Hawkeyes offer 2019 PG D.J. Carton

While I haven't even seen the 2017 Badgers yet, my left handed hunch is that with 6 talented guards and 5 seniors on the front court next year, Bucky will contend in 2018.

I've seen people predicting the demise of Wisconsin basketball for a number of years now. Methinks until proven otherwise Bucky will be just fine.

Yeah they kind of get the benefit of the doubt at this point. Last year was supposed to be "the year" with Ryan retiring and what not. And they end up losing by 1 to get to the Elite 8. I'm sure there will come a day when they don't make the tournament, but they do as good a job as any program of having an identity and sticking to it.

Nice to see Fran in on a bunch of PG prospects in both 2019 and 2020. I believe it is always a good idea to have three guys on your roster who can play the point, although you want at least 1 or 2 of those guys to be guards, who can swing between PG and SG, as needed. Obviously, shooting is important, but moving the ball and creating shots for teammates is critical, because there aren't that many players who can create their own shot effectively.

Couple comments from coaches...from an article in June.

"He’s one of the only players I’ve ever had a conversation with to pull him back," Bettendorf head coach Curtis Clark laughed, "where I thought he was doing too much."

Logan Wynn, Carton's AAU coach with Quad City Elite, sees the same kind of work ethic. He said Carton's not happy unless he's in the gym. Mornings, weekends, nights — he's always there.

Carton will be asked to do a lot next season for Bettendorf, which lost 10 seniors from its state quarterfinal team. He’s the only guy who averaged more than 1.1 points to return. So, college coaches who come to Bettendorf games will watch Carton battle defenses scheming to stop him every night.

I wouldnt bet on it.

When do you ever get a coaching change without a difference in results either good or bad?

In cases like Wisconsin and Isu the effects aren't felt until the previous coaches players are gone.

I would shocked if Wisconsin is able to just maintain as if Bo were still there.

well Ryan established a pretty high standard when it comes to results...but I agree still a little early to determine if Gard can duplicate. But keep in mind Gard was Ryan's right hand guy so he did have a part in the Ryan era.

I like Gard as a person...in saying that I hope we beat him for recruits and certainly when we play him. The JBo signature shot is a nice start.

Excellent point. Gard and Prohm benefited greatly due to both inheriting strong junior classes for their first 2 seasons along with good seniors for the first season as well. Both teams last year relied heavily on their seniors with each starting 4 of them and seniors having most of the minutes. Be interesting to see how both do next season. As much as Gard was Bo's right hand man he still isn't Bo Ryan.

This and next year will be years when you will be able to better evaluate whether Gard can maintain Bo's standard of play. So far, he seems to be doing a fine job, but he inherited a great core group of players. I like that he is a stand up guy, and from what I have seen, he seems to be a good game coach. Whether he can maintain Bo's ability to recruit and develop players remains to be seen.

No, I get what you're saying and to an extent agree with you. It would be unfair and unrealistic to expect someone to maintain what Bo Ryan accomplished there. Of course, many of us were saying the same thing about Ferentz after he took over for Hayden, and needless to say Ferentz has established a pretty good legacy himself. In truth, you could make the same case about Wisconsin football--oh, Barry Alvarez is gone they won't be good anymore. Well, Wisconsin is now on their third head coach post-Alvarez and still seem to be doing pretty okay.

So, what you're saying makes sense, but at the same time--which is the only point I was making--until proven otherwise, Wisconsin is still a top program in the B1G.

Bo's distain for the realities of current recruiting were well know, at least in Wisconsin. Greg, Gary Close and other assistants recruited last years juniors and seniors. Folks closer to Madison that I am claim Greg urged Bo to offer Sam Hauser. The current recruiting staff looks very good especially with the addition of Krabbenhoff and Oliver.
The question in my mind is will Greg turn out to be as good of a bench coach as Bo was. I am optimistic but it is to early to tell.

Yes, exactly my point. Of that list, we were 2/5 in the 1990s.

In fairness, I some times speculate, though, had Chris Street never been killed, and if Iowa would have made a deep run in the NCAA tourney in 1993, how everything would have turned out. That 92/93 Iowa team with Earl, Street, Barnes, Winters, and freshman McD's AA Kenyon Murray was a hell of a team.

Of course, Iowa had a crappy season the following year in 93-94 and LaFrentz ended up choosing Kansas. Mere speculation, but you never know. Of course, more importantly, Chris Street was a really great human being, and that's the greatest tragedy of it all. So often it seems God takes our best early in life.
Raef wasn't coming to Iowa, especially after that KU offer. My sister in law worked with his dad. They taught at his high school. Things really went south when coach Fry made a back handed crack at their family in the media. Fry had just been through the same type of battle to land Dwight. He said he couldn't believe that a kid whose parents were teachers in an Iowa school would choose to leave the state when Iowa most certainly wanted him there. Of course after he spurned Iowa's offer Lafrentz really got grilled by the Iowa faithful, and has fueled his hatred to this day.

Reminds me of a left-handed Steve Carfino. Already has some meat on his bones. Outside shot release point is a little low, but quick release. Nice driving ability and shows some mid-range game. Good court awareness, and seems to play both ends of the court.

Comments or not, he was going to Kansas because he wanted to go to Kansas. That was his dream school. Too much is put into this and that, but it simply was the place he wanted to go, and they offered. Nothing more, nothing less.

Didn't help that Dr Tom didn't drive 90 minutes north to see him in person but Roy made 2 connecting flights to see him in person.

Don't know if it would have changed the outcome but it certainly didn't help

Maybe so but he's made public comment even in the last year how much he hates the U of I, and he'd go to any lengths to talk recruits into not going there. Pretty odd that he's still carrying that around after all these years and a successful NBA career, don't you think?

As I recall Iowa was asked, or told, not to pressure or pursue him like that and in exchange for respecting his wishes then Iowa would get a visit.

Iowa pulled out the stops on the visit but as indicated he was going to Kansas.....no blame on the good Doctor.

Public comment? I've had personal conversations with Raef and don't find that to be the case. He does hate on some Iowa fans that act like he betrayed the state of iowa because he followed his dream.

Trust that Raef continues to live his dream and is comfortable as a multi-millionaire.

Too bad that no National Championships came his way in college, let alone an NBA ring.

Rumors and heard that he has moved back to Iowa... is this true and why?

He's also friends with former players. Good friend of mine from HS his brother was same class and friends with Kent McCausland in college and they both use to live in Kansas City for few years after graduating. Said fair share of guys Kent played with at his bachelor party but mainly Raef and Bowen buying drinks for the group all weekend.

If you say so. I've seen articles in print that said he would till this day do anything possible to sway a recruit from going to Iowa.

Complaining about Raef makes Iowa fans look like a bunch of whiny children. Was a big loss for Dr. Tom, but means little or nothing today.

He went to Kansas because that's where the job was that they found for his Daddy. Very seedy recruiting saga with LaFrentz in regards to the JayHawks.

In closing the book on Raef LaFrentz....

He is the kind of recruit that changes the landscape of a program like Iowa. A true, top-tier recruit that put the program into a different light.

He was an Iowa native? I believe, anyway. At my age, then, that was a guarantee that he was in the bag. How naive, I was. Just because I wanted him to go to Iowa City so badly. Homegrown talent wasn't as plentiful back then, so when you heard a name that tickled the national fancy, I simply assumed he would come play in my fishbowl. I was that deluded.

While camping in the Mar-Mac area one weekend, a bunch of his schoolmates showed up at our site and proceeded to tell us that he was going to Kansas. We were furious. And young. And short sighted. How could he choose anyone else?

There is life outside of Iowa. He and his parents knew that. It truly was a better opportunity for him. And a compliment from a storied and accomplished institution. He and his family had a bigger field of vision than this lifetime Iowa native. The narrow minded view of many Iowans is that there are no other options than the State U when you hail from there, and damned if you do make that unfathomable choice.

If he had to endure a lot of hatred and backlash, I don't blame him or his family for harboring a grudge. Maybe not for 25 years, but it's their call. Iowa fans can be as dickish as the next rival fans. And butthurt.

We need to get over this type of behavior. The kids who show up here want to be Hawkeyes, be it from Iowa or elsewhere. Aaron White and Dev Marble are two prime examples of transplant Iowans who I'm glad chose to play for us and I'm sure they're equally happy. Do we want to send back Nunge and Garza to their home states?

I've said it before. I love Iowa, the Hawkeyes and glad I'm from here. I can't take the fans, sometimes. I've evolved a bit more than some, I guess.

While we're talking about why and where kids go. The fact is about half the top 50 kids go to elite programs. Most of the other half stay close to home. A FEW fall out of those two catagories.

And the only reason kids from 50-150 don't follow the same pattern is that the elites run out of scholarships!

Then the semi elites (and the Big Ten HAS no more elites, so I'm talking Michigan State, Indiana, Ohio State) start picking off players.

Iowa has slowly built itself back up to where we can hope to get a top 50-150 type from outside the state.

Fortunately, we are enjoying an instate boon of talent.

Which I'd like to remind folks of the debate a while back about why is it so important to own the state of Iowa when it comes to recruiting? NOW is the reason why. The relationships McCaffery and Staff have built up are one heck of an asset.

I would agree Dan. Is the state going to have a top 25 player every year? Likely no. But it does help when Fran and Co. have done the leg work in the state so that when a Wieskamp or a Foster comes along, they are in a position to have a legitimate shot. And of course some fortune when Fran's own son turns out to be such a good player.

Exactly. I've long since gotten over his decision to go to KU. My issue with the guy is that even after ALL these years, an all american and NBA career, he still carrying it around with him! I mean cmon dude, get over it! You got everything you wanted, and had a great carreer. Move on with your life.

Okay. I'll come take a dump on your front porch. Maybe twice a day for awhile. For a decision you made that I didn't agree with but was really none of my business.

Don't hold a grudge, okay?

Fandom, just not Iowa fandom, can get really ugly and petty and intrusive. Ask Lute Olson why he left our state.

And, as I stated earlier, I was just as upset that he left. I did NOT do anything dickish to their family or property or call their house phone to express my displeasure, etc. People think they have that right...to intrude on someone's space and livelihood because they disagreed with a choice that was not their business.

I am confounded at how to reply to this as at once it seems you realize that dumba$$ fans exist everywhere, but find it alright to hate an entire fanbase for having dumba$$es.
