Has there every been a loss (FB or otherwise) that hurt more? Which?

Personally, I can't think of anything that touches this... loss to UNLV in elite 8 comes to mind, but still doesn't touch this.

Seems odd, but I wasn't really mad after the game. Ending just seemed not right, surreal. The loss last year to Nebby, now that really, really pissed me off. I kept saying to myself "I know, I think I'll have a stroke today". I think I did.

In 1960 then #1 Iowa under coach Evashevski lost at then #2 Minnesota (coach Warmath) by 10-27. Minnesota went to the Rose Bowl and Iowa stayed home. Iowa finished the year #2 in the coaches poll and #3 in the AP with an 8-1 record. Yeah, I'd say that hurt..

The 1970 Jacksonville basketball loss is still #1 for me. We had the best team in the country and we got beat at the buzzer by a 35 foot shot that missed badly and was tipped in at the buzzer. For whatever reason, the loss to MSU hurts but it isn't going to hurt 45 years from now.

Edit: I won't be around 45 years from now, but I'm sure you get my point.

Pretty much this....Was pretty bummed leaving the Northwestern game in 09. Was just maddening how Iowa lost that Nebbie game last year, especially when we had em dead to rights.

I really wasn't too mad/angry/upset after the game against sparty. It would have "hurt" more had Iowa got run off the field as that would've validated all the things that the "experts" have been saying as the season went on. It really is weird how I was not bummed about the result of the game considering how close they were to a playoff spot and not knowing when they will get that close again.

I've been more pissed after other loses than this one. It's like I saw it coming with how long the defense played the 3rd Q and how MSU kept converting 3rd downs on that drive, I knew they were going to score.

2014 Nebraska, 2009 Northwestern, 2002 Iowa State - all "pissed" me off more

Can't remember the year (90's) but we were ahead of OSU till the final seconds when B. Olive caught a TD pass to win the game.

1970, Jacksonville regional final or final 4 vs Louisville in 80

The Jacksonville loss was a real downer. That was without a doubt one of the 2 or 3 greatest teams ever assembled at Iowa. Averaged 100 points a game with no 3 point shot. Glen Vidnovik, Chad Calabria, Downtown Freddie Brown, John Johnson, Ben McGilmer, Jim Jensen. Jville had 7'4 Artis Gilmore and 7'0 Pembrooke Burrows. Huge team that eventually got taken down by UCLA.

This loss really didn't hurt as much as quite a few others.
Last year vs Nebraska blowing a big lead with terrible fans in front of us.
09 when Stanzi gets brought down by facemask causing fumble and injury.

These guys played their hearts out and it was disappointing but they left it all on the field. Yes there were a few calls that could of helped Iowa and the playoffs would have been fantastic, but really after getting a Rosebowl bid, it hurts a whole lot less.

1) tOSU FG in OT '09 (goodbye Rose)
2) Bobby Fn Olive
3) Rose Bowl 1991
4) Central Michigan just because of how.
5) 1993 Alamo Bowl. Only because I was in school, had just moved to a new, and everyone knew I was from Iowa.

All worse, because I knew we probably played into Rose. Losing the Rose would also be worse.

1968. Playing Michigan at home in last game of BB season. Win and we are outright Big Ten champs (we had already clinched a tie). Sam Williams is honored before the game as the Big Ten's most valuable player. Johnny Orr is Michigan's coach! We start out the game down 18-0, coming back to tie, and lose by one point. Talk about heartbreaking! Why do the losses hurt more than the wins feel good?

The UNLV loss will be tough to top. That team was about to win it all.

Especially since Iowa played so incredibly well in the first half of that game. I don't recall ever seeing a better half of college basketball in my life. Considering only football, for me, I would rate the MSU loss behind the Rose Bowl loss to UCLA, but it still stings, and is a close second on the all time "pain" list.

I worked with a Gopher fan at the time who was a big college basketball fan. He happened to be at that game, and stated the same thing. He said that was the best half of college ball he'd ever seen.

I was disappointed but really not pissed or hurt. I felt like this team had overachieved all year and then gave it everything they had against a very good team and fell just short. Never in my wildest dreams did I think this was a 12-1 team that would be 27 seconds from playing in the 4 team playoff. Winning the B1G championship would have been great but also would have just been the icing on the cake of an incredible season.

Not even close.

1. 1986 Rose Bowl (I will never forgive Ronnie Harmon)
2. 1970 basketball v. Jacksonville
3. 1987 Basketball UNLV
4 1980 Basketball Louisville

I'm sure there are more, but I'm going to go cry myself to sleep now.

Even the Bobby Olive game, we still went to the Rose Bowl that season.
For me, it's:
1. 1987 UNLV basketball (Should've been National Champs that year)
2. 1985 loss at Ohio State. (If we were undefeated going into the Rose Bowl, that momentum would've overcome Ronnie Harmon and his $50K.)
3. Looking back, 2002 loss to Iowa State. Probably would've been ranked one notch above Ohio State, that season.
4. 2009 loss at Ohio State. (Rose Bowl on the line)
5. B1G championship game loss.

UNLV game. Indy won it all that year and we split with them. Up a bunch and the second half was a very slow death. Great team and THAT was a National Championship team waiting to happen. Never felt closer to it than that.

For football, it has to be the 1985 Rose Bowl. What many people still don't realize about that game is Iowa had a SHOT at being ranked #1 if they won. Think about that for a few minutes. Iowa had a spot in a 4 team playoff if they won this past weekend. They had a shot at the title if they won that Rose Bowl. And then to have Harmon sell out and blow it like that...

Next up for me in football, 2002 Orange Bowl. Because no matter what anybody tells me, that's the best Hawkeye team I think we've ever had. I personally believe they were the best team in the nation (think about how people view Alabama this year for example) and they played SO POORLY in that game.

I'm only talking football here on this board. Those saying 2014 Nebraska ought to be taken out of our fan base. WTF?

It is in my lifetime. I was born in '89. Disagree with people saying '09 vs OSU. We were lucky to get back in that game (DJK/kick return team bailed us out) and we'd already lost once. We almost took control of this one and it was for 13-0.

Oh man, I think I blocked out Northwestern in '09. I think without that one play where Stanzi was injured and fumbled, I truly believe win a national title. The 6 Seconds of Hell Defense was best in the nation by season's end.

yeah..sad thing is that they seemed to have the throttle down early in that game and an ass kicking was brewing before that fateful play

This game was very, very, tough to swallow. The play where was Stanzi got hurt is obviously the one we all remember, and a killer blow. The play that often gets forgotten is the long TD run by BW after that, which was called back on a VERY questionable holding call. If that run stands the Hawks probably win that game...... and thus would have been celebrating our 2nd 12 win season after Nebbie this year.

My top 5 are:

1.) NW state (1st rd NCAA Tourney) Had plans to watch hawks in sweet 16 that year.
2.) @ OSU 2009 (tough game, but thought we had it). Team was playing well.
3.) 2004 Outback Bowl (that game was horribly officiated) Just seemed unfair
4.) 2002 vs ISU (horrible game, actually got black out drunk)
5.) 1997 @ MICH (Iowa had a lead at halftime) and then MICH got every call and won.

While this game was heartbreaking and crazy to watch. It was still fun, knowing that no one gave this team any credit or chance to be in it. Hell they were about 16in from stopping them and taking over. It was just a tough break and I think every Iowa Fan knew once they got into 4 down territory, it would be hard to stop them. The Time of Possession stat kept flashing on the screen at Lucas Oil and it kept getting worse and worse.

Amazingly, this game doesn't hurt as much as I thought it would. Probably because of the way the team played and left it all out there. So proud to be a Hawkeye! BUt to answer the original question, the '86 Rose Bowl still to this day hurts. We had the best team in the country that year and to watch us play so poorly against UCLA sill hurts.

Ronnie Lester's injury hurt as much. Cost us a national championship.

This game hurt because my family and I attended in person and had to go through tough loss. Then we had to sit there while MSU fans behind us cheered. We had to wait for stadium to clear for my mom who doesn't walk very fast anymore. The stadium went into postgame MSU celebration. Then we had to walk through long line of MSU fans on way to hotel. Go Green, Go White BS. My Bro booked room at Westin, which happened to be MSU team hotel. So hotel was full of of MSU db's feeling full of themselves. Then I had to leave Westin later in night and lobby was full of MSU db's waiting for team to make appearance so I had trouble getting through lobby and no staff was around to get the car.

I don't think MSU fan's are db's in general, but the reality is they kick our ass in basketball with Izzo and now football they are on a roll. My bro and I talked about that B1G b-ball tourney a couple years back..Iowa out hustled MSU, but Izzo had Teddy Valentine in his hip pocket and they stole that game. I Hate wisconsin except Alvarez, msu, and OSU.

Lot of tough losses for Hawk fans. UNLV, Rose Bowls of past, Ronnie lester getting hurt after matching Louisvilled point for point. That NW game in 2009 hurt because it broke the dream. That was a top notch defense we had.. too bad no offense.

This year and in Indy, I think Iowa football played over their ability. Not a lot of 4 or 5 star athleticism, but a lot of 5 star heart. They played their hearts out vs MSU. Can't be disappointed, but it does still hurt. Wish odds weren't so stacked against us on recruiting trail.
