Gov Reynolds attacks on public education working: Linn-Mar to lose 50 staff members in budget cuts. UPDATE: CR also losing staff.

Only ignorant Republicans talk this stupidity. Again, let me know your job so I can tell you how little you mean to society.
You are so bitter about your lot in life and the choices you have made. The stakeholders in my company are quite happy with their return on investment. Also, if they are not, they can leave. Unlike the students and families who cannot afford private school. They are stuck in classrooms with underperforming adults who believe they should get paid for rolling out a ball.

How about you just say thank you to those of us who do pay a shit ton of taxes each year rather than bemoaning us.

You got me, PE teacher. Let's have everyone who has made a grammatical error on a post throw in the towel.

I could ask 50 parents if they would rather have more teachers or disruptive students removed from the school. Every one of them would say have disruptive students removed from the school

But you win the argument over a grammatical error. Good for you. Take the W. I will take the L.
AreWeCross….the “law” does not allow that, however…
50 parents …..500 parents…makes no difference. It’s been tried before….. numerous times.

One more thing you’re wrong about. Make that 2. Just tripling down on ignorance. Well done. 🤣🤣🤣

I agree with you, but when I posted lack of discipline was the biggest issue facing public schools I got called out because I haven't been writing down Dodge Ball in a Lesson Plan.

Ok, with all of your experience in the highly skilled profession of PE teacher, do you really think adding more teachers is a better solution than removing disruptive students from the classroom? Put yourself on record...

Would you rather have 1) two PE teachers in the gymnasium observing dodge ball, or 2) remove the disruptive students from the gymnasium? How do you think a math or science teacher would choose?

ArWeCross what % of schools do you think have highly disruptive students that aren’t disciplined or held accountable in the classroom?

Yeah, districts aren't cutting staff because their superintendent makes too much. You don't know much about school finance, and that's okay, not many people do. But most people are rational enough to realize they don't and just sit it out.

You're still decrying districts spending money on facilities and cutting staff when that's just nonsensical and totally unrelated.

Aren’t teacher salaries about 80% of most districts budgets?

Your question is too disrespectful and asinine to answer. Your ignorance on the subject just flows. Exactly the same as if I tried to tell you how to make your shareholders more money. Stay in your lane.

What I’m waiting for is an administrator to explain to me why we have to change curriculum every 2-3 years. Find something that works and freaking stick with it. Our district teachers are livid because they like “95%” but we are being forced to spend thousands to switch…again. THAT’s where we taxpayers are getting scammed. Any super want to jump in and explain this constant waste of money?

Can’t help you with that one, I’ve not risen that high in the ranks of education. (Supt anyway). Sorry Mr Paris.

I’m guessing you’re not a fan of most PD either.

We’ve certainly disagreed about a few things in some threads but I totally back you here.

Do you understand what a prick you appear to be here? Phuque you and your “maga” reasoning/ infantile insults. Your immediate defense is to “mock and ridicule” and you just show your immaturity and insecurity in doing so. You’re probably not smart enough to write a lesson plan or organize a dodge ball game by yourself, if the truth be known. Your not the only one Are… there’s a couple of your MAGA ilk here that are your equal, too.

My favorite is the fact that a lot of the new curriculum ideas are basically old methods wrapped in a new package with a cute new name. For example when I started teaching elementary we used a basal for reading. Basically books with many short stories in them which we used to teach small groups at different reading levels. A few years later whole language was the recommended method so we got a new reading series where everyone in the class was reading the same story with break out small groups for skills work. Then after a few more years we needed to move on the better method of guided reading which is teaching using a bunch of leveled short stories in reading groups according to the student's ability. (Basically like the basal only now the stories were cute individual books)

It depends on the PD. If it's valid I'm fine with it. Dipshit Cross doesn't realize I also teach reading and math, though I believe PE is as valuable as anything. I mean, when 300 pounders are laying on their deathbed after a coronary nobody is saying, "But he sure could read good."

I think this whole switching curriculum every 3 years is just a scam. Even when the teachers beg the district not to switch, they do it anyway. Money talks.

Is it ok to laugh about someone on their deathbed,,,because I did.

(I always felt it also depended on how the PD was presented)

Enjoy the day.

My thoughts on the main point of the thread is that without knowing trending district enrollment it is difficult to know why staff members are getting cut. This can't solely be blamed on any political party, it is just the nature of the game.

School Finance can be tricky. If a district is down say 50 kids that can be a major issue for mid- and small size schools as that could mean a budget cut of around $400,000. For a school with a $10 million dollar budget that is a pretty big cut.

MOST districts in Iowa (read smaller schools) are not top heavy in Administration. The bigger schools, probably so. Just my opinion on that one.

Ours gets more top heavy all the time with many people, including the super, who don't send their kids to our district. It's infuriating. Our district isn't good enough for their kids...mostly because of ATHLETICS. Not even kidding.

Where Cross is right, but he went attack mode, is that yes there are significant behavior issues in the schools. We can't expel them. Not anymore. So to help give these kids some more attention, we need MORE ADULTS to work with them. Until the state makes a law...and I thought Kim was actually hinting about this awhile back...to help remove students who have no desire to learn, only disrupt the learning environment, and their parents do nothing but blame everyone else for their kids' behaviors, I don't see a ton of improvement.

Literally yesterday we had a student who was climbing all over the roof of his mom's van, refusing to come down, and when finally a teacher helped get him down, talking to him, she blamed the school...because HER KID wasn't listening to her and on top of her minivan. It's insanity.

Are you in a 3A / 4A district?

I think you are right about some tough kids making things more challenging than ever. That’s a trend nationwide and many things have been put in place to reduce consequences for those students.

Personally I have not seen many of those type of students where my kids attended and the few there were got expelled quickly. It’s amazing what removing 1 or 2 kids can do.

Not trying to gauge where you are located but have you been in the same district for most of your years?

Do you think the size of the district makes a large difference in the ratio of severe behavior kids?

Large district. Yes 4A. The biggest issue is having a huge percentage of kids in poverty. Parents don’t care about education and it gets passed on to the kids. Hundreds of parents have no business being parents.

I got attacked for a grammatical error. You are blind to the way conservatives are attacked on this board. I don’t see you admonishing the libs.

I gave an opinion on public schools that stated discipline is the biggest problem and I was called out as not being qualified on the subject.

Everyone gives views on matters outside of their expertise. Tommy didn’t like it.

I am happy to not post the way you describe. Why don’t you admonish others who are of your ilk for the same thing.

I vow to be respectful in every post going forward. Hopefully, you will lead others in the same way.

Respectfully, I gave an opinion on public schools and you imply I am not qualified to have an opinion that contradicts yours, because I am not an educator. Giving my opinion on public schools is not telling you how to do your job.

I am happy to have a respectful discussion about why I went attack mode on you. Would you like to have that discussion?

Do you even realize how you came at my job? Immediately. You think that makes me stupid and not worthy of respect…which is low hanging fruit and ignorant. I KNOW behavior is a problem. Nobody knows better than me. But people who aren’t in education thinking they know more than me, a 26 year teacher, is silly. It’s as silly as me sharing an ignorant opinion about what you do. No Trump voter on here can grasp that. It’s been a decades long thing of Republicans attacking teachers here. Ignorant and tiresome.

You give strong opinions on economics from time to time. In the process, you disagree with those of us who have strong backgrounds and expertise on finance, economics, drivers of government receipts, etc.

Honestly, what qualifies you to contradict our expert knowledge in these matters? I ask to understand how you separate sharing your views on topics outside of education from when those of outside of the education field share our views. Why do you think you know more than those of us who run successful businesses know about economics, finance, etc.?

Thanks for the reply.

I honestly have no idea, I would guess it is a much bigger issue in larger districts. I’ve been involved in a number of smaller districts in various capacities over the years and I really don’t see it as a big issue. An issue yes, but not a big one. A kid or two maybe. But those kids / parents have seemed to migrate numerous times over the course of their educational career.

I think like many things in the news they show many of the negatives and it seems like it’s more commonplace than it is. I think alternate schools have helped and I see those around more frequently

I agree there is an issue with behaviors at some schools, certainly not all. I think a lot depends on how staff and administration address it.

Thank you for the respectful response. I live in Des Moines metro, so based on your insights it would make sense that I frequently hear from many teaching professionals how bad student behavior has become

I don’t hear much from smaller communities.

Nope. When do I contradict something about your job? Ever? When do I belittle your job to imply you’re stupid? Ever? Let me know when you post something about what you do for a living, and reply with an ignorant opinion. Knock yourself out trying. I don’t know what you do.
