Today’s topic.

How many people live in the same place or near where they grew up?

How many have friends for life from their youth?

Just curious. My motivation shall become clear later, when I reveal the reasons behind my questions.

Interestingly (well to me, anyway) I now live very close to where I was born (literally 10-12 blocks) but several hundred miles from where I grew up.

I stay in touch with a small handful of folks I knew way back in my elementary school days, but only one that I see in person with any regularity. Another of my closest friends is someone I knew from high school, but went to a different one than me but we hung out in the same social circles and then were roomates in college.

Most of the rest of my friends I picked up post-college through work, kids activities, etc.

I was born in Canada, lived there for first 9 years of my life, then moved to Fort Dodge Iowa. Left Iowa immediately after college and never moved back, now live in Chicago. I maintain one friend from high school (it was Fort Dodge what can you expect). I have a large group of friends from all over the world, most of whom I met through work including Ms. Traveler.

Iowa was an ok place to grow up, it is great to visit on game days, see family etc. but I strongly believe my life is richer from the experiences I had living in a truly global city, traveling the world, etc.

Not exactly the same, but similar to mine.

I may ask you more questions as I delve into my research.

Live a couple hours from where I grew up.
Most of my closer friends are from there. Don’t see em enough though as some are still there or have moved farther away.
Really made it harder when the rents passed and I didn’t have a reliable place ta stay at when I go back.

Born in Davenport, grew up in "Des Moines" lived in Brazil for a few months, moved back to go to school in Lincoln NE, lived there like 15 years, decided we wanted to be near family for raising children, moved about 30 miles from where I grew up.

I'm up to a handful of different island visits.

Islands are beautiful, Warm weather in January is nice, my travels have made me appreciate home more.

Many life long friends.

Born in Winston-Salem and, outside of my college days, never lived more than an hour from there. Easy access to the mountains. Easy access to the ocean. Top quality entertainment. Plenty of local breweries. What more could I want?

I live 3.5 hours away from where I grew up. And yes, I am still friends with many of my childhood friends.

Fifteen years in Lincoln? It's all beginning to make sense.

I now live 36 miles from where I grew up - moved here in October of 2023.

That's after spending the preceding 19 years living 1,325 miles from where I grew up. An experience I'm very glad I got to have. Mostly moved back for an opportunity with my company. But also good to be back closer to family - I'm the only one that had ever really moved far away.

This is a really big deal.

There are so many people that I grew up with that never left the immediate area. They might have gone to Mexico or Bahamas for vacation, but staying on a beach drinking at a resort doesn't really expand your worldview. They're the people that will bash NYC or Europe, but have never been there, so they're just repeating what they've been told by someone else - who also likely hasn't actually been to those places.

I'm the first person in all of my family to have ever used a passport. I think it's made a huge difference in how I see things, and how I appreciate things outside of my "comfortable bubble".

Grew up in Cedar Rapids. Went away for college and then lived in several different cities over the next 12 years. I came home to visit 4-5 times a year. It started becoming difficult for me to leave my family after each visit. My parents were starting to show their old age, which made me sad, and my siblings (all in the CR area) were having children. I moved back to CR and plan on being here the rest of my life. Family is very important to me.

I have a very large circle of lifelong friends that I have always and will always remain close with.

I live in Iowa, 130 miles from where I grew up in Iowa. I still maintain and see in person many of the friendships from my youth.

I live 2 hours from where I grew up, however my family doesn't live in that town and I haven't been there in 14 years. The farthest I've lived was 26 hours away. I'd rather be there, tbh.

I talk to maybe 2 people from my youth. And by talk, I mean we text a couple times once a year. I can't remember the last time I actually saw them. Maybe at a wedding in 2021.

Live where I grew up but with a 9 year period in another part of the country. Everyone should do this.

I have many friends from my youth/school. One of the things I'm most proud of.

Currently live on the farm I grew up on after living and teaching for 30+ years less than an hour from my hometown. My childhood friends/classmates are mostly FB friends. After being away for so long I often don't recognize them when I run into them in town. My closest friends are my former co workers.

I live 300 miles from where I was born, 25 miles from where I spent most of my youth, and 650 miles from where I graduated high school.
I keep in regular contact with one friend from high school and one roommate from college, although we live hundreds of miles apart. Most of my closest friends are co-workers or former co-workers.

I grew up in the Washington D.C. suburbs and live about 15 miles from where I grew up. This area is great except for the traffic.

I rarely connect with childhood friends anymore.
