A Christmas present for @WildTurk

From the below article:

"In addition to the University of Iowa, other teams committed to sending wrestlers include Arizona State, Purdue, Northern Illinois, South Dakota State, and Minnesota-Mankato State in the Men's division. The Women's division already has commitment from the likes of Indiana Tech, Iowa Wesleyan, and William Penn."

Needs more teams
Yes, when I read that my thoughts were eh. Need to reach out to American, Clarion, etc.
My point is, if they weren't originally scheduled for Midlands or the Scuffle then they should have already reached out.

Cool! Just saw Northwestern has added two dual meets for the dates of the Midlands! Lee fighting!

I doubt the organizers have unrealistic expectations here. Most teams that aren’t already scheduled to be at the Scuffle or in Chicago have full schedules. It’s incredibly tough to plan a big tournament in less than 10 day’s time, over the holidays.

Consider this year a dry run. We will see what the future holds.

getting east coast teams to throw together last ditch travel plans when they weren’t expecting to compete was never realistic. i’m expecting this to look like a low level open with mostly back ups at this point. good attempt, but the cards were stacked against them and maybe this grow into something more in the future.

This was a good idea that progressed to far in my opinion. Once the Illinois matmen tourney took off and picked up the majority of midlands teams they should have scraped this idea until next year.

You didn’t ask me but I think this is the end of the Midlands. Unless NW transfers it to Illinois Matmen.
wouldn’t be surprised if the nw administration would be glad to be rid of it. shame because of the history, but it’s been trending down the last 5 years. same with the scuffle. i think the standard christmas break tournament schedule is falling out of favor, probably for good reason.

Agree!

Establish the date, venue, location, now. Risk getting yanked around in IL again? No thanks.

I suspect they are thinking long term. This year is just a start. It will be a little weak and much like Midlands there won’t be much for Hawkeye starters wrestling. I expect some post grads though.

There are a lot of teams that aren’t going to want to come to the Hawkeye Open just because it’s the Hawkeye Open. Establish all they want right now I’m just not sure it will matter with the prejudice that exist out there against Iowa. I would love to see the Hawkeye Open turn into a new and improved Midlands, but I’ll believe that when it happens.

We were not planning on sending starters to Midlands anyway from the sounds of it so not bothering to travel there with an alternative available not surprising.

Seems like a lot of work for a iv event.

Seems like a lot of work for a iv event.
And those doing the work will receive the benefits, know matter the size of the reward.

The event gives HS wrestlers a great opportunity to come and see some good college wrestling, as their schedules can limit the opportunities they have.

I am just grateful to see more wrestling in a great venue close to home.

I know most are looking at this event in regards to the implications for the men's team(not judging or soapboxing, I promise), but this could be huge going forward for the women's side of the sport. U of I already made waves by becoming the 1st power 5 to add women's wrestling. It would be fitting that they make a play to begin hosting a premire Holiday event to showcase that talent.

I think you mean "jv event". You have to start somewhere and then build up next year. Midlands needs to disappear. Chicago is a crime ridden dump.
While what you say is pretty accurate right now, Hoffman Estates is not all that close to the city. Closer to open farmland, actually.

this is true. About 10 min from the wife grew up, actually really nice areas out there. Texas twister- a lot better than getting strong armed by the law:) I kid I kid. Lots of areas I love down there

Yep i believe you are on to something that could become really big. If you have the venue to set up an event that had both mens and ladies wrestling. It could become the big mid-season event. Sure this is just a start and it will need some time to gain steam, but with the girls wrestling growing. It seems to make a lot of sense.

It does not need to be big to be successful.

I would like to see more events in warm places like Florida again (prefer Orlando or Tampa) or Phoenix during the break. Midlands is not what it used to be.

Meh, I already hate that wrestling spans two semesters. The last thing you need to do is make kids travel away from family over the holiday break.

Though I appreciate the sentiment, I can’t say I’ve ever heard basketball players complain about holiday tournaments or football players complain about bowl games in warm climates.

I don't think this event is being positioned as something to replace Midlands. In the future that is. Pretty sure Shammy stated he wanted to start an early-season tournament and that this was going to be the testing grounds for such a tournament.

Hopefully, it can fill the hole of the old Ohama or Northern Open tournaments that used to be very good tournaments.

If you can get a handful of full lineups and a bunch of the top redshirts and backups that ends up being a very good tournament.

Midlands died when they moved it from Welsh Ryan, IMHO. We went 12 years in a row starting with the year Bill and Mike Zadick shared the championship and Ironside beat Schwab. Old school wrestling tournament with all the nostalgia. Really miss attending there.

I miss National Duals in Cedar Falls. Ten degrees and snow falling outside, 10,000 people yelling inside. After three days, I used to get marks on my butt from the seats. ;)
Do you remember seeing Mark Perry throw his shoes in a garbage can? Or Charlie Falk coming back from hella behind and winning a match?

It looks you and I started and stopped about the same time.
