When asked after which quarterback he models his game, without a second of hesitation, Lainez said, “The great Brad Banks.”
“When Coach O’Keefe told me about him, I went home and watched Brad Banks’ film,” he said. “I was like, ‘This guy’s freaking electric, he makes plays. And so, that’s a good thing to model myself after.”
Banks, the 2002 Heisman runner-up and Big Ten Silver Football winner, led the Hawkeyes to an unbeaten Big Ten campaign and tossed a league-leading 26 touchdowns to 5 interceptions. He passed for 2,573 yards and his pass efficiency rating of 157.1 was the best in the FBS. In Iowa’s final four regular-season games, Banks threw 10 touchdown passes and no interceptions.
