Hawkeyes offer 2019 PG D.J. Carton

Well, that ends the wondering of if and when. Now time to show him who we have and what years they will be entering when he arrives as compared to Wisconsin.

The timing should be good as I really think WI is going to be down next year while IA will finish in the Top 3-7 and be dancing; not to mention Joe & Patrick coming aboard over the next two years.

I like our chances.

I would love to hear more about his game from someone who knows....Have been told he is super athletic...I sure like that in a guard.

Any insight on why we are just now pulling the trigger? Just curious....

Will the fact that Wisconsin offered before Iowa have any impact?

He's just becoming a Junior, the offer is actually early if you check out many top 150 kids in his class. But Wisconsin did indeed offer before us. Does it matter? We'll see but Carton is intent on looking around, allowing the recruiting process to play out. Bob knows more than I by far...I'm hopeful he'll contribute a little of his opinion.

He's in Patrick McCaffery's class of 2019, right?

How many scholarships are available for 2019?

Technically, I believe three. We still need to get one for Connor, and after that we've three for 2019. Ellingson, Baer, Williams, and Wagner will be departing after 2018. But with transfers....who knows?

Thanks. Yeah, I should have said how many scholarships do we "currently" have available. Also, Xavier Foster is a 2020 recruit, correct?

Pretty remarkable how much talent the state of Iowa is putting out right now. Kind of reminds me of the stretch in the 1990s when Iowa produced LaFrentz, Dean Oliver, Ricky Davis, Nick Collison, and Hinrich within a five-year span.

With Weiskamp and we can probably safely assume P. McCaffery already on board, if Iowa landed Carton and Foster that would be a pretty good crop of Iowa kids to build a team around.

thanks; good points. I hope we give DJ plenty of reasons to accept.

and isn't it nice to keep the instate talent instate?

Yes, exactly my point. Of that list, we were 2/5 in the 1990s.

In fairness, I some times speculate, though, had Chris Street never been killed, and if Iowa would have made a deep run in the NCAA tourney in 1993, how everything would have turned out. That 92/93 Iowa team with Earl, Street, Barnes, Winters, and freshman McD's AA Kenyon Murray was a hell of a team.

Of course, Iowa had a crappy season the following year in 93-94 and LaFrentz ended up choosing Kansas. Mere speculation, but you never know. Of course, more importantly, Chris Street was a really great human being, and that's the greatest tragedy of it all. So often it seems God takes our best early in life.

happy for DJ and his high school head coach...been a little anxiety until today. I have seen him play multiple times...IMO..his game fits the Iowa program perfectly...while he is a PG he could also play as a combo.

If he would chose Iowa...we are getting a terrific young man, great student, great teammate...gym rat much in the mold of most of Fran kids.

Needs to continue to work on his outside shot but make no mistake he has a great work ethic...ability to drive.

I think Iowa needed a little push regarding DJ and they listened.
Very good day for Bettendorf BB.

I agree with you. To this day I wonder "what if" Street had played all 4 years at Iowa. His death was such a blow to the Iowa program and to the whole state of Iowa.

I am guessing that we wanted to watch him through this latest evaluation period Before pulling the trigger. Nothing wrong with that, still plenty early. Although kids do seem to always remember their first offer.

Foster is indeed 2020.

While I haven't even seen the 2017 Badgers yet, my left handed hunch is that with 6 talented guards and 5 seniors on the front court next year, Bucky will contend in 2018.

Hope he the fact we were 5th or 6th in offering won't play a factor. Long way to go until 2019 signing day I suppose.

Looks good.

I really hope we get him and the pg from dm north.

I know Fran loves length but if you really want to play a transition game you need guards who can push the ball.

I don't believe most recruits are all that concerned about the order of offers. However, if offering early gives a school the ability to establish a relationship with that player before the field gets crowded, that’s certainly an advantage.

It appears that the Hawks have now extended offers to four 2019 point guards: Jeremiah Francis (Ohio State lean?), Rocket Watts, Tyrell Terry and DJ. Is it likely that Fran would take more than two point guards that year?

I would hope so. We need more ballhandlers.

You should never let yourself get as thin on ballhandlers as we are right now.

Really, we've been to thin in that department through out Frans tenure.

Very impressive mixtape for an incoming junior. I bet his recruitment blows up at some point

why are we giving frans kids a scholly?
Just give him a little bonus each year

To answer your question, the answer is "because he is worthy of one." Patrick is in the 20-30 range for his class, which would be the highest ranked Iowa player since I guess Ricky Davis. Now, if Fran had the opportunity to get 4 other really good players in that class he could always go the route of having Patrick McC walk on, but that would be a great problem to have.

Definitely good timing for having element of stability in the Iowa program at the same time that there is a good run of in-state talent in consecutive classes. Wieskamp, then Patrick McC/Carton, then Xavier Foster in 3 straight classes is a nice run of years with high-end talent in the state.

as well Iowa was the first to make contact & I'm pretty sure the first to scout an actual high school game during Bettendorfs' & Iowa's seasons' last year...

I dont think that matters either.

as i just posted Iowa was the first to make contact well over a year ago...but I dont think that matters either. Especially with this kid...he has a well grounded support group.

Wisconsin IMO has a shot because Gard is a good coach & respected as a person. Wisconsin is a good school with a terrific 20 year history *although in this case I dont think that carries a great deal of weight*....the 20 years.

While Wisky may say DJ is their only PG target...I would suggest IMO that would be a mistake..especially considering a decision might not come for another year.

More than 2 point guards? Yes in a heartbeat..many so-called points can play both...Carton is one of them. To get right to it..if one of the 3 you mention commit to Iowa before DJ ..will that favor Wisconsin? Maybe but not necessarily. I think we might see DJ playing a little off guard this coming season. He can play both.
