

Great defense, aided and abetted by some bad officiating as well.

I hate when teams have that sort of "philosophy", like MSU; grab, tug, hold, shove, hand-check, etc. all the time because they can't possibly call all of it. It's not basketball and it irritates the heck out of me. I have to credit the teams because it works, but I wish they would officiate it out of the game. You have 40 fouls in a half and half your team fouls out? Sorry, stop doing it.

Q. It seems like things kind of fell apart there in the final 2 minutes with those 3 consecutive turnovers. What do you think went wrong there?

COACH ABRAHAMSON-HENDERSON: Well, let me say first, Diamond was the best player on the floor tonight. She had — how many points did she have? Diamond had 21 points. So I mean, she was the reason why we were doing what we were doing. So, you know, I think, you know, our team played and did an amazing job, and played great defense, played suffocating defense. And down the stretch down is not anything indicative of the game.

Q. Coach, every time Iowa made a run in this game you seemed to have a response. Can you talk about your team’s resiliency?

COACH ABRAHAMSON-HENDERSON: We made a lot of runs. I know everything is going to be about Iowa right now. But my team is really good. They are really good. We came in here, we fought like crazy, we were the underdogs, but there was no underdog here today. We represented Georgia really, really well. And it was a tight ball game. We made runs. We went up. They cut it. They made some runs, we cut it back. It was an even game the whole game. The whole game. The last 2 minutes is not the game. So, you know, I mean we had two really really good teams on the floor today. And one of them was Georgia. For sure.

Q. Along those lines, what does it mean big picture for the program? In year one you are able to be as competitive as you were with a really talented Iowa team?

COACH ABRAHAMSON-HENDERSON: It means my coaches are amazing, and we have a really good coaching staff, and we took 15 players and got them to this point, which is unbelievable. That’s why I say Georgia was here too, everybody. And they are a seasoned veteran team. And they are good. And we were here. We were here. And we almost won the game. We were close enough to win that game. And I’m proud of our team. We brought a bunch of kids together. They bought in. Some of the Georgia players stayed. I brought kids from UCF. Some of the kids like Audrey Warren wanted to transfer because she wanted to be a part of greatness. So the Georgia brand is there, and I’m just really really proud of them to do this this year with 15 brand new players and our coaching staff. That’s why I keep saying that Georgia is here today.

Q. Your bench outscored Iowa 24-0. Have they been that consistent all year?

COACH ABRAHAMSON-HENDERSON: Yep. Yep. You guys just don’t watch us. We play in the SEC. The SEC is tough. They are tough, tough, tough, tough. Our defense has been the same. Our defense has held people down. Our defense held a lot of people down to their lowest scoring. And obviously, offensively, you know, we have a lot of weapons. So a lot of people were high-scoring today, and obviously, Diamond Battles led the way for us. Diamond Battles is a pro. She’s a pro. I know her name is not going to be out there. Caitlin is a pro for sure, but so is Diamond Battles. She is the reason we have gotten this far. I mean, she is — comes to UCF with me, Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year. All that. Then she comes here and makes Second Team, All-Defensive Team, plays one year here for us, and was the best player, in my opinion. She was leading everyone in scoring today. And played great defense and got steals and tips and all that. I feel like Javyn played well, Brittney played well, Audrey played well, Zoe played well. Everybody that went in really represented. And understand that a lot of them haven’t been — there’s probably five of them, six of them that have never been in the NCAA Tournament. So we did an amazing job.

Q. The other day you mentioned that you guys kind of go into games defensively with a goal in mind of how many points you want to give up for every team. Was 74 points near the goal is that what you guys were looking forward today?

COACH ABRAHAMSON-HENDERSON: We had them down before the last 2 minutes of a bunch of free throws. I mean, you know, when we played LSU we held them down to lowest scoring and everything. I mean, yeah. We had them right there. Yeah, I’m not going to give you the number.

Q. You are saying goodbye to many fifth-year seniors. What’s it mean to do it with this group of players, many that came with you from UCF. And what can everyone expect from the future of Georgia Basketball?

COACH ABRAHAMSON-HENDERSON: You just saw it. There’s going to be a lot of young kids that are going to want to play for us because winning is written all over Georgia. It’s been in the past. Andy Landers built Georgia. And to talk about the five seniors. That’s hard. Diamond Battles I have known since she was a junior in high school. So it’s probably been eight years. Brittney Smith I have known since she was a junior in high school. Eight years for her. Lish has probably been four years. Our freshmen I’ve known. None of them have played, but they are all coming back next year. And they are good and they are talented. I’ve known them for a long time. The only ones I really haven’t known for a long time were the ones that decided to stay at Georgia and trusted as a coaching staff. It’s just going to be really hard to lose, especially Brittney and Diamond because they came to Georgia and they, you know, were like us, and they helped us build this. Reload this, I should say. Reload this.

Q. How proud are you of your team?

COACH ABRAHAMSON-HENDERSON: I’m very proud. I mean, I’m very proud. Like all the things I’ve said, I’m very proud of them. Anybody could have won this game for sure. Hopefully next year we’ll come back and we can host. That would be awesome.

Q. How did the scout on Gabbie Marshall’s shooting ability play out today?

COACH ABRAHAMSON-HENDERSON: I don’t know, what did she have? Gabbie Marshall, my pretty-eyed girl. Good. I think good. I think the scouting report on Caitlin was great. She had 16 points. So she finished with a lot because she had some free throws. She had 16 points. Scouting report. And she averages 27 points a game, that’s a lot. I think we did a great job on her. And I think their role players really stepped up.

Well we know where you are from, y'all. Give credit where credit is due. Georgia lost, period!
The best pure basketball player on the court was Clark. 22 points, 13 assists, 3 steals. She got mugged alot, with nary a whistle blown.

The officials CAN call all of it. They choose not to. Which is ruining the sport.

I had a real issue with the end of the game. Hitting our guard in the face (then seen laughing about it after the intentional was called) then pushing CC onto the floor. Sorry, I thought GA played a good game but then I lost total respect for their coach and players. If you can't give it your best shot and lose gracefully, then stop playing.

It's coach speak. Her team and best player played better than expected and Iowa & Clark's shooting wasn't as sharp as they can be. How many times have Iowa coaches said the same thing about our players. She maybe arrogant but Iowa has had and has it's fair share of arrogant coaches too. It is what it is.

Honestly in hindsight I can say since they won yesterdays game may have been the best thing for this team instead of a 20 pt blowout. Lets them know can win a more physical defensive type of game. Wake up call to take care of the ball better out in Seattle. Won't win too many more games with 17 turnovers.

Maybe she meant Diamond was the best player in the floor for Georgia. In any case.....Hawks win so I don't care. Maybe Caitlin will read that and light an even bigger fire under her (if that is possible).

Coach Abe was bitter. Was the cheap shots at the end her call or just an upset player(s)?
I doubt they were her call.

And honestly, only the last one was a cheap shot and that was the one where the player smiled right after doing it. That one really should have been two fouls, first the actual foul on the floor when the ref blew the whistle and a second for the shove after the whistle.

The first one was correctly upgraded, but I really don't think she meant to smack Gabby in the face like that. I think it was just a scramble to foul as fast as possible since the clock had been running so much time while the refs didn't blow a foul. And when you're scrambling and flailing about you sometimes make a mistake.

I thought Clark was a little off yesterday so Diamond may have had the better game but Iowa was the better team and that's why Iowa is advancing and Georgia is going home. I wouldn't read to much into what Abe said, nothing wrong with arrogance in a head coach that talks up her team and her players. She had her team ready to play in a very tough environment.

One thing that gets tiring when following our womens team is all the complaining about officiating from fans. It's bad across the board and as long as they don't pay worth a crap it will never get better. The officials they get for womens basketball is marginally better than high school. I didn't like the dirty play at the end of the game either but at least they called it, I've seen officials look the other way in those situations because they don't want the game decided by technical free throws. Clark gets mugged in every game, sometimes the officials call it and sometimes they don't. She's the best player on the court, she should be used to it by now.

After she punched Gabbie in the face, she was jawing at the rest of the Hawkeyes on the floor, then tried to chase after the ref before finally going to the bench. None of this was televised. After the foul was upgraded, she gave these bullshit reactions like it was unbelievable that she was called.

If it was an accident, help Gabbie up and be cool about it. She blamed everyone but herself, talked trash after doing it, and it seemed typical of their program.

She said Diamond was the best player on the court "tonight." Honestly without my rose color glasses on I think she was. It was 1 game, you take the 4 token free throws out at the end of the game and Caitlyn has 17 points, it was an uneven performance due to some great defense. Things got a little sideways at the end but honestly it is a fair enough take, nothing to quibble about guys.

I don’t see the point of “going out on a search so you can feel outraged or proud based on opposing coach”.

Let her have it,... must suck to have your star be the best player on the floor and still lose.

No way. Diamond disappeared in the 2nd half and Clark did this:

Clark got her points in, she shot the ball 17 times (made 6). So when I say she looked off I am talking about her shooting. Her passing did lead to a lot of points, I don't think Monica had to dribble the ball once to score her 20 points.

So to you 17 points+12assists (taking away her final ft’s) is a lesser game than 21points+1assist? In absolutely no world was Caitlin not the best player on the floor. Caitlin seemed to play a smart game getting her teammates involved and being very selective about when to take her own shots.
IMO, the way Ga was extending their d clear out to half court, instead of passing the ball into the high post which seemed to be what Ga wanted them to do, Clark should’ve been attacking that first defender off the bounce. Once she got past that defender their d pretty much had to be out of position trying to cut her off. We saw it on her drive at the end. She could have put a ton of pressure on their D by being more aggressive driving, but clearly Bluder wanted them working the high post. That did work a lot to the tune of a bunch of open 3’s, but also lead to a ridiculous amount of turnovers. Again JMO

2 hands to the face when the ball was below her waste? sure

A coach backing her senior player. I would expect nothing less. "Hey, we just lost a close game in the tournament. Also, don't forget you weren't the best player on the floor."

CC also had 12 assists, 3 steals, and 5 rebounds. So, I respectfully disagree. Diamond had the better day shooting and that is all IMO.

Battles had 16 points in the first half, and she had 5 points in the second half. Clark had 8 points in the first half, and 14 in the second half. When the game is on the line, typically, the best player steps up. Clark clearly (IMO) owned the second half. Battles is a very good defensive player. Clark outplays her with her assists. It seems to me, that if Martin and Warnock don't cough up 10 turnovers, this game becomes a 15+ point win, and no-one is talking about Battles being the best player on the court.

Points aren't the only thing that determines the best player on the floor. Diamond scored 16 of her 21 in the first half. Where was she when they needed points down the stretch? Clark was by far the better "player".
