He's 95. He may not have checked the batteries, or had them replaced at the correct time.

His wife was found dead in the bathroom with an open bottle of pills.

Really, I was riveted pretty much the whole way through. I thought it was great if slightly predictable towards the end.
Then I just read this. Seriously? Shit.
I wonder if he died and she offed herself and the dog?
But why would she leave the other 2 dogs alone? That seems odd. Unless some pills spilled and the dog downed some of the pills.
Maybe she couldn't get the nerve to slaughter 3 dogs or maybe they resisted her?

Her limbs were mummified. Sounds like they don't think foul play, but investigating further due to the pills, him dying in the mud room and her in the bathroom. Very very odd. Carbon monoxide has already been ruled out.The news said Gene and his wife could have been dead for weeks.
Reports also state she had considerable decomp but don't say that about him.
They were found in different areas of the house and even that could impact decomp.
Would have enlisted from 1946 to 1951.

German Shepard found in it's crate, probably died of neglect after they passed...

It makes us all need to remember to check in on family members that are of age to worry about.
The only way this makes sense is if his wife was on her way to get pills to help her symptoms (headache, nausea, dizziness and balance issues) and then collapsed and died. Otherwise the pill bottle on the sink counter spilled sounds more like OD.
It would be easy to tell how long the dog was in the kennel before dying. No piles of feces and urine? Died shortly after being placed in it. Assuming it was a locked crate that is. Locked crate and piles of excrement and indicators of stress then suggest dog died of neglect after the people died.
There were two other living dogs running free at the scene. Why intentionally kill only one?

Last time I saw video of Hackman, it looked like he couldn't swat a fly. I don't think he did anything wrong here.
Agreed. I'm favoring the following:
He died naturally.
She cant ‘live without him’ So takes OD of pills thereby going out together.
Dogs was kenneled prior to all of the above and he dies due to lack of food and water over days and days.
Just a theory.
Hopefully we get more real answers in the coming days.
Ummmmmm…… 2 deceased bodies possibly dead for several days with 2 German Shepards? Not only was she decomposed but she was possibly eaten by the dogs. Grosss.
Neighbors can help family with this too.
We have an aged widower still in his house. Every night he pulls the shade on a specific window. Every morning he lifts the shade as a signal to us neighbors he is up and ok. If the shade is still down when I leave for work I call his kids who live 45 minutes away. Same goes for evenings and lowering the shade.
