What energy exactly did the Dems spend on making sure he didn't get confirmed? It doesn't take much energy to say "Hey that guy is being investigated for raping minors, why is he nominated to be AG?" That one fact is readily available to everyone, and takes zero energy to put out there.
You're putting more energy into trying to convince people it was some clever move by Trump than the Dems put in by simply pointing out that Gaetz bangs high schoolers.
I know the low hanging fruit with Gaetz comparisons is Butthead but my god you can't argue against it.

The woman who says she had sex when she was a minor with then-Rep. Matt Gaetz told the House Ethics Committee she had two sexual encounters with him at one party in 2017, sources familiar with her testimony tell CNN.
The woman, who was 17 years old at the time, testified that the second sexual encounter, which has not previously been reported, included another adult woman. She also testified to both sexual encounters in a civil deposition as part of a related lawsuit, sources said.
After being asked for comment for this story, Gaetz announced he was backing out as President-elect Donald Trump’s attorney general nominee.
Gaetz has repeatedly denied having sex with a minor and was not charged after the Justice Department investigated these alleged encounters.
Gaetz and Trump were working to lock down support on Capitol Hill for the former Florida congressman to become the next attorney general. Members of the Republican-led House Ethics panel voted along party lines on Wednesday not to release the results of their investigation and instead decided to meet again on December 5 to vote on the final report.
The other woman who was an adult at the time has denied participating in the alleged second encounter, according to multiple sources familiar with her ethics testimony.
The Justice Department closed its investigation of Gaetz last year after prosecutors recommended that no criminal charges be brought against him. The House Ethics Committee revived its investigation of the Florida lawmaker once DOJ concluded its case and is facing mounting pressure to release its final report.
Allegations against Gaetz also have surfaced as part of a civil dispute in federal court in Florida. The deposition from the woman who was 17 at the time remains under seal, but her allegations were described during another deposition that is public record. At one point, attorneys recounted that she had testified having sex with Gaetz on an air hockey table at the house party while the homeowner watched.
An attorney for the woman who was a minor at the time of the sexual encounters has called for the ethics report to be released “immediately,” noting that his client was a high school student at the time and saying there were witnesses.
Joel Leppard, an attorney who represents two other women who were witnesses in the House Ethics Committee probe, said one of his clients testified that she witnessed Gaetz having sex with a minor. Leppard said his client told the committee she did not believe Gaetz knew at the time that her friend was underage.
Both of Leppard’s clients sat for closed-door testimony before the committee. He has said that both them testified that Gaetz paid them for “sexual favors.”
Leppard also called on the House Ethics Committee to release the report on Gaetz, emphasizing the importance of transparency. “Democracy demands transparency. Release the Gaetz Ethics report,” Leppard said.

No way that gets pulled. Hegseth will be confirmed. Dude is smart as hell. There have not been vocal objections by R senators to his nomination to my knowledge. Unlike this nomination. I dont think there is any there there to his NDA. If I was famous, no way Id have sex with anyone without a videotaped, cloud archived verbal consent these days.
FTR Im glad this one failed. Never been a fan. Was hoping he was a sacrificial lamb all along. Not sure that's actually true but one can hope. Dude is weird, creepy, a clown and my objections to him predate this nomination and have even said as much on here prior to all this. Called for him to be primaried months ago. Along with Boebert and MTG. All are bad for the party in this order Gaetz>MTG>Boebert.

Agree on the Gaetz stuff an old journalist once said there are two types of elected congressmen. Show horses and workhorses. Gaetz total show horse. Plus yes Gaetz has a law degree, but he’s never worked as a lawyer has he?
I can see nominating Paxton or Cruz neither of which I like, but at least they are qualified./experienced

Ernst has been an advocate of cracking down on sexual abuse/assault/harassment in the military. She shouldn't be one to support a guy like Hegseth and his baggage, but she probably will.
9 women republican Senators in theory should have issues with the nominee. Their reason will be interesting.

It is remarkable that you think the Dems spent any political capital to remove someone that his own party colleagues thought committed ethical violations in the house.

I believe that Gabbard has some serious issues to overcome for her appointment as does the F0X guy for defense. To get these folks on-board Trump is gonna have to spend lot of his election capital…abd it is not exclusively in Democrats. However, Gaetz was really a piss poor choice by a guy who famously said “only the best”.
There was a question about whether only Republicans had failed Cabinet nominations.
For those arguing about how smart the department of defense nominee is. One of the biggest needs is people skills. Or managing his department. Over 200000 women are currently in the Armed Forces. So it appears he maybe lacking this skill.
People skills will not be a priority for this position,.. Handled correctly, this nominee will be universally despised by the higher ups and loved by the enlisted...
Women have been in combat roles for years. And they have done damn well.

2. Especially good that there are Senators who continue to recognize the prerogatives and place of the Senate in the bigger design.
3. It's an unusual thing in politics when almost 'everybody wins'. In no particular order - Johnson gets labor peace in his party, Trump scopes out his "real" pull and gets a chit from Johnson, Senators don't have to go through shit show, D's claim a scalp, some house R's get more personal revenge, and most importantly, the rest of us don't get Gaetz as AG. About the only loser is Gaetz, though we'll see if he shows up somewhere else like cruise director at Mar a lago.

He will probably run in the special election and re-claim his seat. If he doesn't it's cause he's scared of the ethics report.
Especially the ones who love unconscious sex or women shouldn’t be allowed in combat roles.. Think the 200000 enlisted women might have an issue.
Can see an argument about infantry. But tank operators, humvee drivers, pilots, drone operators. Aren’t they all considered combat roles?
