I read ESPN and their 2 of their 3 guys are picking the Dayton's Obi Toppin, I get it, he's a good player and is also having a great year.. But would he be even in the conversation if he played night in and night out in the Big Ten. I highly doubt Dayton would only have 2 losses. You cannot argue that Garza is playing against much better teams in the toughest conference and still putting up better numbers then Obi. I Really Hope Luka wins it.. he has played amazing. If he does decide to come back next year we could be an amazing team and he would probley be right back in the mix for POY again.

John Gasaway, college basketball writer: Just wait until Obi Toppin starts wreaking havoc against teams outside the Atlantic 10 for a change, then everyone will see why he's still my No. 1 choice. Opposing defenses just don't have many answers for a 6-foot-9 guy who can score virtually at will in the paint (his 2-point percentage borders on being Zion-like) but can also step out and hit one 3 per game with accuracy.
...

We shall see. If Toppin does really well in the NCAAs than he probably deserves it. Hopefully Luka has a couple of really good ( but maybe not 30+) games and the Hawks get to the sweet 16.

If Toppin get's the POY, then the award needs to be changed to "Athlete Of The Year" and if they did that Udoka Azubuike of Kansas would win it hands down, and it's not even close. Toppin plays in the A10, which will probably get 1 or 2 teams in the NCAA tournament. He's a great athlete but the numbers he puts up is against weak conference teams.
Garza on the other hand has to go against some of the best centers not only in the BIG, but in the nation and is double and triple teamed most of the time and still puts up arcade numbers.
Garza has the BTPOY already locked up, it's whether he can overcome a potential late season team fade that would sway some voters for NPOY, but his numbers against the best is not a fluke.

We know in reality that it's not just about the individual player achievements, but the relative success of that players team as
well.
Although Iowa has exceeded most preseason expectations, is the teams record going to be good enough to get Luka the votes?

At this point I see no reason for Garza to leave, especially if we stub our toe in the post season. There isn't much, if any, NBA interest and with Frank's bank account there's no reason to try to chase money overseas.

As for NPOY, if Toppin does damage in the tourney it's his. I'm with the rest of Iowa country in thinking Garza's done far more with far less against far better. Difference is Toppin's been hyped all year and plays for a highly ranked team. It'll be another Keith Duncan situation, maybe even in the Big Ten, and we'll have to deal with national favoritism all over again.

A NPOY has to play on a team that finishes at least elite 8,.. If Garza want's it as a Hawkeye he will have to come back next year and make another run...

Kinda like the heisman...normally goes to the top player on a top team, not usually the best player overall. If the team falls so does the stock of the candidate.
