Hawkeye Open thread redux

They posted on Iowa wrestling fan club via Track wrestling that this thing is gaining a lot of steam already. Showed a lot of teams signed up and sending a good amount of wrestlers.

I just texted him. Waiting to hear back. In the meantime I’ll bet $20 to WFL?
Got ahold of a teammate and good friend. Freshman year when he placed 3rd at Kauffman Brand. Can’t remember if he did it at National duals, but said he may have.

Hawkeye Open on Track lists lots of teams with 20 wrestlers. My guess is those teams are actually 0. Looks like a copy and paste list from original midlands and all the team that were going there show 20. Iowa shows 35 guys SD st 23 those are only D1 teams so far. The Matmen Open ( old midlands) has over 250 wrestlers registered

Yup. That’s an easy one. I’ve never been to the Kauffman Brand. It was definitely at the Dome. I think he even got majored.
Read my post above. We’re both right. Regardless I’ll send GG a Jackson. And you’re right. I believe it was like 8-0 or 9-1.

I for sure watched him do it in the UNI dome and I'm pretty sure it was the national duals. I didn't go to the UNI open very often and I've never gone to the UNO open. Could it have been when they lost to Nebraska? I remember watching it and he did jack sh!t to win the match and stormed off with far more energy than when he wrestled.

The loss at Kauffman was to Hendricks the first time they met in college. Perry flew off the handle and quit the team several times, I’m just mixing up my memories. He 100% did it at Kauffman in ‘04 as well. I was not the dome the year you guys are referring to so my only memory of him doing it was in Omaha.

Btw, nice to hear from you Cal! Been awhile! Hope all is well.

I don't think I am going to pay the extra $10 to watch matman. The field there is not especially interesting minus Iowa.

I was in Omaha those years too. I enjoyed that event.

That was at the UNO open, not National duals. And Charlies comeback with the late ventriloquist fall was at NCAAs in STL.
After he lost to Hendrix at National duals he threw them in the trash I was there. Also remember hanging with the wrestlers in the lounge for a bit the following year. Watching Star and Beatty grow up from when they were kids over the years was a major plus those years for me.

Gonna be 50 ranked wrestlers. 184 will be loaded. 165 interesting as well as many other weights

We’ve come a long way. When I was a kid, they carved the brackets into cave walls, AFTER the event.
The last time I was at National Duals in Cedar Falls, I think that a saber-toothed tiger crapped on my program, but it might have been just a Mizzou fan.

I wonder if they are making this a single day event now. It is only listed for Sunday on the Xtream Arena calendar and you cannot purchase day 1 tickets anymore. Also, earlier in the day trackwrestling showed 36 wrestlers in the Men's division with the following DI teams: Iowa (15), UNI (10), SDSU (2), Nothern Illinois (2), Virginia (2). Now trackwrestling again lists a bunch of new schools with 20 wrestlers each.

Confirmed…

Getting more hyped about the Hawkeye Open....this event seems to be gaining steam. May take a couple of years to mature but I like the direction so far.

IOWA AT OPEN TOURNAMENTS

Iowa wrestlers have won 14 open tournament titles in 2021-22. Four Iowa wrestlers won championships in their respective divisions Nov. 29 at the Harold Nichols Open, including Drake Ayala (125), Wyatt Henson (141), Patrick Kennedy (165) and Aaron Costello (285).

Ayala pinned his first two opponents and won the title match by major decision to win the Freshman/Sophomore Division in his college debut. Kennedy started the day with a pin and then won by technical fall in his next two matches in the 165-pound Open Division, capturing his first tournament title of the season. Costello rallied off three straight wins by decision to top the 285 Open Division. Henson was 3-0 on the day, including a 32-16 technical fall in the opening round.

Redshirt freshman Cullan Schriever and Henson won titles Nov. 20 at the 2021 Lindenwood Open. Schriever went 3-0 with a technical fall and a pin to win the 133-pound Gold Division. Henson won twice by fall and added a major decision to win the 141-pound Black Division.

Iowa opened the 2021-22 season winning eight titles Nov. 13 at the Luther Open. Seven Iowa wrestlers won championships in the Elite Division, including Jesse Ybarra (125), Austin DeSanto (133), Jaydin Eierman (141), Cobe Siebrecht (149), Kaleb Young (157), Alex Marinelli (165) and Zach Glazier (197). Henson won the 141-pound Silver/Freshman division, rolling up three technical falls and a major in the finals.

BIG TEN OPENER

The Hawkeyes open the Big Ten dual season hosting Minnesota on Friday, Jan. 7 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The dual is televised live on BTN at 8 p.m.

i was at that Kauffman - Brand Open (which was loaded btw)

and Perry definitely threw something.

Reading this thread, one could fairly draw the conclusion that Perry threw something in the trash every time he did not win a tournament. Reminds me of the old saying, "Show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser."

Meh, I already hate that wrestling spans two semesters. The last thing you need to do is make kids travel away from family over the holiday break.
We agree but 2 semesters is another issue. I prefer single semester and ESPN approached the wrestling community circa 2015 and offered to cover more duals if they season was switched but the legacy programs declined. I was not there but I got this from a D1 coach who was. Please don't kill the messenger

Teams ride buses for hours...why not fly someplace warm? 1/3 of D1 athletes are Vit D deficient due to lack of sunlight. Half of football players. I assume wrestlers who are unaware are even higher.
