First and foremost, I despise this thread, but am curious to know why we are comparing a redshirt freshman to a senior? Not to mention comparing him to others, who people feel didn't meet their full potential? There are numerous accounts as stated above, where wrestlers come in highly touted and don't have similar results in college, but there are also numerous examples of where wrestlers who "underachieved" in high school and come in and have contrary results in college.

Categorizing Gunther this stage in the game shows your lack of appreciation for him stepping up, and your lack of trust in Brands' development of his wrestlers. Will Gunther have better results than the wrestlers listed above? Time will tell. Will Gunther have better results than some of the greats? Time will tell. However, lets not start a self fulfilling prophecy till we see what this young man is capable of. Four more years in the Iowa wrestling room is a long time to grow and achieve his goals.

So, why has he been on the shelf?
My guess (and I have NO inside information) is that they wanted to continue to have him wrestle unattached this fall, to give the coaches a chance to see who they have at 165.......and to make the decision to pull his redshirt. Give both wrestlers the chance to compete at Midlands and see what happens after that competition.

Sounds good but he hasn't been competing in the opens.

Is anyone keeping a tally of the number of posts for Gunther? I think he may be able to bypass the number of Grothus posts with in 2 years.

Mike was a Hammer! One of our most Dominating wrestlers on top! Ever!
How's he doing now? Still working Freestyle? Hope so- tough tough dude!

He certainly came into the program as having a reputation of being a hammer on top. Not sure the actual evidence proved that out. I don't have the numbers, but I'm willing to bet Brooks is a more dominant top wrestler than Evans turned out to be.

I still think Evans was hampered by a significant knee injury that prevented him from being a champ his senior year.

Not taking anything away from Gunther, but we shouldn't be in s position where a guy like Gunther should have to start as a redshirt freshman. We have way to many holes in the lineup for a supposed top program. Happens year after year. We need to recruit to the holes.
