But to only a three year deal.
More evidence of a dysfunctional Athletics Dept.
I think it is an interesting choice. Especially since they don't currently have a AD, right?
Right. And an associate AD just resigned.
Makes sense. Claeys has been with Kill for 20 yrs. along with many of the other assistants. I imagine Minnesota has an idea who they're getting as a head coach. Also Claeys said if Minnesota didn't want to start loosing their recruiting class they needed to make a decision on him sooner then later. If he does well in the next couple yrs. they can always give him a extension and if he doesn't he's probably gone.
I'm with you Grosie, this is a good move for them and makes a ton of sense.Makes sense. Claeys has been with Kill for 20 yrs. along with many of the other assistants. I don't see what sense it would make for Minnesota to burn it all down and start over. The Illinois, Maryland and Rutgers jobs are probably all better than Minnesota

My hat is off to the Minnesota administrator who made this move.
- They keep the recruiting class together
- They keep a very good staff together & they deserve this. This affects families and careers
- They give Claeys a chance & 3 yrs is plenty of time to determine if he's the man
- This is a win on every level.
Good point. That would have been a better options. What's you're phone number? I'd like to have you negotiate my next contract. It's definitely their best option to make this deal. I'm just surprised they didn't make it a five year deal with a low buyout after three years. With a three year deal he can't sell recruits as well on the idea of him being their coach throughout their college careers.
How many Dilly Bars does he get if the team makes a bowl game?
Same as Mark Mangino did. Industry standard...How many Dilly Bars does he get if the team makes a bowl game?
No way is Illinois a better job. Not even close.I don't see what sense it would make for Minnesota to burn it all down and start over. The Illinois, Maryland and Rutgers jobs are probably all better than Minnesota
If he ends up incapable of continuing with Kills success, locking him up for 5 yrs is putting then in a horrible spot. Particularly with Minnesotas very dire financial situation. It's definitely their best option to make this deal. A 3 yr ties up everything currently in place and gives some time to evaluate if he us really "the guy". If at anytime in the next year or 2 they confirm he is the right direction, they lock him up with a shiny new contract.
Personally, I don't think he is "the guy" to take over. Good coordinator. Good guy. For a coordinator. Probably not an impressive enough individual to go up against other big hitters in a living room and in booster meetings.
Just my feel. He doesn't have presence. Not a feisty guy. Just doesn't have "it"
