Game Notes & Two Deeps for Iowa vs. South Dakota State

Harris is suspended for game one. He'll be back in game two. Depends on how well Roberts plays if he starts right away or has to earn it back....
Again, not talking about his suspension. I am talking about the fact he had an injury he was dealing with.

As I just posted, I wasn't aware he was injured When was that?
I don't know if it was pre fall camp or at the beginning but pictures early in fall camp showed him on the sidelines and I don't believe he was out there for kid's day either. Not sure we have ever gotten word on what he is dealing with.

The tea leaves say we will be seeing a LOT of Cooper DeJean on the field this year. Everyone knows Xavier and Graves will be out there too. I expect next weeks 2-deeps to reflect that.

Regardless - Saturday can't get here quick enough.

Heading over Friday AM from West Des Moines to play Blue Top Ridge in Riverside, stay at hotel/casino, be at my main tailgate by 8:30, take in the game on a great weather day, be back home on deck watching Ohio State vs Notre Dame by 7.

Can't beat that - period.

I'm assuming we will find out more tomorrow on kick-off and punt returners. Seems like there is a decent list of guys that could fill those roles.

Brecht has been slow to return from a July injury. Hamstring possibly from baseball? Never heard for sure. I know he practiced in shorts at one point in mid August, but hasn't been full go yet to my knowledge, similar to Keagan Johnson.

Bostick is such a great kid. I kind of expect to see him at some point, maybe staying at four games or under, due to the lack of receiver depth. He looked good at Kid's Day too.

Thanks!!

Remember that KF depth charts usually reflect who finished last week's game as a no. 1.

Expect healthy amounts of Dunker, Colby at RT, Van Ness playing every down snaps at DE, and Graves rotating at DT.

I think you nailed it. That is very close to the starting lineup from the bowl game.

Well , I’ll be honest. If this is accurate, not what I was hoping for other than at least Keagan’s on the depth chart.

I’m guessing the rumors about Davidkov are true.

Not thrilled about seeing Plumb in the starting lineup.

No Dunker which we were hearing good things about.

I’m sure Dejean will see the field at Cash but feels like we’re wasting another great athlete. Either he or Jacobs will be sitting while yet another former walk on safety is starting.

Question for you? How many former walk-on safety’s have to make the NFL under Phil Parker before you let it be what it is?

Been 4 or 5 bare minimum. Lets petition to get him fired for playing the wrong future NFLers…right?!

When we are up 35 to 3 at half, expect to see lots of backups in the 2nd half.
You mean 6 mins left 4th quarter. Run run pass attempt punt for the O.

Wish Iowa would get more tun and actually run the O so backups get that experience of really playing.

Time will tell it was slightly better but seems this staff has always left starters in to long and not given backups the proper run/playing time when it’s available.

IMO

Of anyone on the staff, Phil Parker's decisions for the Defensive Backfield is probably that last person anyone should question.

I hope with the issues at WR Bostick plays more than 4 games. Kid is super talented. No offense to Jack Johnson, but Bostick should be on the field before him.

To be fair, most coaches seem to have a tendency to play starters longer than needed, often going for stats.

Don't even think it's that. It's more the fact that if the other team leaves their starters in, a lead can shrink pretty quickly, and when you put the starters back in they're now cold and have been sitting around for 20-30 minutes of real-time.

Coaches just want the game put away beyond any doubt before they make that decision.

As a FR that was true, he led the team in TFLs and sacks playing part time as a SO. Parker was a fine player but he wasn’t a 2nd round talent.

AJE had 10.5 sacks, 16.5 TFL and four forced fumbles as a sophomore.

He had 11.5 sacks, 14 TFL and four forced fumbles as a junior.

It appears that our coaches truly maximized his value as a sophomore. They had him in on nearly all passing downs and he had fresh legs. And it showed up in the stats.

But some fans criticize coaches even when they are absolutely correct.

speaking to the 2 deeps right now about OT, seems like it will be more than fluid with 6-8 guys that could fit in to that position. Colby has flexibility to go OG/OT. Richman will stay at tackle, Plumb could go left or right tackle.

Nwankpa, Hall, Dunker, Graves all in the rotation, sounds like Van Ness will be getting reps at DT and DE

Punt returning: Bruce, Wick, Dejean...no Wetjen.
kick return: Gavin and Leshon added as well.

One of Phil's top priorities is "keep everything in front of you, don't give up the big play". It seems like that is why he has occasionally leaned toward experience vs raw athletic ability at FS
My neighbor is Schulte's Uncle and his son (Quinn's cousin) was a walk-on for 1 year at DB. He said exactly that. He said Quinn is really smart, is fundamentally sound, and will be in the right position all the time. He said Parker loves that in his Free Safeties, especially being they call the plays in the defensive backfield.

Not saying at all that X isn't exactly that but that Parker will value Schulte's experience and time in the system early on for these reasons. It might just get to a point where he fully trusts X the same way AND he has the superior athleticism/ability.

To add to that, I think it also has to do with how established a particular unit is. I would expect an OL made up largely of 2nd and 3rd year starters to get pulled earlier than a group made up of less experienced players.

Damn I didnt even know SE Missouri St had a football team. Drake as a 45.5 pt dog? Holy cow, didnt think they made spreads that high!

ISU didn't cover that spread against Drake in 18. They needed a friendly holding call to hang on for the win.
