Owen Freeman on the outs?

I guess a brand new Volkswagen Atlas wasn't good enough for Owen. Oh well.
It was just a lease....

Iowa basketball has been in a dream/nightmare sequence for the past 30-40 or so years. Zero BT championships since 1970 (outright) or 1979 (tied), take your pick. Last Final Four 45 years ago. Last Elite Eight 38 years ago. Last Sweet Sixteen 26 years ago. At some point everyone must face the reality that Iowa is a school that plays basketball, but Iowa is not a basketball school. At this point, Iowa shouldn't be nibbling around the edges to improve.
Unfortunately this is true.

We are no longer good enough to be relevant nor bad enough to be irrelevant. We just are.

We don't need gimmicks, we need a coach that knows how to win which is why I want McCollum.

I don't know enough about McCollum. But I hope they hire a coach that values defense without sacrificing offense. I don't want to watch 55-50 games, but I do want to watch guys busting their asses on defense : boxing out and rebounding (actually on both ends), fighting through picks, helping, talking, challenging passing lanes, moving your feet and not reaching, diving on the floor (not bending over) for loose balls, hard fouls when necessary, and then get the ball and go. And if the guys on the team can't/won't do that, then cut them loose. Every last one of them, if need be. The first week of practice, every player should be bruised and puking his guts out because it is freaking hard.

I'm in no position to question anyone's injury. If they say it's season ending, then I accept that because I certainly don't know any more than the experts around Owen.

I guess it's bad luck but the truth is that this team wasn't going anywhere with or without Owen Freeman anyway.

Hope he makes a full recovery.
Look on the bright side, he'll only miss 10 games. Because there's no way we're making Big Ten tourny.

Finger injury… I’m sorry but this has transfer written all over. Back in the day I played most of my senior season with a fractured wrist! It was painful as hell but you only have so many games to play. Maybe I’m overthinking but this type of injury shouldn’t end someone’s season…
We don't know the extent of the injury and whether playing with it until the end of the season could cause greater damage, BUT, Kenny Arnold played with a broken thumb and a year or two before Vince Brookins played with a broken hand. Would Owen still be playing if the team were better?

The PP incident may have hurt attendance in 2003, 2004, etc. It probably did. Then there was Todd Lickliter..

Fran had CHA's average attendance back up to over 14K+ 2014-15 or so. Fans were starting to come back for a time there, but it has tailed off again and seems to be seriously trending downwards as of late.

We can debate all day long the causes for the attendance woes, but Pierre Pierce has f@ck all to do with the attendance problems in 2025. Same for Todd Lickliter. Those are just excuses at this point. This is Fran's program now, and has been for a very long time.

IMO, there is simply a deep apathy in the fanbase as it relates to men's hoops. Who saw the atmosphere at CHA yesterday for the women's game with USC? Caitlin being in the house surely helped, but you don't see anything like this on the men's side these days. The program and fanbase needs a shot in the arm.
Again, I haven't seen anyone suggest that the Pierce incident has anything to do with attendance problems in '25

Oh yes. It's all "very simple" ....except that "not contributing to that (poor attendance)" costs people hard earned money and time.

It's hilarious to me how goof balls like you always seem to have such an expansive sense of largess with the time and money of OTHER PEOPLE.

Just buy tickets, and travel, and spend a few hours watching a game that you won't enjoy. Do this for every home game. It's so simple. How can you not? Do it for the program. What are you? Some kind of filthy self-interested consumer?! lmao

I'll say it again -- you're goofy.
Sure, those are all things that factor into your choice of whether to attend or not.

That doesn't change that fact that less fans in the seats is bad for the program, and that fans have the choice to do something about that.

I get this is impossible for many of you. But if you don't want to support the program (which, guess what, gives the program support), then don't complain when the type of things that take place at programs that aren't being supported actually happen.

Carry on though, because I highly doubt you're capable of listening. I'm sure you quit attending during the Lickliter years and talked a bunch of shit about those teams too. Were tickets and gas somehow more expensive back then too?

And I'm sure you have some sort of justification for habitually littering the Hawkeye community with negativity too.

We get it. You're just a selfish consumer. You've said as much as few times now

Iowa basketball is beyond boring. I haven’t watched a complete game for a couple years, and won’t do so until Fran is gone. If you want to spend your money seeing that garbage in person, that’s your choice, but get off your high horse.

He’s already told the coaches he’s transferring. He’s basically using this as an excuse to “opt out”

The team wasn’t going anywhere. But still kind of a soft move to quit on everybody if you ask me. Garza’s freshman team was terrible and he still gave 100% until the bitter end. He would’ve never sat due to a finger injury
Owen Freeman is no Luka Garza. Not even close. But this is on Fran. Team is poorly put together and uninspired. That’s on the coach.

Freeman is not even close to Luka so he's not going to make any money in the NBA. If he wants to make money off basketball, college is all he has. He needs to transfer and get as much money as he can. Once he's done with college, he'll just be another tall guy walking around.

I agree he has no future in the NBA, but he could make a very decent living playing overseas.

A new coach could at least attempt to recruit both Freeman and Dix to stay. If there is a decent financial offer that isn't too far below what they could get on the open market they might be willing to listen.
If Fran stays, he's better off shopping his talents to the highest bidder.

Owen’s first two years in the program have been much better than Luka’s first two seasons. Luka made his big jump in his junior season. Owen doesn’t have the perimeter shooting ability that Luka had but has better post moves than Luka had at the same point in his career. Owen certainly has the potential for a lot of improvement and it is crucial that we keep him in the program going forward. He is the best recruit we have had since the Murray brothers.

The more I think about it, the more I think McCollum would be the right move for the program. Would cost you a lot less money in terms of buyouts and brings about the same level of expectations that DeVries would imo.

I watched his Drake team against Souther Illinois this weekend. Highly engaging guy & coaches the entire game.

We could hope Owen has a 12 pound cyst that needs removed.

Any hand surgeons on the board who can opine on what is the most likely type of injury sustained which requires surgery to avoid the risk of permanent injury?

He can make plenty of $$$ overseas.

KU took Moss from us a few years ago. Freeman is already a better player than he ever was, and has way more potential, especially w/the right coach. But you're also right, he would flourish at Creighton.

Yup. Get him in a place that will push/require him to do things the correct way and he could be a really good player. He’s in open gym mode at Iowa

Owen is better athlete than Garza was. Garza hasn't made it at NBA level and at this point, neither would Freeman. However, Freeman has enough athleticism to defend/rebound if he were to develop some shooting touch.

I don't think Freeman shutting down is lack of character. He is professional player, underpaid by today's NIL standard and playing for a Coach that is not very good. Let's get a new coach and hopefully there is a chance we can come up with NIL and bring Dix and Freeman back. Another year of Fran means Dix and Freeman both leave because they can see the No Defense system is not competitive.

Garza has been in the NBA for 4 years now. He just dropped 16 pts last week with a solid stat line. What are you smoking.

The last point is important.

Fran’s failure isn’t just X’s and O’s. He can’t survive in the NIL era because he’s not good at engaging with the fanbase and drumming up interest/money.

The last three coaches have been largely unlikeable. We desperately need an engaging, charismatic coach

The next coach needs to be able to recruit a roster of players that aren't 90% white guys.
