The games you don't get to schedule (conference) Riley is well under 500. Yes a bit of a head scratcher.

Thanks for the link. To play devils advocate, he wasn't offered the USC job. According to the article, the AD wanted him, but he still had to interview for it. I would assume if he had a job offer on the table, he would have said screw you to the Chargers.

Do you have a link for the Bama job?

Also, regarding interviews at USC: He had already been chosen after multiple interviews by the Athletic Director. The only remaining 'interview' was a meeting with the USC President. In most cases, that meeting is just a 'rubber stamp' approval, as the AD makes those hires unhindered. Speaking generally of course:

Trojans athletic director Mike Garrett, remembering how respected Riley was as a former USC offensive coordinator, had picked him as his guy after an impressive interview.

All that was left was President Steven Sample's approval, and Riley was in a limo on the 405 freeway, coming to Los Angeles to seal the deal when his cell phone rang.

Not saying He is Nick Saban or anything even close, but take a look at what his record was before he went to LSU. A coaches previous record at a shit school doesn't always mean everything.

Some coaches need a change of pace, or all they need is top 10 facilities in the country. OSU had the second shittiest facilities in the PAC 12 only ahead of Washington State, where he will be going to a place that has the 2nd best in the B1G, only behind Ohio St.

I was also not that impressed with him. This was the first time I had seen him speak. He seems like a nice enough guy but he comes off as pretty low energy. I would be surprised if he is a great recruiter. I'm sure he's a decent coach based on his track record but it didn't leave me with the impression he is going to be in the same league as Urban Meyer or Harbaugh (I know that's a ridiculously high standard but I think some Nebraska fans thought if they fired Pelini that they would get someone of that caliber as a replacement).

I questioned the hire... does't make sense??? Why hire a guy that is 61 and will be looking to retire in 4 or 5 seasons? He has no history with the program, never have coached in the Big Ten or Big Twelve that I know of and from what I have read, doesn't even like recruiting... I said it once and say it again, Riley is a Ferentz Clone less any titles or championships. You know what? That could be a good thing for Iowa fans...

Where did you read he doesn't like recruiting? He may a terrible coach, and I wouldn't want him anywhere near our program, but if there's one thing he seems to be is a pretty social-media savvy and energetic recruiter. He's recruiting circles around us, he just probably won't be able to coach them.

Agree that he was an unexpected, perhaps shocking, hire. And he hasn't proved a thing yet, at NU. But his recruiting work is off to a pretty good start and the team already in Lincoln seems to have come around quickly as these things go.

I see a couple reasons for the hire that make sense:

1. He is a 'safe' hire with experience at all levels of the sport. His lack of success at OSU came only because he left for a few years in the middle of his tenure for the NFL. It was his team and recruits that overachieved in the couple years they did so. He left a very full cupboard and another coach got the credit. At least that's the justification being used.

2. He is extremely well respected. The offer to coach USC was a certainty until the NFL called. And his decision not to even talk to Bama was based on a promise to his family. Hard to argue with the logic behind those decisions. Maybe he is one of the rare breeds that truly values family over platitudes about family.

3. His age may be a plus. I suspect that among higher circles at NU, there is some expectation that Scott Frost will/should be head coach at some point in the future. But they just weren't ready for it yet, or Scott made clear that he wasn't ready yet. So they needed a coach that could keep things in roughly the same range of success level and recruiting level at least, and hopefully elevate the program. He will be very well paid, compared to the OSU job, and can retire with ease after a 4-6 year stay at Lincoln, and hand the reins to Frost when Frost/NU is ready. Should that time ever come. Perhaps Frost will end up head coach at Oregon or some other school. But the next couple years should show whether the genius behind Oregon's offense is mostly Frost. Or whether Mariota is just 'one of those guys' that makes any OC look like Einstein.

I am thrilled to have Riley, though I was as puzzled as everyone to begin with.

I also am hopeful that KF gets things turned around at Iowa, or that the right changes take place. I really want Black Friday to mean something for the West Division most years, and NU badly needs a true rival.

Good luck Hawks, and hope to see plenty of you in Lincoln next year. I live in Florida but am planning to be there for this one.

Best wishes,

Flood

I compare coaching at Oregon St to coaching Iowa St. Except even worse. Not a lot of homegrown talent and is in Oregon's shadow. From everything I've seen of him, and that's alot of Beaver games, I think he'll be fine. He'll know what to do with talent.

Dunno. Pelini won 9+ games like 6 years in a row? That's crazy! Only Alabama has done that over the past 6 years or so. No way this guy matches that. Debbie took another step down the ladder of mediocrity. We can use the company.
Bingo.

I just love how reading through this thread old Kilory/Herbie still up to his old tricks posting meaningless stats under one of his many, many usernames.

Funny thing who ever the Huskers next coach is we will hear the same narrative as we heard in this thread about how great he is...

If you go back peppermen has a prediction that could have made him millions.

"Get ready for perpetual 8-4 type of years. If that's going to get coaches fired, you'll have trouble hiring new ones."
