Golf-Who's the asshole?

Being honest, when I'm a single I want to play as fast as possible. I'll keep snaking my way through groups if need be but only if they let me play through. I would have let the guy play through to try and let that guy put pressure on the next group to let him play through.

What you are describing is not what any rational golfer would ever do. What a dork... if the course is that busy then you know you are in for a long day. He's definitely at fault.

I generally give it once before I say something. Accidents happen, sometimes you lose the group ahead behind trees, or you just hit a helluva shot.

So once I can live with, especially if they drive up and apologize - in my experience they often do. After that is when I get angry.
Based on OP’s story, it was very much deliberate in this case.

He had to be wearing a cyclone polo and a MAGA hat to reach those levels of doucheness. Can't believe you left those details out.

He was definitely the A-hole. Beyond that his shot over the walkers was actually dangerous and he shouldn't be allowed back.

Guy was a dick head and he knew it, which is why he picked up and jumped the foursome,.. He didn't want anymore confrontation with you or your group...
This. He thought .. 'you know, if I were the group I just did that to, I'd hit into me right now...'

Might be interesting to report an assault.

I would’ve taken one of the breakfast balls in my pocket and chucked it right at his cart

In a typical situation, where I'm over a hill, maybe in a blind spot, and the ball rolls into me, I'll ignore it the first time. That certainly wasn't the case here - the guy launched a ball over people who were 100 or 150 yards out in front of them. I'd sure as hell complain at the clubhouse and expect them to ban the guy for good, and there's a decent chance there'd have been a physical confrontation with him. That wasn't just an asshole move, that was extremely dangerous & could have seriously hurt someone. I'm a pretty low handicap player, and I wouldn't have the confidence that I won't thin one when intending to hit it over them.

90% sure I would let it fly if he didn't skip ahead. 10% would hold back for fear liability if I hit him.

"Sunglasses has had enough. He gets out, tees his ball up, and proceeds to hit a drive right over the walkers, who were about 50 yards down the fairway."

Stated distance was 50 yards,.. This jerk was out of control.

It's a long story, but here's a new one I have never seen before today:

TL;DR Summary:

A golfer was playing as a single at a golf course in Des Moines and was grouped with three others—a single with his wife caddying and a twosome. They were playing smoothly until the back nine when they caught up to a slow-moving foursome. A single golfer, who they called "sunglasses," caught up to them and was visibly frustrated, although the group explained they were also waiting on the foursome ahead.

As they continued, "sunglasses" became increasingly impatient, culminating in him hitting a drive over two members of the group who were still in the fairway, a dangerously aggressive and rude action. Despite the dangerous behavior, he dismissed the group’s concerns and drove off. The OP is baffled by sunglasses’ extreme reaction and wonders if there was anything their group could have done differently to prevent the incident.

That's as bad as it gets right there, never had anything that bad happen on the course to me.

One thing is odd though, the clubhouse paired up all of you for a tee time then let him go off on his own? That's bad management right there.

On a lot of courses you can choose to not be paired up,.. this guy obviously prefers to play alone.

Where’s the phuquin’ “ranger”? Every city course has’’em and they were working yesterday at Waveland, so I would assume they had one at Blank. This should be the courses (management) problem and not yours. In today’s world, these issues are complicated because “you never know who is carrying a weapon” and when they might produce one.
The Chiodo/DSM golf courses certainly are not afraid to (over) charge for goods and services in the pro shop/ snack bar but they are a little suspect on how they choose to enforce rules and conduct of their clients. This is my main complaint about playing “city golf courses” in Polk County. 5 hour rounds of golf are frustrating and ridiculous. On a course like Blank and Jester there is no excuse for it. At least Waveland with its hills and trees can offer an occasional excuse.

Is Blank on the east side of DSM? Asking because of your "never know who's carrying" comment. I'd also like to know how many people get shot up on golf courses in Iowa.

This is what I thought, too. Many courses now force you make tee times online, so I didn't have the choice of going out alone. Maybe different for "walk ins."

Bad management at Blank is a staple.

This reminds me of when a car is riding your ass on a 2 lane highway, dangerously passes you (and then does the same to a few subsequent cars in front of you in similar, dangerous fashion) only for you all to meet up a the same stop light a couple miles down the road.

This guy is a complete ass-hat.

You were much kinder to him than I would have been (not giving you a hard time, impressed with your restraint to be honest).

If he would have gotten to the Tee in front me and I wasn't able to physically stop him first, he would have gotten the loudest FFFFFFF******CCCCCCKKKKKKKKK YYYYYYOOOOOOUUUUUUU during his backswing that I could muster.

A bit off subject but honest question, I have played Waveland and Jester, Is Blank worth a trip from Newton to play on a weekday?

I suppose on a weekday. The tee times aren’t spread out enough so it’s always at least 4:30 on a weekend. If you’re coming to DSM there’s a lot better options but the layout itself isn’t bad.

If it's a course that isn't really busy they will, if they are booked up for the day you're not getting that option most times.

Blank is quite similar to Jester…flat, more trees than Jester but not obtrusive like Waveland and big greens, a little more “rolly” than Jester’s…it would be worth the trip…. But don’t talk to the animals!

I mean...not really. TCI, Legacy, even Otter Creek in Ankeny, sure.

Usually play TCI twice every golf season, Have yet to play Legacy or Otter Creek.

I don't see a lot of really busy courses anymore,. at least not like there used to be.
Just went to Brown Deer's website for next weekend, both days are booked up until after 2pm and you can't book as a single. Just an example, we play there a lot nice course.

If you want to get through the course fast as a single get there at sunrise.

Middle of the day you can’t expect everybody to bend over backwards for you.

This is the first thing that stuck out to me. You came in as a single and they paired you up with three others (actually 4, the caddie). The other thing that stuck out is they paired up a mix of walkers and cart riders. That is odd. I walk all the time, and I play alone a lot of the time. I have grouped up with cart riders and am able to keep up, especially when it's busy and there is a lot of waiting, so it's not like that is crazy. I just find it odd that they paired you up with a group like that but let this guy go out as a single on a cart knowing the group make-ups in front of him. Should have paired him up too.

Oh, and the guy was a douche. I wouldn't have said anything, maybe shook my head in disbelief. Not wasting the time on people like that, nor are they worth getting into a confrontation with. Report him to the clubhouse and let them deal with it.

Bright\ Grandview gets the honor of serving DSM Eastside golfers. Wear your hard hat when playing there…hole proximities are dangerously close there.
Blank serves DSM southside… and the south side of DSM has never been a stranger to gun play.
Earlier this year while playing Waveland, my group watched a full blown gang fight breakout in the 16th hole with the foursome in front of us…all we could do was call the pro shop and the police and watch then throw clubs and bags and dusts at each other for 10 minutes or so…the action could be observed by anyone driving by on I-235, too. Police arrested the party and took weapons from them when they removed them from the course…all on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. So…you just never know about who or when and firearms. It is something one doesn’t expect when going out to your local city golf course. But…..be prepared!

Ag….buf on Sunday afternoons, tge have hugh schoolers manning the pro shop and registering guests….I am sure they are told to get folks on the golf course and get their $$ in tge cash register as their #1 priority. It’s after Labor Day And altho busy, the courses aren’t running “max” sun-up to sun-set like they are during the summer.
